AMA Income over £500k

Following the thread on the disadvantages of earning just over £50k, it got me thinking that if some people think that is a huge amount to earn, what do they think of my life.

We live in North London. Husband earns a lot, over £500k most years. We live in a big house, with a huge mortgage, 3 children at private school, 3 dogs, own a ski chalet which is let out as well as for our use. I don't work, I did try a part time job 5 years ago and whilst I loved it, it cause too much stress at home because my husband is used to me doing everything.

We obviously live very comfortably, but also there are lots of things we'd like to do but can't afford the big projects at the moment. My husbands job is very stressful.

AMA. I am absolutely not gloating, I know only too well how fortunate we are.

Do you think we live in a fair society?

chillipopcorn1 · 03/03/2024 12:11

You've mentioned being generous with family - how far does that extend eg. Do you pay for stuff for loved ones? Are your siblings etc similarly well off or is there a disparity?

NeedtostopusingMNsomuch · 03/03/2024 12:11

I was wondering why 14k doesn’t look crazy high and just realised that 500k into an income calculator is 23k a month, and 300k is 14k a month so you must be putting a huge amount in investments a month / year? Just curious, do these, plus income from your air bnb and ski chalet, not enable you to do the renovations etc you need?

What charity work specifically?

Lots in local school, nhs voluntary visits, food bank shifts, domestic abuse mentor meetings.

I know of a couple of women in similar positions. One is the DW of a platonic male friend of mine. She works insanely hard, her DH has a good job but as she earns more he does more school pickups etc. She comes from money (millionaire father) and his parents are fairly well off too.

The other whose DH earned more is family friends of my parents. She was a SAHM/P for all of her life apart from when she met her DH. He had his own successful business for years and she was the cordon bleu cook wife and studied but also helped him when he started another business later on. He didn’t have a good relationship with his DC as he was always away on business and working.

That’s just 2 couples I know of… there are others.

So not sure OP that you’re as well off as you think, if it were me I’d be worried in case yours has an affair or loses his job.

What is the point of this post?

This. I wanted to ask how you got to earn that much, whether you had advice for other women etc. but turns out you don’t earn it so I don’t really see the point of your thread apart from “marry well”.

im not suggesting you can’t have a full life as a SAHM but your thread title isnt about that.

NeedtostopusingMNsomuch · 03/03/2024 12:14

Also, what is your husband like?! Is he a fairly grounded person, is he boastful, is he tight with money, is he very generous, does he buy extravagant gifts, is he the saver or are you?! Is he completely transparent with you with all finances?

Viviennemary · 03/03/2024 12:15

If your DH left would you cope?

Growlybear83 · 03/03/2024 12:16

If you're a stay at home mum and your children are older, why do you have a gardener? Why don't you do the garden yourself? That question would apply just as much to anyone who doesn't work and who has older children, nothing to do with income.

£500k gross includes the bonus, and the bonus is the bit that is variable.
£14kx12=£168k. x2 roughly to add back the tax paid and thats 336.. Roughly a 180 bonus, means 90 take home cash at bonus time.

the bonus pays for holidays and extras, and we spread that throughout the year.

Is that nice gelato place still on Albion Road?

Whatzzaapbaby · 03/03/2024 12:17

If your monthly income is £14k how is he earning half a million a year?

HangingOver · 03/03/2024 12:17

What kind of baked beans do you buy?

HangingOver · 03/03/2024 12:17

Personally I hate gardening with a passion but I want a nice garden and can afford a gardener

Spirallingdownwards · 03/03/2024 12:18

There is no reason a woman can't earn this amount though in the professions mentioned above and many do. This could easily be a thread started by a woman who did earn this but in this case just isn't.

There are all sorts of AMA threads so if you don't want to know what it is like to live in a family set up where the income is over £500k (albeit her DH's income) I am unsure why some people are berating OP for starting this one.

Tailfeather · 03/03/2024 12:19

Do you get an allowance or is it a completely joint bank account that you can spend however you like?

PinkiOcelot · 03/03/2024 11:42

What is the point of this post?

Bragging?

Whatzzaapbaby · 03/03/2024 12:19

Why do you splurge £90,000 on holidays etc for 5 people? If you already own a ski chalet where on Earth are you holidaying?

HangingOver · 03/03/2024 12:17

What kind of baked beans do you buy?

There are only 2 correct answers to this question anyway whatever you earn - Heinz or Branston.

Ah ok, wow that is a seriously big bonus!

So ALLEGEDLY Aldi does a sub 30p tin that tastes as good as Heinz's. Can it be true?

We had a gardener when we agreed out on £50k a year between us because we hate it but like a nice garden. People can have other priorities to others.

Daffsinfeb · 03/03/2024 12:22

What would you do if your DH left you?

How is your marriage generally? Do you personally compromise more on things in exchange for the lifestyle he funds?
