How we tested

Our reviewer Anna put the electriQ 20L Low-Energy Smart Wifi Laundry Dehumidifier to the test in her home against full loads of laundry straight from her washing machine. Setting the dehumidifier up in a spare bedroom with a standard airer, she took detailed notes on user-friendliness, efficiency, effectiveness and noise levels.

How easy is the electriQ 20L Low-Energy Smart Wifi Laundry Dehumidifier to set up and start using?

The dehumidifier was very straightforward to set up. It has a sturdy handle and hidden wheels, so although it was quite heavy, it was easy to move into position in my spare room where I dry laundry. We don't have a tumble dryer and I've always used a standard clothes airer to dry clothes indoors, so I was interested to see whether it made a difference to how quickly my laundry dried.

Once it was in place, I just needed to lift the vent and switch the dehumidifier on. It has a "humidistat" so it only runs when humidity is above a certain level. It was easy to adjust this - the control panel is quite intuitive - and switch between the different modes.

The dehumidifier comes with an app, which makes it easy to set schedules and monitoring the humidity remotely, but I didn't find myself using it. I really like the set and forget nature of the dehumidifier, so didn't feel the need for any of the extra features.

Is the electriQ 20L Low-Energy Smart Wifi Laundry Dehumidifier effective at drying laundry?

Yes, very. Set up in a relatively small, but not tiny, spare bedroom with the door and window closed, I was really impressed by how much quicker a load of washing dried.

During the colder months, it's going to make a real difference. It also cleans the air and warms the room up - I wish I'd got one sooner! After relying on air drying clothes without a washer dryer for years when I couldn't hang them on the washing line, the dehumidifier has quickly become a really useful thing to have around.

When the tank is full, it's fairly heavy and awkward to remove and empty, which to be honest is the only drawback I found for this dehumidifier.

Does the electriQ 20L Low-Energy Smart Wifi Laundry Dehumidifier offer good value for money?

At £190, the electriQ 20l Low-Energy Smart WiFi Laundry Dehumidifier is about average for a high quality, large capacity dehumidifier - the difference is that it's designed with laundry in mind. It's powerful and effective at speeding up laundry drying time, and is hundreds of pounds cheaper than a similarly energy-efficient budget tumble dryer.

Costing just 5.5p per hour to run, it can dry a load of laundry for just 22p, so it won't make a huge dent on your energy bills.

It's also worth mentioning the smart technology included in the dehumidifier. While I didn't use the app, the clever humidity sensors mean it shuts off when it senses the washing is dry, which is a real plus.
