2. Best budget photo frame: IKEA RIBBA Frame

Price: from £5 | Buy now from IKEA

"came on to say IKEA. We have the black Ribba frames in all different sizes and they look great" - tried and tested by Mumsnet user, TreacherousPissFlap

Ikea gets plenty of mentions on the Mumsnet forums when it comes to photo frames. And the RIBBA frame is highly recommended as a cheap and cheerful buy. It comes in black or white and can be used with or without a mount for picture-perfect prints. Since there are so many sizes available, it would work well if you're looking to put together a gallery wall to feature different sized photos.

3. Best digital photo frame: Nixplay 10.1-inch Smart Digital Photo Frame with WIFI

Price: £128 | Buy now from Amazon

"DH bought me one for Xmas. Love it - was poised to stop using digital camera as photos just ended up on computer. DH just downloaded about 10 phots and they rotate. Ours comes on at 3 and goes off at 11pm" - verified by Mumsnet user, Budababe

"I think it's a good gift idea - especially for non-technical members of the family." - recommended by Mumsnet user, MajesticWhine

“We bought my MIL a Nixplay. It's brilliant - all her family have the email address and we send out photos direct to the screen whenever we want. This way it is always being updated. She has it on random so it scrolls through all the photos. It's very simple and I highly recommend it.” - tried and tested by Mumsnet user, Ojoj1974

Digital frames divide opinion on Mumsnet. Some think that a classic photograph is best and that rotating snaps are a little naff. However, you can't beat a digital option in terms of making the most of your family memories and sharing hundreds of snaps that would otherwise take up every inch of your wall space. If you're considering buying one, the Nixplay frame is highly rated by the Mumsnet community. With built-in Wi-Fi, you can send photos to a loved one’s living room via the Nixplay app, Google Photos, Facebook or Instagram. Fear not, it’s a user-friendly device, and you can get a wood effect version for an extra £7, which more closely resembles a standard photo frame. You can either use this digital frame as a desktop or a wall-mounted picture frame in a portrait or a landscape orientation. It would make a great wedding gift or a new home present for anyone already sold on the concept.

Our nearly-poster size prints, plus nice black frame and white mount came in at under £40 and the quality is great. Could not recommend enough" - recommended by Mumsnet user, burcham12

Their customisation features are pretty endless, they're reasonably priced, and they have a solid reputation. What picture frames are in style now?

Copper frames are very much on trend at the moment and bring together a modern and industrial vibe. Minimalist black and white frames are timeless choices that are always going to be popular, as they go with everything, as are rustic, wooden frames. Gold and silver offer a more decorative finish, so it’s important to choose a style that best suits your decor and that complements your favoured shots instead of overwhelming them.

How do you determine your frame size?

Once you have the measurements of your photo (6 x 4 and 7 x 5 inches are popular sizes,) you’ll be able to pick your desired frame. It’s important to take into account borders and mounts you might want, which will increase the size of the overall frame you buy. If you already have the desired photo frame and are unsure of its measurements, always measure from the inside not outside. Many frames are custom-made so you can simply provide your print size and the right frame size will be based on these measurements for the perfect fit. The size of the picture frame will always be determined by the photo and not the frame. If you're looking for help hanging a picture, this guide is pretty useful, as is this guide on how to measure up.

Are digital photo frames worth it?

Digital photo frames can make a great gift for someone who has all their photo memories on their phone and are unlikely to get them printed. It’s nice to be able to see those captured moments around the home and not just during a photo scroll. They tend to have built in WI-FI and many offer unlimited storage and apps that allow you to add photos remotely. They're more expensive than the average frame of course, but can rotate hundreds of photos at once. They aren’t everyone’s cup of tea though and you don’t get the same aesthetic you would from a traditional frame. They’re fun but are unlikely to be used after the initial novelty has worn off. A photo frame is always there and has the edge in terms of appeal for us.

What’s the best photo frame to buy?

The Heal’s Simple Photo Frame Copper is our overall winner because it has a lot going for it. It’s simple, well-made, comes in a variety of sizes, and you can choose between buying individual pieces or a set. Whatever your home decor, this minimalist frame is going to complement the space in which it appears.

How we chose our recommendations

We spent several hours sifting through Mumsnet's forums for recommendations from our users on photo frames they rated most highly. We were also on the lookout for poor reviews of products to avoid.

We also consulted recommendations from experts, consumer websites and print media and made sure we included brands that regularly appeared in top 10 lists.

We then looked at reviews for each of our longlisted photo frames to check that previous customers were satisfied with their purchases. By doing this, we whittled our longlist down and chose a top list that we think offers something for everybody.
