Following the thread on the disadvantages of earning just over £50k, it got me thinking that if some people think that is a huge amount to earn, what do they think of my life.

We live in North London. Husband earns a lot, over £500k most years. We live in a big house, with a huge mortgage, 3 children at private school, 3 dogs, own a ski chalet which is let out as well as for our use. I don't work, I did try a part time job 5 years ago and whilst I loved it, it cause too much stress at home because my husband is used to me doing everything.

We obviously live very comfortably, but also there are lots of things we'd like to do but can't afford the big projects at the moment. My husbands job is very stressful.

AMA. I am absolutely not gloating, I know only too well how fortunate we are.

I absolutely love my job but I would also appreciate the kind of life op lives. I do think my dc miss out when I’m at meetings and can’t get home for the school pick up (well never.) No matter how reliable the childcare is it’s not the same. I don’t think I would feel unfulfilled if I didn’t work especially with a busy lifestyle like op’s with three kids.

Everyone is different and I know in my heart of hearts being a SAHM right now is not for me. I'm 36 so maybe in future I will be. Started my career late, after a few dead end companies and the last 7 years I've been climbing the corporate ladder.

Even maternity leave wasn't for me, it was boring and I missed the thrill of work. I took 10 months which was enough for me.

I don't think I would be fulfilled doing the chores, I'm happier to outsource and earn more money to do so. I do still do 99% of bath and bedtimes.

I plan to take at least a year off in about 7 years time when my children are 7 and 9, all being well with this pregnancy.

I have legitimately never enjoyed working. I like to spend my days reading, writing, making art, cooking, looking after my animals, and taking care of my kids. In an ideal world that is what I would do.

I do think you need to be careful if you are a stay at home mum that you are not going to be bored when your kids leave home. It's one thing to be a SAHM but another to simply not work.
I enjoy not working but that's because I have a lot of things that I enjoy doing. I get a lot of pleasure from my 'hobbies' but I don't think everyone can.
I've a lot of friends in their late 50 and 60s who work part time and that seems to work well for them.

Could you please answer my question, I think you missed it!

Was wondering what job & industry your husband works in?

OP did come back with more info on this but it’s been deleted, probably to avoid being identified

It will be either finance (investment banking / pe / hedge fund manager) or partner at law firm or big 4 consultancy.
Our household income is similar and is one of the above.

OP, £500k a year is a monthly income of £23k, if you're getting £14k a month where is the other £9k going? What am I missing?

There is a big bonus, that brings the final salary up to 500k

Ooooh, that makes sense, thank you @Teenangels
