Munchkin Float Highchair review: "A good design at an affordable price"

With its foldable functionality and easy-clean surfaces, the Munchkin Float Highchair is designed to slot effortlessly into busy family life. Mumsnet editor Tina extensively tested it out over several months with a weaning baby and two older babies to find out how well it does just that.

Overall rating:
What we like
  • Looks good

  • Reassuring and easy-to-use five-point harness which unclips at the touch of a button

  • Foldable design means it can be stored easily. It is also freestanding once folded which is useful

  • Light at under five kilos and easy to manouevre

  • Well-made and sturdy

What we don't like
  • Food gets stuck easily in the crevice of the buckle

  • While foldable, the Float requires two hands to unfold which we feel makes the folding functionality a lot less useful than it could be

  • Not as adjustable as other highchairs and has a shorter usability lifespan

How we tested the Munchkin Float Highchair

I tested the Munchkin Float over three months while weaning my son (then aged six to nine-months-old). We also tested it with two older babies (age 10 months and one year) to get a feel for how well it would work for us in the future.

Does the Munchkin Float require assembly?

This highchair came in one box and didn’t require any tools to assemble, we had it ready to go in less than 10 minutes.

How is the Munchkin Float to use day-to-day?

The Float is a lovely looking highchair. The moulded plastic seat and tray are complimented by the wooded legs and it feels like a nice piece of furniture in our dining room

Straps

The most common accident to happen in a highchair isn’t choking, it’s actually falling out of the highchair, so it’s really important to consider what kind of safety harness a chair has before investing.

The Munchkin highchair has a five-point harness made from grey fabric which is really easy to adjust. Getting our son in and out of the chair was pretty simple once we realised we could pull the straps to the side of the chair before seating him in it.

You can clip one side of the buckle in at a time which is super helpful when wrangling a baby, but the harness unclips with the touch of one button, a thoughtful design and great safety feature.  It was nice to know that if DS was choking and I did need to get him out of the chair quickly, he could be unstrapped within a matter of seconds.

One small bug bear about the clips though is that food can very easily get trapped in the crevices of the buckle and it’s quite hard to get it out once it’s in there. It’s clear to see the rest of the seat was very much designed to make it easy to clean so it’s a shame that the buckle was overlooked in this aspect.

How well does the folding feature perform?

I love that the Float can be folded away allowing for slightly more floor space in our dining room.

When folded, the chair is still freestanding meaning you can store it anywhere. The tray can remain in place or you can tuck it away in the back legs. It was handy to be able to fold the chair when cleaning the floor.

However, the chair needs two hands to be unfolded which I think is a huge oversight and it makes the folding functionality a lot less useful than it should be. I’ve tried on several occasions to master unfolding this chair whilst holding a baby and it just doesn’t work, it’s a real shame because it means that it’s not practical to store this highchair folded if you're using it everyday. But nevertheless, I do find it useful for cleaning the floor and the occasional times when we’ve wanted to de-baby the dining room for guests, it’s much easier to pack away than the IKEA Antilop.

How is the tray of the Munchkin Float?

Munchkin Float highchair tray

The Float comes with a decent-sized detachable tray giving babies the opportunity to eat independently from the very beginning of their weaning journey. It slides off very easily and cleans well. It’s not dishwasher safe, but that wasn’t a deal breaker for us.

How portable is the Munchkin Float?

Weighing just under five kilos, it’s very easy to move this highchair around if you need to, especially if you’re able to fold it first.

How easy is the Munchkin Float to keep clean?

Most days I leave the tray attached to the highchair when cleaning it, but it’s very easy to remove for a deep clean when required.

The moulded plastic seat and removable tray make it very easy to clean and after three months of testing and more than one night of spaghetti bolognese I’m pleased that the chair is still stain free.

A cloth and hot soapy water has all that's been required to get this chair spick and span, what’s nice is that even a quick wipe with a cloth after mealtimes will usually do the trick, apart from the aforementioned buckles which trap food at every opportunity. We got around this by putting our son's bib on over the buckles, but that does mean it would take a little longer to get him out of the chair if he was choking.

Is the highchair adjustable?

There’s not a huge amount of customising you can do to this chair, but enough to find a comfortable seat for babies and toddlers. The straps are easy to loosen and the foot rest can be used in two positions to allow for some flexibility.

What's the longevity like for this highchair?

The chair has a weight limit of 15kg, so roughly three years old. I think this really depends on your child. Taller or bigger children may grow out of it more quickly.

What are the Munchkin Float's standout features?

The moulded plastic seat is really comfortable and easy to clean and the folding functionality makes it easier to move around the house when required.

Would you recommend the Munchkin Float to others?

If you’re short on space I don’t think the Munchkin float is a good solution for weaning, it may be better to look at a travel highchair like the Chicco Pocket snack.

Munchkin Float highchair in testing

While it’s not quite as sturdy or stylish as the UPPAbaby Ciro, it’s very similar and costs significantly less. And even though the footrest isn’t as adjustable, the folding mechanism is handy to have. If you’re on a budget nothing can beat the Antilop but if you’re looking for something a bit more stylish without blowing the budget the Munchkin Float could be a really good option.

What would you change about the Munchkin Float?

I’d like the straps to  be slightly easier to clean and I’d like the chair to fold and unfold with one hand.

Overall verdict:

Overall, the Munchkin Float is a lovely looking highchair with a lot of useful features. It's not a budget highchair but it's well made and could easily last for more than one child. While I'd like the straps to be slightly easier to clean and I'd prefer the folding functionality to be one handed, I think the Float represents good design at an affordable price.
