AMA Income over £500k

Following the thread on the disadvantages of earning just over £50k, it got me thinking that if some people think that is a huge amount to earn, what do they think of my life.

We live in North London. Husband earns a lot, over £500k most years. We live in a big house, with a huge mortgage, 3 children at private school, 3 dogs, own a ski chalet which is let out as well as for our use. I don't work, I did try a part time job 5 years ago and whilst I loved it, it cause too much stress at home because my husband is used to me doing everything.

We obviously live very comfortably, but also there are lots of things we'd like to do but can't afford the big projects at the moment. My husbands job is very stressful.

AMA. I am absolutely not gloating, I know only too well how fortunate we are.

I think being a SAHM is a luxury and a privilege these days so I don't blame you at all for checking in your job - but why did you have NHS births? There's no way I'd be giving birth in an overstretched and understaffed NHS hospital if i could afford private.

We could have afforded a private birth but 1) it seemed insane to spend £20k on what was, basically, 24 hours of our life; and 2) I wanted to have my baby somewhere there was a proper NICU and paediatric consultants down the corridor rather than an ambulance away.

Can you post some pictures of your house please? Thanks 😊

Ha! Sorry absolutely not

@Moodul you are absolutely right. Some people have that much money people don't even know what they are paying for. Private doctors (most) work in NHS, when there's a complications with private patients they come to NHS!

Genuinely don’t see the point of this thread OP. For people outside of London who earn much less, they will think you live a very wealthy life. But in reality, for London, it’s not wealthy wealthy.

My DH earns a similar salary. I also earn a six figure salary (though much less as I’m more junior). Yes we have a nice house in NW London, go on nice holidays and will send our children to private school, but it’s not mansion and live in servants money. It’s comfortable and can afford nice things money. Starting such a thread is designed to make people like you’re wealthy wealthy so not sure what you’re trying to achieve when you’re only talking about £500k a year.

I’m loving this thread! I love to fantasise what it would be like to be rich!!

Do you fly first class?

How many cars do you own?

Do you have any horses?

Do people have to take their shoes off before they come in your house?

Do you ever take your children to McDonalds? Or go to the local Chippy for tea?

Do you have lots of massages and beauty treatments?

Are you a coffee drinker or a tea drinker?

Do you have corgis? Or purebred cats?

Can people please stop distracting OP with sensible.

OP, most expensive candle. I need to know.

I can't believe you eat supernoodles. Seems very out of place in the gleaming marble kitchen I'm imagining.

Trust me even in London this is not a usual scenario, unless you live in a Wandsworth or Islington bubble.

Good news is that there is no max to pension pots any more, so he can pay into that again.

Bad news is that you can't make "lump sum" payments into pensions for people who don't work/don't have an income. The maximum per year you can put in is £2,880.

So, your tax situation if you've been putting large amounts into a pension in your name could be tricky.

He knows all this! TBH I leave all the finance stuff to him now, can you tell.....

What is it with MN and the fury at women who don't work? OP can afford not to work.

I thought this. If they are married half of everything is OPs. I wouldn't drag myself into the office if I didn't have to.

piealhxiprshl · 03/03/2024 12:41

What are the things you want to do but can't (either because of money or other restrictions on you)

Edited

MN thinks every SAHM is destined to find themselves penniless and homeless when their husband eventually bins them for a younger model.

Yep, I think it’s quite amazing that the OP has an average household income of 20k a month after tax and doesn’t have a cleaner! I would def have a gardener, it’s a thankless and never ending task in this house and requires expertise I don’t have!

If OP is like one of my friends, a cleaner will never be as good as her. No matter how much they earn, there are some things you don’t outsource.

I've had a very large white company candle before, but I usually buy cheaper ones from tkmaxx because then I don't feel guilty burning them all the time!

Love the Aldo ones too. Jo Malone dupe is best

Once your children have been through schooling, do you think you will return to work?

Do you miss having an identity in terms of career?

People get their identities from many other things besides their careers!

Opinione · 03/03/2024 12:45

Have you ever considered reducing your monthly financial outgoings or husband's working hours so you can have a better quality of life?

Having only £3k per month to live off out of £14k take home pay - and no cleaner for a big house!- seems ridiculous!

So move from a 6 bed to a 4 bed? Sell the ski chalet?

Agreed. OP’s DH has done well but it isn’t out of the ordinary. Not really.

I wouldn't.

I be volunteering with animals. I'd find purpose in that and I'd love it.

MrsRelo · 03/03/2024 12:46

What do you have in savings/investments?
How much do you spend on holidays per year?
How is the money managed on a monthly basis (eg does his pay going to a joint account and then some squirreled away and the rest is as you both choose)?

Moodul · 03/03/2024 12:46

Except objectively it is, even in London the average salary is only around 41k.

No more pointless than your post.

EcstaticMarmalade · 03/03/2024 12:47

If you were able to relocate to reduce your outgoings, but keep the same income level, would you?

4610J · 03/03/2024 12:47

@Moodul I think we are on the same page. I could find more interesting things to do than work. Sadly, not in this position

hby9628 · 03/03/2024 12:47

11k a month outgoings before any other bills? That's bonkers. Do you never consider downsizing the house and having more disposable income each month? Imagine all the fun to be had! Not judging just trying to understand.

MrsRelo · 03/03/2024 12:48

Oh and what does he do to work? What did you do previously for work?
