How we tested

Our reviewer Tina, head of editorial content at Mumsnet, put the washing machine to the test in her home over the course of 120 washes. Washing clothes for herself, her husband and her newborn baby, she took detailed notes on user-friendliness, efficiency, effectiveness and noise levels. Cross-comparing the Bosch with her previous washing machine, she thoroughly tested each feature against a number of everyday laundry tasks.

What were your first impressions of the washing machine?

As washing machines go the Bosch series six is a sleek looking appliance, while it's still essentially a big white box, the black drum ring and touch screen control panel make it a little more aesthetically pleasing than other models.

Overall the machine feels very well made - what you’d expect for a slightly more premium washing machine. The program selector control knob makes a very satisfying click when it’s turned.  The touch screen control panel is sensitive and easy to wipe clean. The laundry liquid draw is sturdy and pulls out very smoothly. And the drum door opens to a wide angle making it  easy to fill even with bulky items such as duvet covers.

How easy was this washing machine to set up and start using?

It was very easy to set up and once  plumbed in the program selector and signage on the machine is fairly intuitive to use, we didn’t need to look at the instruction manual to understand most of the features. Only the anti-stain symbols caused us to reach for the manual.

How do the wash cycles perform?

We use the mixed load setting the most, it’s a one hour cycle that cleans even fairly grubby clothes well. I like that you can also adjust the spin cycle and water temperature on that setting to customise the wash to your preferences.

There’s a delicate cycle performed well, it runs for 45 minutes as well as a wool wash option

Eco - It’s a longer cycle, 3hr 40 minutes, but uses less water, great when you’re not in a rush.

Hygiene - We used the hygiene wash for sheets and particularly dirty baby clothes, it’s a longer cycle that runs at a warmer temperature, really good for getting stubborn stains out.

Fast -  15, 30 and 45 minute cycle if you’re in a rush

Jeans/Dark wash - great for denim or a mixed colour load

There are several customisations you can make to cycles. It’s not immediately clear which ones apply to which setting but a bit of playing around quickly gave us an idea of how we can personalise our loads.

  • Add to load - This function is absolutely genius, if you’ve started a load of washing only to discover a lonely sock on the stairs, you can simply pause the cycle and chuck it in.

  • Fast - you can shorten most cycles by selecting the fast feature,

  • Delay / finish in - I think a delay start function is an essential feature for any household, this one is slightly different to others I’ve used in that you select when you want the wash to finish (Up to 24 hours). I did my maths wrong once and found the machine on full spin at 6am - thankfully it wasn’t too loud, still a very useful addition.

  • Anti stain - This is a really clever feature that adjusts the wash cycle depending on what type of stain you’re looking to remove. There are four symbols to represent the four most common stains; oil, grass, red wine and blood. Selecting this option adjusts the temperature, drum movement and soaking time to best remove the stains.

  • Child proof - There’s a child proof lock button that can be activated by pressing the two key  buttons for three seconds, this locks the drum even at the end of a cycle and the machine has been switched off. To take off the child lock you just press the same two buttons for three seconds again.

There’s a lot of flexibility and variation in the length of cycles which I’m really happy with. Most of all, it’s great that clothes come out really clean and not too wet in under an hour.

Is the Bosch Series 6 WGG254Z0GB washing machine noisy?

The Bosch Series 6 is Quiet Mark certified and if you have an open plan kitchen diner, it’s an absolute game changer.

It’s my favourite thing about this machine. Even on the fastest spin cycle, you can easily have a conversation over the sound of the drum.

How pleased are you with how the washing machine cleans your clothes?

Yes I’m very pleased with the level of cleanliness, even on a short cycle clothes come out well. Tougher stains - namely baby poo needs more intense clean than the one hour wash, but the hygiene wash coupled with stain remover seems to do the job on even the worst offenders.

Compared to our previous washing machine, which was an older Bosch with a smaller drum, the drum is absolutely massive. It has a 10kg capacity which is more than enough for our family of three and it could easily serve larger families.

There’s a really good variety of cycles and customisations,  the delay start and add to load functionality makes this appliance a real joy to use. The spin is also really effective and means that clothes are quicker to dry.

Bosch WGG254Z0GB 10kg 1400 Spin Washing Machine: our verdict

The best thing about this washing machine is how quiet it is, even at 1400rpm spin cycle you can have a conversion on the phone without struggling to hear. It’s really very impressive.

One thing we'd change is the anti-stain symbols, which are a bit confusing and could be more intuitive.

After four months of almost daily use the laundry liquid holder is beginning to get a bit dirty. It’s not immediately obvious how to remove it for cleaning, but once I had consulted the manual I managed to figure it out.

It’s also important to note than you need to keep the the drum open in between washes to avoid mould from building up inside the rubber ring, and you need to remember to clean inside the rubber ring, like most washing machines I’ve used, it’s easy for hair/tissues/ bits of lego to find their way into this part of the drum and if you don’t wipe it clean regularly it’s likely to get mouldy.

Overall I think this is a great family washing machine, perfect for open plan houses that don’t have the luxury of a utility room. The 10kg drum offers ample space for growing families, the customisations offer a great level of flexibility but most of all it’s a quiet machine that doesn’t take over open plan kitchens.
