AMA: Former model in late 30s often called beautiful by others

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 23/03/2026 15:07

I'm a former model and now in my late 30s but still regularly described by strangers and friends alike as "beautiful." I've noticed that people who haven't happened to fall neatly into Western beauty standards are often curious about people who do, so AMA.

And if you just want to come and tell me that I'm conceited and probably not as beautiful as I think I am, that's OK too- we all need a hobby.

OP posts:

Actually if you go back and read through the posts you will see that it was the op who started being a ‘right tit’ with me when I questioned her about the safety of meeting up with literal strangers off the internet and asked how she protected herself. She then started getting snarky and made some comment about agency models looking down on her.

We must be reading a different thread then 🫠

Maybe put your phone away and watch some telly or something. Time to leave the chat 😅 regardless of OPs modelling status (or lack of as you’ve banged on about all evening to try to make yourself feel more superior or better , I presume?) you’ve just honed in like a bored person who needs to walk away. Not cool Kevin not cool 😎

I’ll do what I like thank you! I’m a big girl. Don’t need to be told when to put my phone away 😅

If I’m soooo boring then stop replying to me

21ZIGGY · 23/03/2026 23:10

This is one of the most pathetic attempts I have seen to derail a thread. I can't see op has said or done anything wrong, She's been honest from the outset about what she means when she talks about the modelling that she did.

Some people need to put the wine and their phone away

You are so chippy. OP sounds very down to earth and I’ve found this ama interesting. Why don’t you just leave her alone.

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 23/03/2026 17:49

Maybe she would! I did a whole shoot around an Edwardian postcard theme once.

🤣 To be fair PL Travers had quite a bohemian life though I don't think she did art modelling...

Carla786 · 24/03/2026 01:56

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 23/03/2026 18:46

That's quite hurtful, I've answered every question I've been asked. I've bristled a bit at the "proper model" questions which were clearly intended to needle me and prove that my career wasn't valid. As I've mentioned, the freelance modelling world is full of talented, interesting and lovely people and we all know about the "agency models" who consider themselves a cut above. Even when they barely ever get booked.

Op, this is very intetesting, don't be put off by unhelpful posts.

My question: was it awkward/odd at first to pose nude? If yes, I suppose you got used to it?

Carla786 · 24/03/2026 01:57

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 23/03/2026 19:49

No thanks, I never wanted to be a "proper model" it was something I was asked to do and was really fun whilst it lasted. I already had a successful career and now I focus on that full time. I'm sure some agency models are lovely, but some need to come back down to earth and realise that just like me, they are just a pretty girl getting paid to have photos taken and smile (or pout) for the camera.

How much acting is involved? I mean, expressions etc?

FinalFinalFile · 24/03/2026 01:58

Flyingintotheunknown · 23/03/2026 17:50

No worries. So just amateur modelling you did then.
P.S. Height isn’t really an issue for commercial modelling. I’m 5ft4 and was signed to multiple agencies.

OP is answering honestly about the type of modeling she’s done. I’m not sure your comments are coming across the way you think they are.

Carla786 · 24/03/2026 02:03

muggart · 23/03/2026 21:17

I think their opinion would be there's more than one kind of model. Just like some actors are in multi-million £ films, some are in soaps, some are working as waitresses trying to get jobs, some set up theatre companies and tour their own one woman show or join a company, some just appear at their local amateur theatre - they are all actors and they all need to be good at what they do.

i think this analogy has explained it really well to those of us who aren’t in the industry.

it had never occurred to me that some people who get paid to have photos taken of them looking pretty look down on other people who get paid to have photos taken of them looking pretty for not being “real models” 🤣

All very eye opening anyway!

There's hierarchies in all industries, sadly. It's stupid to snipe like that , of course...

Carla786 · 24/03/2026 02:08

Slowdives · 23/03/2026 21:14

I suppose what I am trying to work out is how other people thinking you are attractive on the outside actually translates to feeling good for the person on the inside. Isn’t it all just enjoying the feeling of being objectified?

Yes, that's on my mind too.

I'm sure there are male artists who can treat models in a professional way and as OP said,in her area there were rules enforced. I do wonder how much of the motivation for the photographers is prurient though. After all, traditionally artists' models were often gfs or at least lovers.

I think I would feel less suspicious of a gay man doing female nudes.

I understand,,OP, that you said you are friendly with soms of these photographers still and I accept I may be over suspicious. It's like gynaecology in a sense, I suppose: some men may go into it for prurient/creepy reasons but many just want to practise the job and don't see women's bodies in a sexual way in that context.

Carla786 · 24/03/2026 02:14

Flyingintotheunknown · 23/03/2026 18:17

Not so much rude. However, I do find it strange that someone can come on here and shout from the rooftops that they’re so beautiful that they were a model But in reality was just a model in the amateur community.

You probably don’t realise that mainstream models have to put in a lot more hard work and jump through many more hoops to even get the privilege of being called a model. If it was as easy as just signing up to a site and saying you’re a model then everyone would be doing it.

What kind of hard work?

Worriedmumma2025 · 24/03/2026 03:46

@Flyingintotheunknown
At this point it just reads as you repeatedly trying to knock OP down. It’s unnecessary and frankly a bit unpleasant. You’ve made your point (several times) - what are you aiming to do here with the nasty comments?

Carla786 · 24/03/2026 02:14

What kind of hard work?

Face to face castings, having to travel from one end of the country to another at your own expense to attend castings, maybe you’re seen by the casting director for 5 minutes after waiting in a queue of other models for 3 hours and don’t even book the job. Then there’s self tape auditions which you have to film yourself and send, maybe have to learn a few lines on them and film them in a certain way and submit them within a tight deadline. Working long hours, being out of the house from 5 in the morning and not getting home until midnight, constantly having to be available at the last minute in case you get booked on a job. Having to travel miles apart for each casting and maybe having to attend 7 castings in a day. Travelling by yourself at a young age and having to find your way around in an unfamiliar city. The constant rejection and constant not knowing when you will next get a booking.
If you’re shooting e-comm you could be changing into up to 80 garments a day. If you’re shooting a commercial you have to fil the same take over and over again, saying the same lines over and over again and doing the same actions over and over again.
Is that hard work enough for you?

FinalFinalFile · 24/03/2026 01:58

I think it’s more that she was claiming she fitted into ‘western beauty standards’ and got to be a model because of that where she’s not being honest. The true reason is because she signed up to a site and made a profile on it. Hardly being honest.

I was not having a go at op in the beginning. I asked how she keeps herself safe, considering she is meeting men off the internet and taking her clothes off for them and considering that so many other women who get into that line of work have been raped and then SA’d. These men are unvetted and most are not photographers.

It was op who then started to take a snipe at me. Maybe you should go back and read the posts

FalulahTalulah · 24/03/2026 04:39

Flyingintotheunknown · 23/03/2026 21:21

Not looking down on. It’s more how the op portrayed herself in her first post. It’s a bit like claiming you play for England in the world cup when you’re really playing for your local football club on a Sunday afternoon

You’re not coming across well. This is like someone who plays football for a local team calling themselves a footballer, and then someone else coming along and angrily ranting that they’re not a footballer because they don’t play for a team in the top league, and it’s not safe to play for local teams, and the ‘big’ teams won’t even consider you - who cares? She’s still a footballer (model!) and enjoyed it!

Yes but to be a top footballer playing for England you need to have the skill.
Being a model you need to have the look, measurements and many other things. Claiming you became a model on your ‘typical western beauty standard’ looks when you clearly didn’t isn’t being honest.

Also it really ISN’T safe what the op was doing. You should go and read some of the many stories from the women who STILL do this line of work.

But you obviously aren’t in that industry so you wouldn’t understand but come on here ranting at me about something you don’t understand.

FalulahTalulah · 24/03/2026 04:44

This sounds very boring but not hard work.

I’ve read all of your posts. In fact I’ve read the entire thread. In fact it is you that started it with this:

‘No worries. So just amateur modelling you did then.
P.S. Height isn’t really an issue for commercial modelling. I’m 5ft4 and was signed to multiple agencies.’

You obviously aren’t able to see how you’re coming across despite lots of people pointing out to you, so I’m going to give up here.

OP thanks- I’ve enjoyed the thread (despite this attempt by a derailer to tear you down).

I said amateur modelling because op was giving the impression that she got to be this amazing model because of her looks. I was not intending to cause offence. I came on the thread and saw the title and was going to ask her if she had similar experiences to me. It then got me interested because I’ve heard of so many horror stories in the amateur world. It was op who then got defensive about it and started claiming I’m up my arse.

Height really isn’t an issue anymore like it once used to be. So saying you can’t be a model because you’re 5ft3 doesn’t mean you’re too short to be signed to an agency. There is such a thing as commercial modelling where you don’t have to fit into the strict height standards and measurements of a catwalk model.

I’m not disputing the facts re height restrictions etc.
You told me to read the thread and see who started being snippy first. I’m pointing out that it was you. The OP’s first post was fine.
