AMA: Former model in late 30s often called beautiful by others

I'm a former model and now in my late 30s but still regularly described by strangers and friends alike as "beautiful." I've noticed that people who haven't happened to fall neatly into Western beauty standards are often curious about people who do, so AMA.

And if you just want to come and tell me that I'm conceited and probably not as beautiful as I think I am, that's OK too- we all need a hobby.

Is there anything else that you'd really like other people to notice about you? Does it getting boring to be noticed for your beauty?

CanHardlyBearTo · 23/03/2026 15:12

What kind of modelling did you do, and what was your segment of the industry like to work? Whose looks would you like to have if you could do a bodyswap?

DamnBuster · 23/03/2026 15:13

Is it easy choosing clothes and dressing well or do you struggle like the rest of us?

ForAzureSeal · 23/03/2026 15:13

Do you find you need to be extra nice and self-deprecating to people so you don't get thought of as snooty?

begonefoulclutter · 23/03/2026 15:14

Do you find that people often associate the appearance of beauty with a lack of brains?

Yes, it does to be honest. Especially when it's the only thing people seem to notice about me. I'm getting older now and I'm enjoying people commenting on other things sometimes!

Do you worry about ageing?

thestudio · 23/03/2026 15:15

Does it make you doubt people's sincerity? I mean, do you always wonder whether they're after you if male or sort of over-awed or bedazzled if female?

TheSlantedOwl · 23/03/2026 15:17

Which star or recognisable figure do you resemble? 🙂

I was mostly an art-nude/ low-key glamour model and a bit of lifestyle- I never did anything overly sexual although there are rumours I did and I've found a few threads on the internet of people searching for the mysterious photos. 😂

I always found it very empowering and positive. Occasionally there was a creepy photographer but I had ways to protect myself and over time you get "spidey senses" of who is going to be dodgy before meeting.

I am a very "natural" sort of look, favoured for "vintage" type shoots so maybe it would be fun to be a more glamourous, modern sort of face and body! Also, I'm very, very pale so perhaps someone who can get a nice tan.

Do you also / have you also experienced heartbreak or unrequited love like the not-so-good looking lot, or is it usually you that rejects someone or breaks up with someone?

Yes, I generally find it easy as I know what suits me. I don't really change my style up and have had most of my clothes for 10+ years.

Sometimes yes! Also some people always assume you want their husband/boyfriend even though I've been happily married for a decade- so you have to be really careful to find the line between "too friendly" and "rude" to those men.

Sorry, you believe that people who aren't typically "western standard" beautiful are curious about those who are?

What does this mean? You find ugly/average people wonder about beautiful people? What makes you think this? Is it usually munters that ask you about your beauty whereas beautiful people dont?

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 23/03/2026 15:24

Not particularly, I think because I'm quite an old-fashioned, natural sort of look.

I think it's big busty blondes that get under-estimated.

In some circumstances I think you have to do less to prove your intelligence. Job interviews have always gone well for me.

A bit, sometimes. I wonder how much of my luck has been down to beauty and if life will change for me when I no longer have it.

Do you do any modelling at all anymore? What else do you do for work?

I have learned the hard way that most men who are my "friends" are not my friends at all and will immediately make a pass if they get the opportunity, or otherwise get suddenly furious and say that you've been leading them on and not interested in a relationship the whole time. Even though you've been clear you only see them as a friend from the start.

The most common ones I get compared to are Winona Ryder, Julie Andrews (in her Mary Poppins era), Audrey Hepburn and Anne Hathaway.

It's usually the other person who has been interested first but if I'm interested at all, I'm all in and wear my heart on my sleeve, so I've been heartbroken a few times when the initial interest turned out to be just interest in sex and nothing more than that.

Do you have to watch what you eat or are you naturally slender and can eat loads? My friend was a model in her teens/early 20s and the pressure on her to remain very slim was quite intense and quite damaging. Even now, she frets about having the (very occasional) takeaway.

People don't "ask me about my beauty", it would be a weird question to ask, but people are often asking online or even posting videos imagining what life must be like if you fit those standards and if it's really easier/harder or the same.

Not really, I lost interest in it to be honest and I don't need the money. I am a civil servant earning quite well.

I am naturally a very small build and like to cook healthily from scratch, so I was very slim in my 20s, around a BMI of 19. It's now 24 and I'm not that happy with it but I don't hate it either. I am aiming to lose a little weight but I love food and wine. So I guess yes, I do have to watch what I eat a little but not so much I'm miserable.

Although it’s not my ama and I’ve never been a model, I never got tired of being called beautiful/gorgeous/good looking etc. I wouldn’t be called those things now but heck, I enjoyed it at the time. 😁
