Custard tarts to die for ... the only ones I will ever eat no others come anywhere near as good!

CarolDanvers · 02/03/2019 08:18

Why did they stop doing the Ham and Cheese bake? Do you have any influence to bring it back? It was the best thing Greggs sold and I really miss it Sad. It's just not the same having to heat it up myself from Iceland.

Baconrollandalattee · 02/03/2019 08:42

The ham and cheese bake was before my time so I'm not sure about that. I have no influence at all. If enough people keep on at HQ they might bring it back look at the vegan sausage roll.

The sausage and bean bake was amazing, then they added cheese. :(

Oh- is it only scotland Greggs that sell Scotch Pies ?

Littlebelina · 02/03/2019 08:57

When we were staying in a Ronald McDonald House the local Greggs (and pret) used to donate leftover stock at the end of the day. Used to have a sneaky custard caramel doughnut if one was available after coming back for the night.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 02/03/2019 09:31

Oooh @WithAllIntenseAndPurposes thank you!

golddustwomen · 02/03/2019 09:34

I LOVE the Jammy heart shortbread. I can't walk past a Greggs without getting one. No question but just had to share !

FamilyOfAliens · 02/03/2019 09:42

The tastiest vegetarian product I think is the cheese and onion bake.

Yes! I love them and also buy them from Iceland, which is on the same street as Greggs in my town.

I tried a vegan sausage roll last week and liked the fact that it wasn’t dry, like so many vegan pastry products. But tbh, it tasted a bit too “meaty” for me.

ginghamstarfish · 02/03/2019 09:46

What are the hygiene standards like re food handling/sandwich making? Do you handle money then handle food?

TheClitterati · 02/03/2019 09:48

I've not been into a Greg's since they refused to butter a scone for me. Very foolish as server was standing next to giant tub of "butter", but she was apparently forbidden to butter a scone.

Is this nonsense policy now over.?

GreenWingers · 02/03/2019 09:51

How often is your shop vandalised by hordes of angry Mumsnetters whose DC have somehow been fed a Gregg's sausage roll? It must have happened at least once.

Baconrollandalattee · 02/03/2019 10:09

The hygiene standards are really good. The sandwiches are made out the back by a sandwich maker who's only job is making sandwiches. They don't serve until after sandwich production has finished. If someone goes out to make sandwiches for a customer request they will wash their hands and sanitise the bench before they start. No food is handled by the people handling money. We use tongs to pick up cakes and pasties and tissue to hold the breakfast roll, baguette. We are constantly washing our hands.

We don't sell scones in ours but if someone asks for something like that and we can do it then we will.

I've never had a hourde of angry mumsnetters.

Sounds like you’ve bitten off your scone to spite your bake Grin

I'm surprisingly touched by this. I know it's their waste and they either pay to bin it or are under increasing pressure to donate it to charity, but this type of charity sends unusual and I can imagine just slightly brightens somebody's day at a very difficult time. Smile

Littlebelina · 02/03/2019 16:05

It did Chakira. It wasn't a great time but like you said it was a little thing that helped a bit. When my eldest came to stay at weekends he looked forward to going to see what goodies had been dropped off. Big companies often get a bad rep but in the end are run by individuals who largely want to help

ASurfeitOfDuncans · 02/03/2019 16:11

I would love to work in Gregg's.

Bowchicawowow · 02/03/2019 16:20

I really like the vegan sausage rolls.

I also love the ham and egg salads. They are really simple and old fashioned. Are they popular?

Baconrollandalattee · 02/03/2019 19:26

We hardly sell any salads even in summer but the ham and egg is the best seller. I agree it's really nice.

You used to do a ham roll years ago. It was blooming amazing. I presume stuff gets discontinued as not enough folk buy it? Also why can you only buy some cakes in Scotland and not in England. There's an iced sponge you can only get in Scotland and you don't have it in England :(

I have to say I LOVED your cheese and onion pasties as a secondary school pupil. We made our pilgrimage to our version of Mecca at every lunchtime !!!

Foodylicious · 02/03/2019 20:40

Sorry if this has been asked already, but what happened to the bacon and cheese savoury??

It was my favourite!

Also, our local Gregg's rocks.
Left overs are donated to our local pay as your feel warehouse and also to our breastfeeding support group Grin

Baconrollandalattee · 02/03/2019 21:09

The bacon and cheese wrap? We still have that. I find it really fascinating that different shops sell different cakes and pasties. It must work.

I really like Greggs but alas I'm doing slimming world is there anything that isn't eleventy billion calories?

shivbo2014 · 04/03/2019 15:05

Whats happened to the Tothenham cakes? They dont taste the same!

CarolDanvers · 04/03/2019 15:10

My kids said that about the Tottenham cakes. They won’t eat them anymore.

kaitlinktm · 04/03/2019 15:19

My DS was disappointed when they stopped making the Mexican Chicken baguette - I know they still do the ovals, but they are too small. Would they make me a MC baguette if I asked or would it not be allowed?
