Stuck in Rhodes

I was just east of Gennadi, 5 minutes away, at Atlantica Dreams resort (Tui). All day yesterday there was a steady stream of evacuated guests from other hotels arriving.
The fire seemed to die down at around 3pm. But by 7 it was raging again.
We were told one of us needed to stay up all night to listen gif the evacuation siren.
There were hundreds of evacuees there by then.
Just before 10pm we were evacuated. We walked to the road where there was a coach and some cattle trucks. It was chaos and hard not to be separated from my DCs (23, 19, 17 & 17). We had no idea where we were going. I had to calm and keep company 2 distraught children (circa 14 and 8) who had got separated from their parents. I lost a shoe and one DC their phone. We had to jettison the one small cabin size suitcase we had brought our essentials in.
Our truck broke down and we walked about a mile, again not knowing where we were going, and were eventually directed onto Gennadi beach. There were around 2000 people there all crammed together. Small boats, capacity around 10, went back and forth between ferry boats and the shore. There was no Dunkirk spirit. People were tired, upset and frightened. Some had not slept for 2 nights.

It took 4 hours until we finally managed to get on one at around 2. It was bedlam with everyone shoving and barging. I was separated from the DCs several times. Nobody knew where we were going.

We were on the ferry around 4 hours before arriving in Rhodes Town at c6.30am. We sailed through ash clouds and people had towels tied round their faces. People were taken off in different buses. We ended up in a school with 150 others. But there was nothing there for us, no beds, mats, washing facilities or food and it was boiling hot.
There was no list so the authorities have no idea who has gone where. It is a total lie for Tui to say they have re accommodated everyone. They have not. They have no idea where I am and until their phone lines open I cannot contact them either. The only info we have been given is an FCO number for advice on travel and consular assistance (which we don't need).
Luckily I have 24 hour insurance access and when I'd re charged my phone was able to establish I am covered (was worried it would be an "act of God"). I have booked a hotel for 1 night, after a long search. I've just arrived - it's chaos with everyone sleeping on the floor.
Just before we left the school a band of volunteers arrived laden with food and one of them thinks our hotel may have been burned down and we are unlikely to get back to try to retrieve our stuff. She says Gennadi is mostly gone.

We leave on Wednesday. We can't check in here til 2 and need to go and buy clothes and essentials. All we have is what we are standing in.

I'm still dying to hear how @PrincessofWellies got to Ecuador and Australia since she doesn't fly anywhere.

Did you swim to the luxury cruise ship?

Or is it more of a case of "do as I say, not as I do?"

We had a yacht until recently. Unfortunately my partner could no longer manage the long hauls so we sold up and retired from the sea sailing.

Axcis · 24/07/2023 23:36

Just wanted to say hugs and thank you for your story and I'll be checking in to see you safely home.

@countrygirl I was thinking that. It's a normal human reaction to focus on the mundane. But what a leap to say that this makes her (paraphrasing) shallow and lacking in empathy and she needs to learn a lesson. I can rise above the sniping at me but not at her. She's a young girl, confused and unsettled, and she's done nothing wrong. She's a wonderfully empathetic person in real life. Being sad she's lost her things doesn't in any way change that. Competitive suffering is not a thing.

Talking of which, I'm feeling the physical effects today. The soles of my feet are really bruised from the shale beach - my only remotely sensible shoes are sliders and I didn't want to lose them so took them off and put them in my bag when we were at the water's edge (where we then remained for 4 hours). Stiff neck and back from sleeping upright on the boat.
<Waiting for the pile on, calling me self-centred, selfish, lacking in empathy>

you don't have to justify yourself or family OP, of course she's devastated.i think you've done amazingly well considering the circumstances. hope you're sorted soon.

So you sailed to South America to board your luxury cruise ship, with swimming pools, hot tubs and entertainment for your 11 week sail around South America, and you have the audacity to critise someone for going to Greece for a week with their children for their first foreign holiday in years? And you think now, after they've abandoned their belongings and fled for their lives, now is the time to lecture them on climate change?

Honestly, you couldn't make this up 😂😂😂

On your cruise (the 11 week cruise) how did you find the lobster and filet mignon? Was the champagne sufficiently chilled?

No we took a boat. I've visited 41 countries to date but there are lots of different ways of travelling. Trains and boats are a better carbon footprint than flying.

PrincessFiorimonde · 25/07/2023 00:12

All good wishes to you and your kids, OP.

Earlier, I heard a woman on the radio describe burning embers falling on her and her family as they fled. I can't imagine how terrifying that must have felt.

I've been to Rhodes a few times and loved it there. My heart goes out to everyone, both local people and visitors, caught up in this nightmare.

Hawkinsresident · 25/07/2023 03:11

OP, I’m near Rhodes old town since last week and seeing the local and staff quite distressed. We had evacuees in last two days and heard some horror stories. Sorry you had to suffer. The staff at our hotel are just incredibly helpful while being tense with the situation. Yesterday’s windy day was making life difficult.

we fly back to Gatwick on Wednesday I wish you uneventful journey back home.

p.s The irony of my username is not lost on me

It's perfectlynormal for someone who has had a nasty fright to panic about something minor. E.g. Saturday we thought MIL was dying but luckily she came through in resus. My lovely, caring SIL was panicking that she hadn't got to the supermarket to get stuff for next week because that was a safe thing to occupy her brain with rather than what could have happened.

You hit the nail on the head. Many, if not most people, when in shock because something is happening that was unexpected, scary, tragic, will pick up on something so trivial that it's silly when one looks back on it. But, it's just a reaction to the shock/trauma and has nothing to do with their ability to empathize, sympathize and see the whole picture when the shock is over. People who seem to think it's fine to bash the OP, or have jumped upon their soapbox, are the ones lacking the basic human skills of empathy and sympathy. Why? Because they are too busy thinking either, "How can I make myself look superior to the poster?" or "How can I use their tragedy to blow my horn?" Both are a bad look.

Sweetashunni · 24/07/2023 13:55

You’ve nicely summarised the point ive tried to make on several threads today.

The time for a slow tapering off of holidays, or a quota, came and went years ago. We are already beyond tipping point. The world cannot afford 1 single unnecessary plane journey more. Everyone seeing themselves as ‘just one person’ is the problem

So, no one is to leave their country for the rest of their life. Are we going to make cows and sheep extinct? How will we handle China? Go in and fix it since they aren't? How will we get there?
What about cruises? They are some of the worst ocean polluters around. So scratch them too.

So, new rule everyone! Stay home, never leave it. Don't drive but don't take public transport. Don't go out to the store but don't have stuff shipped to you either. No more vacations, except for one within walking distance. Grow all your own food (vegan only please) and grow the linen and cotton, build a loom and weave your own clothes. Or don't bother and just go naked in your house. Well, except in winter because you cannot use the heat, or the a/c in the summer. Buy an electric car because it's perfectly okay for the Chinese to be stripping out their mountains to dig for the lithium needed for the batteries and I am sure, sooner or later, when the batteries die, someone will come up with a way to recycle them. You know? Like they did when they told us all that using paper bags was bbbbaaaaaaddddd and everyone needs to use these handy-dandy recyclable plastic bags. We all know how well that has worked out. 🙄

Sweetashunni · 25/07/2023 04:07

Pretty much yeah. The fact you think it’s all ridiculous speaks volumes.

Ouch. Cruise ships do more damage to the ocean than pretty much anything else. They dump their waste a few miles offshore and it's disgusting. Marine mammals/fish etc. eat that crap and we wonder why there are less fish, dying reefs and washed up garbage on beautiful beaches.

I won't cruise becaue I think it's horrid the way the cruise lines treat the oceans. And, if you are being "environmentally friendly", the amount of fuel used on yachts, along with the fuel and oil leaks isn't a real good look.

But then, I find that those that beat the drums the loudest are the ones that are the most destructive. JMHO

Yes, I am sure the cruise ships dumping tons of waste into the ocean every week is SO much better than flying. 🙄

No Nanaof1 you misunderstand. It's absolutely FINE for you to buy a yacht, travel all around the world, including Australia and South America - the further the better really - board a massive polluting cruise liner for 11 weeks (avoids the inclement weather at home) and dump all your waste in the ocean. It's OTHER PEOPLE who are to be berated for even thinking about leaving their zone. Honestly, these plebs not understanding world travel should be left to their "betters", they'll only do it wrong anyway 🙄

Totally agree @Nanaof1, cruise ships are massive polluters - look at how marine life in Venice flourished during Covid with no monster cruise liners able to dock in the lagoon. In the last few weeks alone Amsterdam has announced they will no longer allow cruise ships to dock in the city centre due to fears around pollution and tourist numbers.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-66264226

Referenced in that BBC article is a link to a report which demonstrated that one cruise liner produces as much nitrous oxide in one day as 30,000 trucks!

Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (Cruise Port) in the Eastern Docklands of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam bans cruise ships to limit visitors and curb pollution

It comes months after young British men were urged not to hold bachelor parties in the Dutch capital.

Dang! Thank you for straightening me out on it all. The chest beaters get me so mixed up! Luckily, I have no desire to cruise or I'd need to buy a yacht and I am a bit short this month. 😉🚢🛳

Thank you VERY much for the back-up proof! I watched a program that showed how much was dumped, where it ends up and the dire effect it has on Marine life and birds. I had thought about taking a Disney Cruise and after that program, I swore I would not support such ugliness.

Oh yes cruise ships are dire for the environment. Awful .

So are huge container ships - and every time you buy unnecessary crap from china etc it has travelled here on a huge polluting container ship.

You don't have to weave your own clothes, just buy fewer clothes and when you do, buy good quality and second hand where possible. We don't need a new outfit for every occasion.

Sorry you are in this situation, I hope you get home safe.

Carpedimum · 25/07/2023 09:27

I am glad you and all your family are safe @TooTrusting Your testimony is valuable and I am grateful for it. I used to work in a role that meant we did ‘escape’ training every 6 months; it is drilled into me so I am still vigilant about escape from buildings, but I’ve got complacent in the wider escape an area of danger. It is a good reminder to have a plan, if only to grab passports & water. Safe journey home, and when your insurance comes through, I wish you a lovely calm holiday!

crackofdoom · 25/07/2023 09:48

I think princessofwellies is copping a load of unnecessary shit by using the term "yacht". People unfamiliar with boats immediately jump to thinking that that means the kind of monstrosity that Bernie Ecclestone owns, moored up in Monte Carlo, when in reality she probably means a simple sailing boat. Which is, innately, an eco friendly way to travel, although not within the financial reach of most unless you throw in the towel and live on it full time. (I used to live on a "yacht". I am not a Russian oligarch, it was a 28'6" sailing boat, so pretty much the equivalent of a caravan. Still technically a yacht).

As you were....
