a bed with a white cooling bed sheet

There’s nothing quite like diving into bed at the end of a busy day. However, add in summer heat or delightful menopause symptoms like hot flushes and night sweats, and you may spend more of your night tossing and turning than sleeping.

If you find yourself regularly overheating, even with a cooling mattress or summer duvet, it may be time to invest in some new cooling bed sheets. With breathable designs made from temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking fabrics such as cotton, linen, Tencel or bamboo, the best cooling sheets will help keep you cool and dry, no matter the weather.

Best cooling sheets, at a glance:

Portable air conditioners and quiet fans go a long way towards creating a comfortable environment in your bedroom, but nothing beats the feeling of temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking cooling fabric against your skin on a warm night.

To bring you reliable recommendations for the very best cooling bed sheets to buy, we tapped into the wisdom of the Mumsnet forums, seeking tried and tested recommendations on the cooling sheets that Mumsnetters rate. We then researched wider consumer reviews and the views of industry experts to ensure our top picks won’t disappoint.

Tested by Mumsnet editor Poppy O'Neill: Read our full M&S Comfortably Cool Review

When asked for cooling sheet recommendations, the M&S Comfortably Cool range was mentioned time and time again in the Mumsnet forums, praised for its ability to keep night sweats at bay. Despite being a little sceptical before testing, Mumsnet editor Poppy found that the M&S Comfortably Cool bedding was noticeably cooler to lie on than her previous cotton sheets.

Made from a blend of lyocell and cotton, reviewers love the super soft touch and M&S's StayNew™ technology that keeps it looking its best for longer. While some noted that the sizing is quite generous, the non-iron finish is a huge bonus to thos eof us who despise even the best steam iron chore, allowing you to throw them straight onto your bed without worrying about creases and crumples.

If you think cooling bed sheets are outside your budget, think again. The Slumberdown Cooling Bed Sheets are surprisingly affordable, with prices starting at just £22.

Despite the man-made fabrics, these sheets claim to be twice as cool as traditional polyester sheets, with a soft, silky fabric that draws moisture away from your skin as you sleep.

The catch? Size availability is quite patchy at the time of writing, so it's worth checking the different retailers linked above if the right size isn't available on the first site you visit.

While they certainly don’t come cheap, Soak & Sleep’s Egyptian Cotton bedsheets are about as close you can get to luxury comfort of hotel bed sheets – without needing to find a babysitter.

I have French linen from Sleep & Soak and love it. However, I do like it to be ironed which is quite a chore, although crumpled linen is promoted as the natural way. I sometimes compromise by just ironing the edges, which gives it a crisper look. The advantage with linen is that it improves with use, softening and becoming more comfortable. It is expensive though.

I have wool duvet and French linen bed linen from soak & sleep ( tried other brands and none were as good as these.) I will NEVER go back to anything else. I don't tumble dry either and I just love the soft 'slubbines' (- is that a word? ) and really dislike sleeping on anything else now.

I will never go back to any other bedding than linen now after trying it a few years ago upon a MN recommendation for being great during menopausal hot flushes. 😂 Get mine from soak & sleep.

Tried and loved by Mumsnet editor, Rebecca: read her review of the Soak & Sleep White French Linen bed sheets.

These French linen bed sheets from Soak and Sleep are naturally breathable, helping keep you cool in summer yet warm in winter.

Hypoallergenic, resistant to bacteria and moisture-wicking – they make a worthwhile investment if you have allergies or are prone to hot flushes during the night.

Mumsnet users loved the relaxed, crumpled charm of these linen sheets, with a soft and luxurious feel against your skin. If you prefer your bedsheets crumple free, a powerful steam generator iron is your friend! While they don’t come cheap, linen is incredibly hard-wearing, with the flax fibres becoming softer and stronger with every single wash.

6

Our verdict

Mumsnet users love these bamboo cotton blend sheets from M&S. Combining the breathability of cotton with the natural, moisture-wicking benefits of bamboo, these smooth and luxurious bed sheets are ideal for warm, humid nights.

Due to the blend of fibres, they’re hardwearing and are easy to care for too, with fabric that becomes softer and smoother with each wash.

Be warned, though, while they’re affordably priced, you’re likely to want the cooling comfort of the matching pillows too.

7

Dunelm do Dorma bedding. It is more expensive but the quality is definitely superior. I have one of their sheets for our superking and it is lovely and smooth and the right depth for the mattress.

Our verdict

While you may be less familiar with Tencel sheets, this sustainably sourced fabric is made from natural wood pulp and makes a surprisingly cool and comfortable addition to your bed. Mumsnet users who have tried Tencel or Tencel blend sheets have found them to be far cooler than cotton or linen - a blessing during those rare but stifling summer heatwaves.

As well as being lightweight and durable, these Dorma Tencel fitted sheets are naturally wrinkle-resistant, so you won’t need to worry about ironing before making up the beds – even when expecting guests.

They’re also an excellent choice for those with allergies, with fibres that are resistant to dust mites, mould, and bacteria.

Are cooling bed sheets worth it?

With soft and smooth fabrics, cooling bed sheets can draw moisture away from your skin, provide improved air flow and temperature regulation, helping you sleep better and wake up without feeling hot and sweaty.

If you run warm at night, struggle during the summer heat or experience menopausal night sweats or hot flushes, they could well be a game changer for your sleep. Combined with the best mattress for temperature regulation, cooling sheets can transform your sleep environment on warm nights.

How do cooling bed sheets work?

Cooling bed sheets are often more lightweight than traditional bed sheets, offering cool comfort without feeling stifling when the temperatures rise. They also tend to be more breathable, offering improved air circulation to avoid temperature fluctuations during the night. The moisture-wicking properties also absorb perspiration, pulling it away from the skin and evaporating, which can have an instant cooling effect.

What are the best cooling bed sheets to buy?

Deliciously cool, reasonably priced and they wash well, M&S Comfortably Cool Lyocell Rich Fitted Sheets are a triple threat, and that's why they're far and away the most regularly and highly recommended cooling bed sheets on the Mumsnet forums. Mumsnet editor Poppy O'Neill has personally tested the sheets and confirmed, "they definitely live up to their reputation."
