My child was in a S Club Juniors, ask me anything

BeEagerEagle · 02/05/2025 20:07

In 2001, my child auditioned for a CBBC show called ‘S Club Search’ and got a place in a child pop group who initially were meant to support S Club 7 on a one time support gig basis. This band was called S Club Juniors, later known as S Club 8.

The band ended up taking off and we basically had to sign or children away to Simon Fuller’s management to release a single. The kids were given tutors and chaperones, and spent most of their time in hotels (the ones London based stayed either their parents) or on the road. After that, they went on tour and I only saw my child once every couple of months. It was brutal but I knew that’s what they wanted to do.

they released two albums and the second one didn’t do that well, Simon Fuller tried them on a TV show called I Dream, however that also tanked. My child will admit that themselves. They all got dropped when aged 14-17. He said they had grown out of their roles a bit.

Now they are in their late thirties and trying to get back into the entertainment industry fully but it’s difficult. They’ve never quite got over their time in the band. They released music but it never really went anywhere. They would never say so, but it doesn’t help them that two of their fellow band members went on to become big stars, both were in a chart topping girl band and now are TV presenters.

their band (minus the two still-successful members) were meant to reunite for a TV show a long while ago, but for various reasons it didn’t happen. When S Club reunited, S Club juniors didn’t get asked to reunite as there was ‘no call’ for it and only a few were up for reuniting. (My child, and another boy and girl member)

they are still acquaintances with S club 7 and went to Paul Cattermoles funeral.

I know my (now adult) child doesn’t regret the choices they made as a child, but feels sad as an adult.

AMA- child (now adult) is also here to answer questions too and is happy to answer questions about specific members and music!

What was their biggest or most exciting performance? I remember seeing them perform at Buckingham Palace for the Queens jubilee and thought that must have been amazing to be a part of.

Their first performance at Wembley, no contest.

One more question... Would any of the members ever do something like celebrity big brother or I'm a celebrity? Have any of them ever been approached for something like this, and if so what was the reason they didn't do it?

Frankie did I’m A Celebrity when they went to Wales

Frankie did I’m A Celebrity when they went to Wales

Ah thanks! I don't actually watch it but usually hear about who's in the jungle from social media etc. I suppose I mean more the members who aren't famous these days... These kind of shows seem to attract niche 'celebrities' from back in the day. And sometimes a good way to launch a new career

Gundogday · 11/05/2025 21:04

Why didn’t they retain the ‘junior’ name, and change it to ‘8’?

It was because they were trying to rebrand them to make them sound more “adult” for the sundown album. Also to try and appeal to a wider audience (not just kids) with the breakup of SC7.

I have asked in the chat, sorry for slow response. I know bar Frankie and Rochelle, none have been formally asked. Rochelle had an offer for IAC, declined it and they offered it to Frankie instead and she went on it in wales,

two of the boys actively dislike reality TV now🤣, one says he would be open to it if he didn’t have any jobs booked.

two of the girls said they’d consider it, one says no because she’d miss her kids too much.

as bad as it sounds (as I’m a mother to one) I can’t see them offering reality TV to anyone bar Frankie or Rochelle.

Thanks for asking them! If any of them wanted to do it, I reckon they could be the ones to do the approaching. There have been far more obscure celebrities on these things, so just because Frankie and Rochelle have had more fame I don't think theyd be the only ones producers would be interested in! I'm not sure we all knew who Peter Andre was until he went on IAC

BeEagerEagle · 12/05/2025 03:24

The producers of these shows contact the celebrity’s agents to ask them if their client would be interested (at least that’s how it worked with Frankie as I spoke to her mum about it around the time) and not all the juniors have agents so I’m not sure how it would work for the ones that don’t.

out of the three who would be “maybe” interested, only one of them has an agent.

its actually quite a long arduous process being asked for IAC. Can’t speak of CBB as I don’t know anyone who’s done it personally.

Lots of shade being thrown at Rochelle. She has absolutely no control over this woman posting about her 'child'. Could be a total fantasist.

There is no shade at all about her in this thread

I bet if you took it to other places aside from mumsnet people will be dying to ask so much stuff! You've solved my 11 year old mysteries! Have the band actually seen and read the thread? I wish I knew who's mum you were that'll forever be the next mystery

I think it’s Aaron’s Mum. She said a few posts ago ‘this is the only question that’s really stumped him’ and she isn’t Calvin’s Mum. She could conceivably be Jay’s Mum but Jay has been more successful than Aaron in ‘the business’ so it’s more likely to be Aaron.

Well, Aaron is a more successful dancer obviously but Jay has been more successful in musicals (singing). They’re both successful but hopefully you know what I mean. OP’s child laments not getting more interest in their singing so that’s why I think it’s Aaron.

This has been such a great thread! I loved S Club Juniors (I was 13 when they came out). I have some happy memories associated with SCJ music. I’ve enjoyed hearing about them all now.

Noodlehen · 12/05/2025 15:13

Loosely following, so there’s been no proper contact bar the WhatsApp group since someone’s bday party a while ago? Is that right?

but Rochelle and Frankie have given permission to be discussed? I find that so strange that you’d even ask them.

im assuming some of the questions have made it into the WhatsApp group, what have they all said?

Yes there is a WhatsApp group. A few nights ago (when the thread started) me and my child had a glass or two of wine and thought it would be funny, they suggested it in the group. Everyone thought it was cool as long as certain things (children, families) wasn’t discussed. We didn’t expect it to blow up. The link got shared in the group to it.

I am glad you’ve (and others have) enjoyed it. It’s disappointing there are a few people who have been negative throughout. It was genuinely supposed to just be a bit of fun for old fans.

I don’t think you’re understanding what im asking. But I absolutely wasn’t being rude if it’s me you’re referring to in your second post.

I find it strange you asked them when none of them speak to each other, that is quite odd. Such a random way of starting up convo when nobody has spoken in years… Although it’s been interesting so I’m glad you did. And I also find it strange that they gave permission because they’re quite famous - but also there’s zero harm from your thread so I guess I can see why they wouldn’t mind.

like I said, I didn’t mean to come across rude. Just all seems odd. But I’ve found the stuff surrounding the time in SCJ really interesting, so thank you.

the group post is pretty regular chat wise in terms of the group speaking to each other. It’s just been a while since a lot (the ones who aren’t F+R) have seen each other. Family commitments and work etc.

oh my god!!! this has been such a fun thread!!! just skimmed through it so I'm sorry if I'm asking repeat questions! I'd love to know more about how they did the songs?? I think somebody asked above but I couldn't find the answer. How did they decide who sang what?did everybody sing everything in the studio?or where they told what to practice singing before they went in so everybody knew their parts? When did daisy and calvin lik ee each other was it the start of the band middle or end? (the small crush) what room did they used to practice in at pineapple studios can any of them remember? I've been there a few times and I saw in a video above they went there to rehearse. Do any members still sing at all or perform? Was that ladder supposed to be there in new direction video at the start hahahah! What is one thing they all hated about the experience individually and one thing they loved? I've read the comment above about them being on I'm a celebrity I'd be so excited if one of them came on that show!!!! It'd be so intriguing to see what they're all like as people, thank you for doing this thread! That band was such a big play in my childhood I still have some of their songs on my playlists!!

The title of it is “juniors” - not v exciting! I think it was to differentiate as one of the people in the group is in another group with some of the “seniors” ie S club 7 🤣🤣🤣

The production team and management decided who sung what portion of the song.

Vocals were practiced regularly with David and Carrie Grant. This included warmups, practicing for the tours and running through the whole single/album. This was done in a rented space similar to the dance studios.

RE recording, all the juniors would record the chorus separately and then a mixer from the production team would put their recordings together. For solo parts, each person who was doing them would go in on their own. For the sundown bridge Stacey and Calvin recorded separately as they struggled to harmonise together and got the giggles a lot. Harmonising (being able to) was a big problem in the band all the way through. The only member who could do it right away was Hannah.

Calvin and Daisy liked each other for a short while at the start but Calvin ended up having a crush on one of the backing dancers and that was the end of that. Chaperones were keen to stamp out any sort of dating between the members.

My child replies they had no idea the pineapple dance studio rooms had names, but it was on the ground floor.

Only Jay sings professionally at the moment.

Yes, the ladder was supposed to be there.

Hated

  • getting up early, being tired loads
  • Not having any sort of creative control over anything including how they dressed
  • Missing family and friends

Loved
-performing and being paid to do what they loved
-missing school (lol)

  • meeting famous people, being famous themselves
  • The opportunities being in the band has given them in their adult life

What kind if opportunities have they been given as adults as a result of being in s club juniors? (except The Saturdays for Rochelle and Frankie)
