What Mumsnet users say

Our verdict

In short: A firm, supportive memory foam pillow that works especially well for side sleepers and people who want consistent neck support. If you prefer a soft, squashy or adjustable pillow, this won’t be for you.

Full verdict: Panda’s bamboo memory foam pillow has sat on bestseller lists for years and is often recommended to people with neck pain or anyone who prefers a firmer feel than a feather pillow. To see how it performs over time, we asked Sam to test it long term.

Sam lives with chronic illness and spends more time in bed than most people, which makes her a tough but fair tester. Comfort, support, heat control and durability matter more to her than novelty or first impressions.

She’s also unapologetically fussy about pillows. This review reflects day-to-day use rather than the initial excitement many pillows enjoy in their first week.

Below we’re walking through the same criteria we use for all pillow reviews so you can compare this directly with other options on the market.

How we tested the Panda Memory Foam Bamboo Pillow

We asked Sam to use the Panda Bamboo Memory Foam Pillow as her main pillow over an extended period, rather than a short trial. She used it every night and during the day for sitting up, resting, reading and scrolling.

This helped us assess how well it copes with real life, including long hours in bed, position changes and repeated use. She tracked comfort, support, pressure relief, heat retention and how well the pillow held its shape.

She also checked the practical details that matter once the marketing wears off, such as cover removal, spot cleaning, zip comfort and whether pillowcases stay put.

How well does the Panda Memory Foam Bamboo pillow perform?

Panda describes this as a firm but contouring memory foam pillow designed to offer consistent support. Sam was sceptical at first because it’s a simple block shape rather than one of the newer sculpted designs.

That hesitation didn’t last. She says, “I sleep deeply on it and don’t wake up feeling cricked in my neck or any more stiff in my back than I usually do.”

The foam feels high for a few seconds before her head sinks in and settles. Once it does, support stays consistent. “I roll over and it’s good to go,” she says and the pillow resets fully every time she gets up.

Crucially, it hasn’t compressed or shifted during the night. “With other pillows I’ve found the stuffing gets scrumpled towards the back… Not with this pillow.”

The only reason it didn’t score full marks is that brief moment of firmness before it moulds. She forgets about it within seconds and sleeps well every night.

Is Panda’s memory foam pillow good quality?

Memory foam pillows vary wildly in quality, especially at this price point. Sam was impressed with how well made this one feels. “Impressively well made. The cover is stitched well… and the memory foam is sound.”

The outer cover is soft but not slippery, which helps keep pillowcases in place. She’s never noticed the zip while sleeping and the cover adds structure to the pillow. “With the cover on, the whole pillow becomes a lot firmer.”

She’s had to spot clean it after spills and night sweats and everything has cleaned up easily, with no lingering marks or smells. Based on her experience so far, she expects it to last for years rather than months.

How easy is it to use the pillow?

Memory foam pillows often arrive tightly rolled with a bit of a chemical whiff and the Panda pillow fits that pattern. Sam wasn’t bothered by it but still gave it time to settle. As she puts it, “I left it for a day to plump up and get rid of the smell and it has been fine since. I think if I was smell-sensitive, I’d want longer.” After that initial airing, she didn’t notice it again.

She had no trouble understanding how to look after it. “They are very clear,” she says of the care instructions and offered to send a picture because they were that straightforward.

Cover removal and replacement can be the downfall of some memory foam pillows, particularly when the foam grabs the fabric. Not here. Sam tested this while reviewing it: “I’ve just tried this. It’s actually fine to get it off and back on again.” She also noted that she could wash the cover if needed to see whether it changes shape.

One of the reasons it’s easy is the design itself. “I think the cover of the memory foam and the inside of the cover being really synthetic make it easy to get the cover on and off. There’s no wrestling with it like some other memory foam pillows.”

That outer texture also helps keep a pillowcase in place, which is something she appreciates. “I think the texture of the outside of the cover helps a pillowcase sit on it and stay in place, if that makes sense.”

In day-to-day use it’s a simple pillow to live with. It fits neatly into standard pillowcases without slipping around and it still works whether she’s lying down or propped up.

Adjustment-wise, it behaves exactly like any solid memory foam block. There’s no height or firmness tweaking and as Sam summarised earlier: “As mentioned”, you can position it easily but you can’t change its structure. If you prefer a pillow you can shape or plump, you’d be better off with shredded foam or microfibre. But for people who like a firm, reliable block that behaves the same every night, Panda is about as low-fuss as it gets.

Is the Panda Memory Foam Bamboo Pillow good value for money?

Because Sam spends so much time in bed, she has a clear sense of what feels worth paying for. For her, the Panda pillow makes sense as a long-term investment rather than something she expects to replace every couple of years.

“I’m someone who spends a lot of time in bed (chronic illness being the main reason, sleep, pain relief and good rest being important for me) and I am fortunate enough that yes, I would spend this amount on this pillow.

“I don’t think I’d have to replace it within ten years and I’m more likely to soil it with my sweaty head than for it to stop working.”

She likes that the removable cover adds to the pillow’s lifespan too, saying “The removable cover and the construction of the cover also build in extra time I could have it for.”

She does still need other pillows for sitting up, but she points out that if she’s not crushing them by sleeping on them, “the whole set-up will last longer.”

Against similar products, the Panda pillow holds its own. “So far so good. Ticks all the boxes. Hopefully I won’t saturate it with horrible stale sweat. Summer will be the true test.” She also expects more longevity from a branded pillow. “Because this is a branded one, I’d want it to last longer than two years. Terrible for landfill really.”

As for whether the features earn the price tag, she’s pretty clear: “Yeah, pretty comparable, if not a bit cheaper, than other things on the market.” That said, she’s realistic about the economics of the sleep industry. “I mean, the mark-up must be enormous, but we are where we are with pillow prices and the premium on decent sleep.”

How comfortable is the Panda Memory Foam Bamboo Pillow?

Sam sleeps on her side and the Panda pillow suits her well once she’s settled into it. “I’m a side sleeper and yes, it’s just right once I’ve sunk into it.” That initial sinking is part of the appeal. Once the memory foam cradles her head, the alignment feels natural.

She deals with a trapped nerve that can leave her with numb fingers if she’s too scrunched up, so support really matters. “I’ve got a bit of a trapped nerve in my shoulder and I can get numb fingers if I get too scrunched. I’ve woken up feeling ok using this pillow.”

Loft consistency is a non-negotiable for many sleepers. On that front she simply says, “Yes,” meaning it keeps its height and doesn’t collapse during the night.

The cover is another factor. She describes it as having “a sort of microfibre feel to it without it doing that horrible thing where it sticks to your hand if you brush it the wrong way.” It’s not a texture she’d want against her bare face though. “Personally, I would never use it without a pillowcase as that’s not the texture I’m after against my cheek.” Still, she thinks it grips a pillowcase well and even jokes that “I think it would be good for cleaning your glasses on.”

Does the pillow regulate temperature well?

Heat control is often the sticking point with memory foam. Sam still gets warm at night but makes an important distinction. “I have still gotten sweaty and I have woken up with damp hair, but I’ve never woken up feeling hot. If that makes sense.” The outside of the cover feels like it could be cosy if you slept directly on it, though she hasn’t tried that. “The texture of the cover makes me think it would be cosy if I slept directly on it, but I’ve no evidence to back that up.”

She’s used gel cooling pillows before, so she knows what true cold-on-contact feels like. “I’ve used one of those gel cooling covers in the past and whilst this pillow isn’t lovely and cold like those are to first lie on, it is more of a constant temperature throughout the night.” When she’s dealing with migraines, the steady temperature and the ability to shift to a cooler patch easily is helpful. “Easy to move and find a cooler spot if you have a migraine.”

Compared with other pillows for heat retention, she’s cautiously positive. “I guess good, as there are no sweat marks in it. Would need to try in summer.” She’s also noticed that it doesn’t stay warm after she gets up. “I could get up and come back to bed and the pillow would be an ambient temperature where I was lying. So I suppose it doesn’t retain heat.”

She’s honest about not entirely trusting the bamboo marketing. “Perhaps not noticing is the proof of the pudding, but I don’t fully understand, with all the polyester and synthetic materials in the construction, how the bit of bamboo it has in it would actually work. Or if it’s just marketing and the word bamboo is doing most of the work of me not noticing I’m sleeping on a foam block and heating it up with my head.”

Like many of us, she sometimes flips her pillow just for the joy of it. “Only as a little treat and because it’s one of life’s greatest pleasures. However, it is cooler on the outside.”

Does the Panda Memory Foam Bamboo Pillow retain its shape?

The Panda pillow is a solid block of memory foam, so the key question is whether it holds its shape and whether it gives you any control over how it sits. Sam has been testing it long enough to know if it starts to sag and she’s clear on this. “I’m mid-fat on the fat spectrum and yes, it does for the time I’ve had it.” In other words, the loft stays put even under pressure.

It also recovers straight away when she moves. When asked how quickly it springs back, she simply said, “Instantly.” That instant rebound is a big part of why memory foam lovers stay loyal to it.

Adjustability is where this pillow doesn’t pretend to offer anything it can’t. You can’t scrunch it, fold it or reshape it. Sam sums it up perfectly: “No. It’s a block and it moulds to you. You have no agency over the pillow.” That lack of control will either be a deal-breaker or exactly what you want, depending on your preference.

As for flattening, there’s been none at all. “No,” she said, when asked whether it had compressed during testing. For a foam pillow, especially with daily use, that’s reassuring.

Is the Panda Memory Foam Bamboo Pillow hypoallergenic?

Panda promotes the pillow as hypoallergenic but Sam didn’t go into the test expecting dramatic allergy relief. “I haven’t noticed anything as I wasn’t really aware of it. I do suffer from allergies and the pillow itself has never been an issue.” So while it hasn’t solved her allergies, it also hasn’t triggered them, which is as important for sensitive sleepers.

The cover is easy to remove and she’s happy enough with the process even if she hasn’t run it through the wash yet. “Easy to remove. Happy to wash it. Please don’t judge me for not yet. I’m a firm believer that a cover on a cover means you only wash the top cover on the regular.” That will ring true for many people.

When asked about washing performance, she responded with an honest, “Sorry,” because she hasn’t washed it yet. Spot cleaning has been fine, though, as mentioned in earlier sections.

She couldn’t find any official allergy-friendly certifications either. “I had not noticed any and having checked, it doesn’t seem to have them.” That won’t matter to everyone but those who rely on certification schemes may want to note it.

Finally, she’s had no reactions to the pillow at all. “No. If I were more smell-sensitive then I may have needed longer to get the new smell off it.” Once the initial off-gassing disappeared, it caused her no bother.

Final verdict of the Panda Memory Foam Bamboo Pillow

The Panda Bamboo Memory Foam Pillow is a no-nonsense option for people who want firm, reliable support night after night. It’s particularly well suited to side sleepers and anyone who values consistency over adjustability.

It isn’t perfect. It can feel firm at first, it may run warm for some sleepers and there’s no way to tweak the height or feel. But for Sam, it’s been comfortable, supportive and durable enough to earn a long-term place on her bed.
