How we tested

Our resident ironing expert Alison tested the Polti La Vaporella XT90C Steam Generator Iron over the course of two months in her five-bedroom home. Taking detailed notes on the iron's user-friendliness, effectiveness against creases, she compared its performance to the best steam irons and other steam generators she's tested. Alison put the iron pitted the Polti against regular everyday ironing, as well as keeping on top of bedding for her Airbnb guests.

Polti La Vaporella XT90C Steam Generator Iron: our verdict

Produced by the inventors of the steam generator iron, the Polti La Vaporella XT90C has a pleasing, almost retro look compared to other steam generator irons. I particularly like the cork handle grip, which is both comfortable to hold and a nice design element.

But enough about how it looks, how does it perform? Impressively, it turns out. The Vaporella heats up in just over a minute (much more quickly than other steam generator irons I've tried), and makes ironing easy. Handling was smooth and you can feel how good a job its doing.

With a turbo function for heavy creases and upright steaming, it made light work of all the fabrics I tested it on. Switching the iron into upright mode, I used it to release some creases from my curtains and freshen them up - it made them look better, although it didn't eliminate all the creases.

However, there are a couple of small design quirks that I felt could do with changing. Firstly, the power cord and the water tank outlet are on the same side, which could cause safety issues and just makes things that bit awkward when filling and emptying the water tank. Secondly, the water tank is not removable. I've tested a lot of irons and a removable water tank makes such a difference to how easy it is to fill and empty.

On the whole, the Polti La Vaporella is a very good iron and gives more expensive steam generators - like the Tefal Pro Express Vision - a run for their money.

What's the Polti La Vaporella XT90C Steam Generator Iron like to use day-to-day?

I tested the Polti La Vaporella on tablecloths, bed linen, cotton t-shirts and curtains. It performed very well against every fabric, gliding through creases with ease. With an impressive 450g steam shot in 'turbo mode', it produces plenty of steam to power through any ironing challenge.

The iron is comfortable to hold and manoeuvres fluidly. It has a unique rounded soleplate, making it even easier to swish around the ironing board, getting into every corner and flattening out hems.

When it's time to fill or empty the water tank, I'd prefer for it to be removable. The water outlet is on the same side as the power cord too, which safety-wise leaves a lot to be desired.

Does the Polti La Vaporella XT90C Steam Generator Iron offer good value for money?

At £320, this is a pricy iron, but not the priciest by any means. The Philips PerfectCare Elite, for example, retails for a similar price, but it has the edge over the Polti thanks to its removable water tank.

La Vaporella can hold its own against more expensive models like the Tefal Pro Express Vision, and it'll give you the gliding, easy ironing that make steam generator irons so popular on Mumsnet.
