Yes they were in shorts but they looked a bit see through because they were white. It wasn’t hot though so people going shopping in the supermarket were fully dressed.

Do you take your kids to the park/out for lunch/cinema/Farm? Or do they mostly just play together outside the caravan?

MrsSnootyPants2018 · 11/07/2018 12:48

Hello.

I'd like to ask where the sense of entitlement comes from?

I live in the SE and we've currently been experiencing a high number of travellers moving on to our local sports fields and clubs.

Every time, local business have had trouble with the travellers just taking what they want and demanding them to open outside of normal hours. Is this normal?

Also, why when travellers pitch up near children's facilities do they get wrecked and "outsiders" made to feel uncomfortable when they are for their use also.

ChoudeBruxelles · 11/07/2018 12:50

Do lots of travellers still own horses? What do you do with them when you travel if you don't have a horse lorry?

when we are on permanent sites that isnt travelling - that is our home yes they have facillities at home showers/water/toilets but in a car park/field sometimes a tab to fill your water gallons and a portaloo is all we have...

Can you answer for this? Why did these men do this? Can you explain why I was raped by a man? Why do men cat call in the street and think they can grope women? Why do they groom children for sex abuse? Why do your people do these things? You have to understand how I’ve been affected by these things. And not just me but billions of women and children throughout history. Please answer and do something about it. These are your people.

Hello,
I have lived in several parts of England, but it is only in the south east that I have seen so much prejudice against travellers. Have you noticed this too? Do you have any idea why this is?

TakeABreak2 · 11/07/2018 12:55

choude
a few still have horses if they cant bring them travelling they will hire 1 or 2 men to look after them but will nearly always bring them if they dont have a horse box some one the know will lend them one or help them out in somee way

OP - thanks for this thread. It's been very interesting and I appreciate your candour. I think what's hard for me is that a lot of things your'e talking about are just things I can't understand or think are wrong - the attitude to girls and sex, the attitude to education in particular stand out. I totally understand why you don't really want to use your own toilets, but expecting to always be able to use public bathrooms seems odd to me. What about showering/ washing?

Windbeneathmybingowings · 11/07/2018 13:07

She’s answered that, they bathe under a water bottle in the open and I’ve seen baby’s washed in sinks at restaurant toilets.

It just seems so hard and unnecessary, why do people put themselves through all that? Do you personally enjoy travelling or would you prefer to stay at the permanent site? How do you even make up a baby’s bottle with no water and limited electricity.

Mammysin · 11/07/2018 13:18

I'm Irish and had considered doing an MA on Travellers. Tomás MacGréil has written extensively about Irish Traveller origins for anyone interested . Do you use cant Op? Why isn't divorce considered an option for Travellers?

SubtitlesOn · 11/07/2018 13:20

If a girl from the smith family marries a boy from Jones family then does she travel just with the Jones family or does she continue to travel with smith family

If she just travels with Jones then how often does she meet up with smiths, her parents etc

If your DD or DS wanted to marry into one of the Murphy family and they as a family were thought of as being bad what could you do to stop her/him?

SubtitlesOn · 11/07/2018 13:22

Would it be different if it was a DS or DD who wanted to marry the bad Murphy family?

ElinorCadwaller · 11/07/2018 13:27

Thanks for the thread OP, I've bumped into a few travellers over the years without much to say about them really. I have a few questions if you doing mind.

Do you think of yourself as living in the countryside? Does anyone hunt (rabbits etc)?

What kinds of medicine do you use? I ask because a traveler woman once tried to sell me a herbal charm but I thought that might just be for the tourists!

You mentioned Spanish dress-what is that?

At the site near us everyone bleached all their cups every 3 days-is that common? I started bleaching mine every so often afterwards, it really works!

Thanks Smile

DieAntword · 11/07/2018 13:27

You said you don't really make use of the law/police. If a traveller family steals from another traveller family (or something similar), how do they deal with it? Do you have courts and things? What if one family says the other stole but the other one insists it isn't true?

esk1mo · 11/07/2018 13:29

@MNHQ can you do something about the racist and prejudice comments from some posters?

ElinorCadwaller · 11/07/2018 13:33

esk1mo It's grim but I think everyone needs to see it tbh

TakeABreak2 · 11/07/2018 13:39

blingloving - it is our culture and most people think things thatbare different to them are weird
showering they will either drive back home if not to far or go to a leusire centre and pay for a swim to use the showers or in services

I used to think everyone bleached their cups until I saw loads of horrified comments about travellers doing it on a tv show on social media. I couldn’t believe the outrage Grin
