My sibling is a celebrity AMA

I won’t be saying who they are.

I recently spoke to a friend about it who
had lots of questions which lead to an interesting conversation, things I’d never said or thought about before.

When I was younger I used to feel incredibly jealous of them and had a very short and unsuccessful attempt at creating my own fame.

Now I’m older with my own dc and have seen the effects up close I definitely think the negatives out way the positives and it’s not something I would ever want for my children.

I find it interesting that there are two tiers of celebrity, those who have to embrace social media for their career, and those who keep completely off it. Does your sibling use social media and have they found it more a blessing or a curse?

Do you both still live in the town you grew up? Does your sibling have friends from before they became famous?

No and maybe one or two.

Have they been in a movie?
Have they been on reality TV?
Have they been in an advert?
Are they male or female?
Are they English?
Have they had a famous partner?
Are they good looking?
Have they tried to break America?
Are they rich enough to own a yacht?

As someone also close to several celebs, it absolutely definitely makes me not want to be famous! They get bothered walking down the street, people stare at them, people shout abuse at them sometimes. They go for a quiet drink on their own in the pub and get cornered. People asking for selfies. I imagine some people might say 'well boo hoo they chose to be famous'. But I don't think people really know what being famous actually entails. One of the celebs is in therapy because of trust issues about being betrayed. I think people only think of the good bits and don't realise the bad bits.

Although some of them manage to lead normal lives and keep a good level of privacy. I think you probably have to be quite intelligent and not seek out the fame aspect.

Is that you Soph? If so, I love the podcast & especially your facial expressions 🤭

Are you close to your sibling's kids? Do you feel angry/resentful that they've been so heavily affected by your sibling's fame? Do you feel that sibling could/should have done more to protect them from that and have you done anything to support them?

Mexicofund · Yesterday 22:20

Have you ever been interviewed or on tv due to being their sibling, like taken part in a documentary on their life, or joined them on a family game show for example.

Yes and yes. They could have but their intentions have never been bad and I don’t think they realised or understood the downside until it happened which tbh I didn’t either. I support them how someone would normally support their nieces /nephews.

Joe Swash is a sort of celebrity, though.

YourKeenMauveJoker · Yesterday 22:32

When you briefly tried to become famous yourself, were you trying to do something similar to your sibling or something completely different?

chergar · Yesterday 22:33

Sorry I am back with another few questions.

Do you ever see/read stories about them in the media/social media and know it is untrue, do you ever put the record straight or do you stay out of it? What about when they were newly famous and you were still at school, did any of the stories upset you or cause you issues?

Do your children know their aunt/uncle is famous and does that affect them?

edit for another question - were you ever bothered by the press/fans outside your home as a teenager, if so how did that affect you and did your parents do anything to mitigate that?

Yes, this sums up my experience and feelings on it.

That's been my (very limited) experience. In my partner's wider family there is a 'celebrity' - not A-list by any stretch, but a UK household name. We have been out with her for dinner several times - sometimes it's ok, particularly if it's in her home town as I guess people there are used to seeing her around. But sometimes we've experienced people staring at her/us throughout our meals, taking sneaky photos, even people coming up and interrupting our meal to say 'excuse me, are you XX'. She's not a fame-seeking person, it was never her ambition to be famous and she doesn't have a celebrity life. I would hate to have to deal with what she does regularly, to have no anonymity.
