Best hard floor cleaners

In a home with kids and four-legged friends, keeping your hard floors clear of dirt, dust, spills and mishaps can feel like an almost impossible task.

Maintaining the high-traffic areas of hard flooring in your home can be really time-consuming, with your efforts barely seeing the light of day before the next cereal spillage. While a quick whizz around with a high-quality floor mop and detergent can restore shine and lift stains, floors often need a sweep or once-over with a vacuum cleaner beforehand to gather up loose debris like mud or biscuit crumbs.

If you don’t fancy spending your entire weekend cleaning (let’s face it, who does?!), a hard floor cleaner can be a sensible investment. Designed specifically for non-carpeted areas, such as wood, tiles, vinyl and laminate, these efficient cleaners can wash, scrub, and often dry your flooring in one quick and easy step.

To bring you our pick of the best hard floor cleaners, we first collated the tried-and-tested verdicts of trusted Mumsnet users, seeking recommendations on the products and brands that made light work of muddy floors and never-ending juice spills. Then, after researching and scrutinising products recommended by industry experts, we carefully analysed authentic consumer reviews to discover the hard floor cleaners that performed well across all budgets.

Finally, where possible, we conducted our own thorough testing of hard floor cleaners - putting the Vax and Bosch models to the test in real homes with children. During testing, we evaluated cleaning performance, ease of use, manoeuvrability and, of course, overall value for money.

Ready to get your floors sparkling clean? We also have guides to the best cordless vacuums and best carpet cleaners.

What we don't like
  • Some reviewers found filling the tank a little fiddly

  • If you’re covering larger areas, you may prefer the more affordable Shark Corded HydroVac (£200)

I've got a Shark HydroVac for our hard floors downstairs. It's absolutely brilliant, we've got two dogs and a tribe of grandkids, but it does the whole of the ground floor and still has loads of battery left. You can also go over the top of rugs with it too, so it saves me washing the floor mats as much. [...]”

Our verdict

Featuring the powerful suction you’d expect from a Shark vacuum, the Cordless HydroVac is ideal for both deep cleaning tasks and everyday top-ups. A three-in-one multi-surface cleaner that vacuums, mops and cleans itself, it makes light work of wet and dry messes, such as spilt drinks, muddy paw prints, and your child’s regularly scattered Coco Pops. Lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, it can power across your sealed hard floors (and rugs) to remove even stubborn, sticky marks from tiles or wood.

We love the antimicrobial brush roll, preventing the buildup of unwelcome odours or bacteria. While some reviewers found it a little fiddly to fill, the impressive two-part water tank automatically separates the clean and dirty water.

When you’re finished, simply pop the HydroVac back on the charging station and activate self-cleaning mode. You can expect a generous 25-minute runtime on this model; however, if you’re cleaning larger areas, you may prefer the slightly heavier corded HydroVac design.

The Beldray All-in-One Multi-Surface Floor Cleaner is a budget-friendly hard floor cleaner that vacuums, mops and dries in one go, making it a fuss-free option for busy family homes. At £135, it’s significantly cheaper than rivals but still delivers strong everyday cleaning on wood, vinyl and tiles. It handles muddy footprints and sticky spills well, leaving floors almost dry within seconds, though tougher, ground-in dirt may need extra passes. Lightweight, cordless and easy to assemble, it also features a handy self-cleaning function. While runtime (25 minutes) and swivel flexibility are limited, it offers excellent value for straightforward weekly floor cleaning.

Our verdict

Tested by Mumsnet editor Rachel Erdos: Read our full Vax Glide 2 Hard Floor Cleaner review

Suitable for sealed wood floors, tiles and laminate, the Vax Glide performed well in our tests, with Mumsnet editor Rachel describing it as "a game-changing, time-saving (and no longer back-breaking) way to keep things clean at home." Consider us sold.

After sucking up loose debris, the powerful brush roller releases a cleaning solution to tackle both fresh and dried-on spills. This smart appliance also offers impressive drying performance, removing excess liquid from the surface so you can walk across your floors in no time.

While it's bulky and heavy when compared to a traditional floor mop, Rachel found the Vax Glide really simple to use, even encouraging her to clean her floors more regularly. She found the full-width brush roller easy to manoeuvre into corners and right up to the skirting boards, with the LED headlights ensuring no dirt or grime was left behind.

With a 20-minute battery life, this cordless design provides sufficient run time to navigate multiple rooms - though it’s not the best for battery life (the Shark, for example, runs for 25 minutes). However, we love how the interchangeable battery can be used across all Vax floor cleaning products, so you can easily switch to another when it's time to recharge.

4

Best premium hard floor cleaner

What we like
  • Lightweight and easy to store

  • High capacity

  • Long battery life

  • Suitable for wet and dry spills

  • Self-cleaning on the docking station

What we don't like
  • Costly

  • Some users had issues using it on uneven floors

Key specs

Price on writing: £360 | Type: Cordless hard floor cleaner | Capacity: 0.8 litre | Weight: 4.9kg | Battery life: Up to 35 minutes

Our verdict

While it certainly doesn’t come cheap, this high-capacity cordless Dyson provides complete freedom to clean around your home without restriction, offering up to an impressive 35 minutes of battery life per charge. Suitable for both wet and dry spills across various hard floor types, including tiles, vinyl, laminate and sealed wood, it conveniently separates wet and dry waste for safe and hygienic disposal.

The WashG1’s lightweight and sleek design is easy to manoeuvre on flat floors, though some users did report issues when using it on uneven surfaces - which is disappointing at this price point.

On a brighter note, we love that there's a choice of modes available, which tailor the suction to the level of dirtiness on your floors. The ‘max’ mode is most beneficial when tackling hard-to-remove stains, such as spilt sauces and toothpaste, but bear in mind it will drain the battery quicker.

While this hard floor cleaner self-cleans on the included docking station, Dyson does recommend regular manual maintenance to keep it running at its best.

5

Best non-toxic hard floor cleaner

What we like
  • Very effective non-toxic cleaner

  • Tackles wet and dry debris without vacuuming

  • Easy to manoeuvre + excellent swivel head

  • Self-cleaning tech plus a hot air mop dryer

What we don't like
  • Pricey!

  • Works best when used slowly

  • Drying cycle takes 30 minutes and is loud

  • Not an essential buy for most households

Key specs

Price on writing: £300 | Type: Cordless hard floor cleaner | Capacity: 0.75 litres | Weight: 3.8kg | Battery life: Up to 45 minutes | Power: 350W

Tested by Mumsnet editor Rachel Erdos: Read our full Dyson Clean+Wash Hygiene hard floor cleaner review

If you want a powerful clean without relying on chemicals, the Dyson Clean+Wash Hygiene stands out. It uses just water yet still lifts both wet and dry mess in a single slow pass, leaving floors streak-free and dry within minutes. The hygienic design keeps dirt contained in the floor head, avoiding the sludge and smells that can build up in other machines. It’s easy to manoeuvre and genuinely satisfying to use, but at £430, it’s a premium buy. Brilliant if you want top-tier performance and a more hygienic clean, but probably not essential for every home.

Bosch Unlimited 7 Aqua Cordless Vacuum Cleaner and Mop

What we like
  • Vacuums and mops in one appliance

  • It can also be used as a handheld

  • Super lightweight design

What we don't like
  • Costly

  • Battery life reduces significantly in turbo mode

Our verdict

Tested by Mumsnet editor Jenny Wonnacott: Read our full Bosch Unlimited Aqua review

The Bosch Unlimited range of vacuums comes highly rated amongst Mumsnet users for their ability to blitz dirt, dust and debris, particularly on hard flooring. The Bosch Unlimited 7 Aqua is no exception; a two-in-one appliance with interchangeable mop and vacuum brush heads, it even converts to a portable handheld for those tricky, hard-to-reach areas.

While it took our tester, Jenny, a while to determine the right power setting for her needs (turbo mode reduces battery life considerably), she was impressed by its performance on the tiles, laminate, and engineered hardwood floors across her home.

Despite tidying up after three kids, the Bosch Aqua removed sticky marks with water alone; however, Jenny did add floor cleaner for more substantial spills and stains.

I have the Karcher hard floor cleaner and I love it. However, it only picks up small bits and I have to clean it [everytime] I use it. I have Karndean flooring and it shows every bit of fluff, the Karcher is the only thing I've found that picks up all the tiny bits and leaves it spotless. If there are bigger bits, I would have to hoover first.

Our verdict

While this hard floor cleaner doesn’t come cheap, Karcher is a brand trusted by Mumsnet users and cleaning experts with good reason, with impressive cleaning results that offer excellent value for money. With four universal rollers that spin in multiple directions, the Karcher FC7 picks up dirt whilst simultaneously mopping your floor, so there’s no need to vacuum before use.

Dealing with stubborn sticky residue like ketchup or pasta sauce? Just trigger the more powerful boost button. Using more water and a faster rotation speed, it tackles even the most ingrained stains on hard flooring - ideal for kitchens and high traffic areas.

The Karcher FC7 is suitable for all hard floor types, including parquet, tile, laminate, PVC, and vinyl, with a runtime of up to 45 minutes, depending on the mode. While it is pretty heavy compared to the other hard floor cleaners on our list, we love the flexible head that protects your back by effortlessly gliding under furniture. It also features a self-standing design, meaning you can easily take a rest when cleaning larger areas.

The innovative twin tank system on the Karcher automatically separates clean and dirty water during use, with the option to add detergent for shine and scent. In addition to the self-cleaning mode on the cleaning station, reviewers appreciate that the rollers can be easily removed and washed in your washing machine at 60 degrees.

What is a hard floor cleaner?

A hard floor cleaner is a cleaning appliance designed specifically for hard floors, such as sealed wood, vinyl, laminate, or tiles, and is a practical choice for homes with children and pets.

With upright designs that can sweep, mop, and dry in one pass, these lightweight cleaners are much kinder on your back and save time and energy, keeping your floors clean without the manual effort required by a traditional mop and bucket.

Using powerful suction, hard floor cleaners can also provide a deeper clean, scrubbing your hard floors and lifting away even dried-on spills or sticky marks with ease.

Unlike traditional mops that can leave watermarks or streaks, most hard floor cleaners leave your flooring relatively dry, shiny, and residue-free, allowing you to get on with your day.

How do hard floor cleaners differ from vacuum cleaners?

While there are some similarities, vacuum cleaners and hard floor cleaners are not the same thing.

Most vacuum cleaners (except for wet and dry models) are designed only to suck up dry debris, dust, and dirt. The majority of vacuum cleaners are suitable for use on both carpets and hard flooring. Some models require a manual switch to adjust the brush height, while others automatically adjust as you move between rooms.

Hard floor cleaners use water (and often detergent) to remove fresh and dried-on spills from hard floors, such as sealed wood and tiles. Unlike traditional vacuums, they use a water tank to effectively mop, scrub and dry your flooring. Although many can be used to revive thick pile rugs, hard floor cleaners should not be used on carpets due to the level of moisture they release.

What should I consider when buying a hard floor cleaner?

Here are some things to consider when choosing the right hard floor cleaner for your home:

  • Cordless vs corded? - For small clean-ups, quick once-overs or tackling fresh spills, cordless designs may be more convenient. These lightweight designs are easy to store and offer complete freedom when navigating your home. However, if you have a larger home with hard flooring throughout, a corded hard floor cleaner may be more practical, as it allows you to clean for longer periods without being limited by battery life. While they tend to be slightly heavier, most corded hard floor cleaners have long cables, allowing you to navigate between rooms without needing to seek out another plug socket.

  • Weight - If you’re likely to be carrying the hard floor cleaner up and down stairs, it's also worth considering the overall weight. For heavier designs, you can remove the water tanks to reduce the weight before lifting.

  • Cleaning and drying power - What suction performance does the hard floor cleaner offer? Can it handle dry debris as well as spills, or do you need to sweep the floor beforehand? For the most efficient cleaning, look for cleaners with strong suction and multiple power settings, which lift even stubborn marks like dried-on mud with ease. It’s also worth considering drying performance and how soon you can walk on the floors after use.

  • Capacity - The larger the dirty water tank's capacity, the longer you can use it without needing to empty it. While some hard floor cleaners have small 0.5 litre capacities, others can accommodate up to 1 litre.

  • Suitability for flooring - Most hard floor cleaners are suitable only for sealed flooring. If you have parquet flooring or flooring that is delicate when exposed to moisture, carefully check the compatibility before use. It’s also worth noting that most hard floor cleaners are suitable for rugs only, not carpets, so they should not be used as a replacement for your usual vacuum cleaner.

How we chose the best hard floor cleaners

Recommendations from real Mumsnet users

For reliable, firsthand experiences, we first headed to the Mumsnet forums, collating feedback from trusted Mumsnet users on the hard floor cleaner brands and ranges that they rate, recommend, and use in their own homes.

We also looked out for any negative reviews, where Mumsnetters highlighted products that they felt were poor quality, lacked suction power, or struggled to remove dried-on stains from their pets and children.

Expert opinions

Next up, we considered reviews and feedback from trusted industry experts. We want to be confident that the hard floor cleaners we recommend are fit for purpose, so we look out for award-winning products or those that are well-regarded in the marketplace, including those recommended by floor care and cleaning experts.

Authentic consumer reviews

We also thoroughly investigated genuine, in-depth customer reviews on retailer sites, such as Amazon, Argos, AO, and Currys, to gain a wider understanding of consumer experiences regarding the products on our shortlist.

Rigorous testing

To bring you our definitive list of the best hard floor cleaners on the market, we also conducted our own hands-on testing. Mumsnet editors put a selection of hard floor cleaners on this page - including the Vax and Bosch models - through their paces in real homes to see how they tackled everything from muddy footprints in hallways to crumbs under the kitchen table. Each model we tested was scored on cleaning power, battery life, ease of manoeuvrability, and overall value for money.
