Because gay people exist everywhere. There’s a difference between supporting something and putting people in jail.

They are very far from perfect but for example in Jordan and Bahrain homosexuality is decriminalised unlike in UAE.

Ok, another world wide problem to add to the list.

1/3 of all countries don’t accept homosexuals, what are you doing about it?

Why would I need the UK government to help me, help me do what exactly?

Extradition if the shit really hits the fan in the war?

I think people don’t really understand that there is a massive middle class of asian and Arab workers in most gulf countries. When we lived in the middle east my DH’s CFO was Indian , with pay and bonuses he was probably making over a million in a good year. The gated communities are not just white, they are basically anyone with cash. Yes more service workers and construction workers are from south asia etc but if you actually walk into offices in places like Dubai you will see a lot of diversity. The international schools offering IB american curriculum and British curriculum have highly diverse school populations and these fees are not cheap.

I think there are plenty of reasons to object to the gulf but the idea that only white people and nationals make any money is not objectively true.

oh well that’s ok. As long as they offer equal opportunity slavery 🙄

Not living in them.

Leaving the country when it gets bombed, or did you miss that happening?

I dont think anyone is saying only white people are making money in dubai, but they are saying that only the slaves are brown and poor.

Ok so I struggle with this one a little, lots of conflict around construction workers and modern slavery being what Dubai is built on but these workers wouldn’t have this opportunity in their home country so they are better off so to speak. They are not shackled at the ankle and made to work all hours either, they have decent working conditions, with no work during intense heat during peak hours across the summer etc and make a good living versus what they could possibly only dream to make in their home country.

Domestic help such as nannies/housemaids - I personally don’t have any home help and from what I hear and have witnessed I would never want one. Again they are here for similar reasons as above however they are not qualified or trained to look after children, do house chores etc. But they serve a huge community of people out here, and it is very common to have help in countries out this way. What does make me laugh though is how many brits have them living in their homes (I get it because they work and have no village around them for help) but a complete stranger living in your home raising your children? Yet you have to spend hours/days/months training them how to do it all, most put cameras up in their homes to keep an eye on them because they are not trustworthy, a bit laughable really!

A hahahaha laughable, these untrustworthy migrant workers working for pittance, being treated like crap. Hilarious! 🙄🙄🙄

Hate to say it but it doesn’t sound much different to the UK

Sorry that's absolute nonsense and just reinforces @RedToothBrush 's point. I also lived in Dubai for two years and you are being slightly disingenuous about the labour situation (understandably given the reporting restrictions in the region). Workers have theoretical protection against outside work in high temperatures but in reality the authorities just lie about the actual temperature. It was very common to see workers trying to hide from the sun in the most extreme heat. The labour camps are like barracks (we used to go there to share Iftar meals with the workers) and workers are usually deprived of their passports. The passport holding thing also isn't restricted to labourers by the way. I met a few Europeans in office type jobs whose employers were holding their passports.
I left as I couldn't ignore the harsher realities of life in Dubai and just "skate over things" as you are doing.

I’d assume she’s living, supporting and paying tax in a country that doesn’t torture and murder homosexuals. Like many on this thread…
What are you doing about it?

I dress no differently to how I would be in the UK or Europe, for me here that is mainly gym kit day to day - shorts and a vest top so yes my shoulders and knees are on show. I wear this on the school run and around my community, in the gym etc.

If I’m going out to the mall for example I will cover up in jeans/trousers and a long sleeve blouse, mostly because it’s a little drafty walking around the shops in the air con.

For a dinner out I would perhaps wear a fitted dress.

Again I would cover up in any official government building as that is a must.

Overall a lot wear a lot less!

So you're OK with homosexuality being a crime because "The UAE is a Muslim country, why on earth would they support something that goes against their religion?"

But you wear shorts and vest top on the school run and presumably go to bars and restaurants where alcohol is being served?

Immigration problems?

You realise you are living in a place with one of the highest immigration rates in the world?

So given we have less immigration what are we doing wrong? I think the subtext here is the preferential model would be if we followed Dubai’s lead and kept our white immigrants in gated communities and non-white immigrants in out of town slums to be used for indentured labour where people wouldn’t have to mix with them maybe?

The cognitive dissonance of those who move to the Middle East to get away from immigration is just jaw dropping

I feel that there is a huge amount of non working immigration in the UK who are given everything on a plate (via people’s hard earned tax payments) and abuse all of the rules - leading to high crime rates, lack of safety and so on.

The UK is on its knees, no infrastructure to account for the high number of people living there - NHS, jobs, cost of living crisis, housing crisis I could go on, It’s not sustainable.

As a top rate tax payer and not seeing much back for what is put into the system I can hand on heart say I have no issue keeping 100% of it.

You are talking about the UK right? A society with a failing health system, immigration problems, cost of living crisis and lack of defence system - honestly tired of paying into that for now!

Then hand back your UK passport and recind your British citizenship. But no you won't because the second you lose your job in the UAE and they ask you to leave their country you will need the safety net of Britain to return to.

Didn't take long

Do you call yourself an 'expat'?

This...FFS. move to their country but ignore their laws in your 'community'.

Do you realise that it’s not unusual for these “happy” housekeepers and nannys in ME countries to abscond from their families when they are “given great travel opportunities” and taken to countries like the UK?

adding to the asylum seeker issue. And some of the stories are horrific.

The UK is not “on its knees” even if it had knees. At least we pay wages for work, slavery is outlawed, and you can’t take your passport of your employee to stop them leaving.

Fortuity · 20/10/2026 09:08

I should imagine that Dubai carefully manage who they allow into their country and give visas to. I would also expect that they know exactly who is in the country at any one time, unlike the UK which has hundreds of thousands of people living under the radar. I’m also pretty sure that Dubai would have no issue in returning foreign criminals to their own countries, unlike the UK which seems unable to remove anyone no matter how heinous the crime. Not the same at all.
