I have also dipped into this area and I think an awful lot of it is ignored here as it suits people, despite it being right there on the High Street for all to see.

People must report any suspicions they have. It really does help.

You realise you sound exactly the same as the white South African immigrants in the 80’s?

oh but they wouldn’t have jobs if it weren’t for is. They have it good, they get paid, what would they do if whites weren’t here providing jobs…

Or the slavers in the deep south in US. All the same arguments going back forever.

I don’t know what’s happened to our society - I thought we’d risen above this, honestly.

Anyway @britindubai just proved ever stereotype I ever thought about Brits in Dubai. Enjoy! I’m really happy to know that when you come back my taxes will pay for you and your family if god forbid you get sick or become destitute. And i feel pretty privileged that the people I employ can afford their own homes, and nice food, and a family life on the wages I pay them. I don’t feel like that makes me a mug. Makes me feel like I’m part of a society.

What should I be looking for to report? I’m aware that slavery and trafficking exist but I can assure you I’m not ‘ignoring’ anything; just unaware of what it is I’m supposed to be noticing and reporting.

Can you wear whatever clothes you like when in public. Or do you consciously have to think more about it.
For example would you think nothing of wearing shorts and a vest, or a sleeveless dress.
If course I am exporting you to reply that you wouldn’t go out wearing a bikini, but are you more conscious if not wearing ‘western style clothing?’

I dress no differently to how I would be in the UK or Europe, for me here that is mainly gym kit day to day - shorts and a vest top so yes my shoulders and knees are on show. I wear this on the school run and around my community, in the gym etc.

If I’m going out to the mall for example I will cover up in jeans/trousers and a long sleeve blouse, mostly because it’s a little drafty walking around the shops in the air con.

For a dinner out I would perhaps wear a fitted dress.

Again I would cover up in any official government building as that is a must.

Overall a lot wear a lot less!

Nothing to stop you employing a housekeeper in the UK @Obeseandashamed . They do have to be paid a decent salary though, unlike in Dubai where you can pay them half of fuck-all squared because they’re brown and come from a poor country.

Chapeau. Completely agree.

As I said up thread i support people escaping modern slavery in the UK. It is terrible that it happens here.

But it is at least ten times worse in Dubai and there is very little escape, as the authorities are complicit. As are people like yourself who chose to ignore it.

Sadly not a lot I can do about it, it’s a problem worldwide

There are several Muslim countries (and Muslim majority countries) where homosexuality is not illegal.

Good for them

Let’s be honest, most people begrudge paying tax because what do we actually get back for it? Long NHS waiting lists, schools underfunded, social care non existent, more chance of meeting a leprechaun riding a unicorn than getting a NHS dentist etc. Our society doesn’t care for everyone and you can believe it does if it makes you feel better but if I was a higher rate tax payer and had the chance to work somewhere with no tax I’d do it.

Exactly this

It is considerably worse in Dubai than most of the world (top 7 out of 220 countries is pretty fuckingbad).

There are things you could do, you just don't care enough to do them. Presumably having money is more important to you.

for example you could live in a country that has a judicial system and pays taxes.that tries to tackle slavery. The reason Dubai is so corrupt. In part is because people don't pay taxes and the money that is used for paying for services such as the police and the courts comes from the same industries that are funding much of the slave trade.
However, I don't think you really care.

Additup · 20/10/2026 08:41

Is it really as devoid of charm as it looks? It appears to be all shopping, man-made landscapes and shiny buildings is that it? Are there really no grass or trees?
Do you have to live in a special compound?
Are the locals really misogynistic?

britindubai · 20/10/2026 08:43

MyKindHiker · 20/10/2026 08:09

This. I couldn’t imagine living in a country where slavery is actually allowed and encouraged.

People need to realise that’s why they pay no taxes - because when labor is free by slaves, there’s nothing for taxes to pay for.

My ancestors fought and died to end slavery and now we have living in a country built on slavery as some kind of an aspirational flex 🤮

I’m alright living in a democracy and paying taxes thanks. Bit dull and I don’t get to drive one of those ugly sports cars around but at least I can live with myself.

Everyone is allowed an opinion and to live as they wish and that is absolutely fine.

I’m pretty certain though that if most were offered a life changing opportunity they wouldn’t think twice about it.

No where on this planet is perfect to live.

Do you have any gay couple friends, and would you welcome them to visit and 'be themselves' in Dubai?

I don’t have any gay friends

Hate to say it but it doesn’t sound much different to the UK

I was enjoying your thread until this comment. It’s a truly ignorant thing to say and completely dismissive of the abhorrent working and living conditions of the many thousands of slaves in your country!

She doesn't want to pay tax but I bet you any money if shit hits the fan she'll be the first in line begging your government to help her 😂😂😂

Why would I need the UK government to help me, help me do what exactly?

What would your plan be if you or your partner (if you have one) suddenly had a serious ilness, lost your job or experienced a financial crisis?

WinterAfternoons · 20/10/2026 08:49

Have the giant Sheikh Mo images aged at all now that he’s heading for eighty? He’s hovered around 55 in photos for decades.

Do you wash your hair in bottled water? (When I lived there a lot of people had hair loss issues from showering in only partially desalinated water.)

Are the ‘Barracuda bandits’ still going strong (extortion racket that involved following cars with Dubai plates whose drivers had purchased alcohol in Umm Al Quwain until they had crossed into Sharjah, which is a dry emirate, orchestrating a minor traffic incident and extorting money by threatening to report to the authorities)?

Are prostitutes still as much a feature of hotel ‘Ladies Nights’? Mostly Chinese and Russian in my day, but that may have changed.

Does the local rag (whose name escapes me — not The International, maybe Gulf News or the other one?) still publish photos of the dead bodies of unidentified construction workers in order to identify them? The frequency of it absolutely horrified me when we lived there. There was a spate of suicides, apparently because so many companies withheld wages for months years, that some workers felt the only way to get money home to their families was to step in front of a car, so that compensation would be paid.

I mean, you’d hope that the much-talked-of improvements would mean this no longer happens, but it was one of my first memories.

Any rumours doing the rounds? What strikes me now, looking back, is how many of what we heard as rumours or urban legends when we lived there later turned out to be true, like the kidnap and detention of Sheikha Shamsa and Sheikha Latifa, because the press is so heavily censored (and self-censored) that nothing at all critical of Sheikh Mo can be published.

I’ve thankfully never seen that in the 40 years I’ve lived in the UK. Maybe it’s unique to your area.

feellikeanalien · 20/10/2026 08:49

So basically as far as OP is concerned everything in Dubai is great and she doesn't actually care about human rights because she has a tax free salary. I think that about sums it up.

britindubai · 20/10/2026 08:50

Obeseandashamed · 20/10/2026 08:11

the one thing I wish I could have at home from dubai is the maid. I can’t understand the nanny’s raising your children but would love to have a live-in housekeeper/maid.

I hear you, I guess I haven’t truly spoilt myself here having my home looked after. We have friends out here who have maids and they are very looked after and are part of the family. It’s just not my thing, I like my own space.

I think people don’t really understand that there is a massive middle class of asian and Arab workers in most gulf countries. When we lived in the middle east my DH’s CFO was Indian , with pay and bonuses he was probably making over a million in a good year. The gated communities are not just white, they are basically anyone with cash. Yes more service workers and construction workers are from south asia etc but if you actually walk into offices in places like Dubai you will see a lot of diversity. The international schools offering IB american curriculum and British curriculum have highly diverse school populations and these fees are not cheap.

I think there are plenty of reasons to object to the gulf but the idea that only white people and nationals make any money is not objectively true.

ClairDeLaLune · 20/10/2026 08:52

britindubai · 20/10/2026 07:14

Ok so I struggle with this one a little, lots of conflict around construction workers and modern slavery being what Dubai is built on but these workers wouldn’t have this opportunity in their home country so they are better off so to speak. They are not shackled at the ankle and made to work all hours either, they have decent working conditions, with no work during intense heat during peak hours across the summer etc and make a good living versus what they could possibly only dream to make in their home country.

Domestic help such as nannies/housemaids - I personally don’t have any home help and from what I hear and have witnessed I would never want one. Again they are here for similar reasons as above however they are not qualified or trained to look after children, do house chores etc. But they serve a huge community of people out here, and it is very common to have help in countries out this way. What does make me laugh though is how many brits have them living in their homes (I get it because they work and have no village around them for help) but a complete stranger living in your home raising your children? Yet you have to spend hours/days/months training them how to do it all, most put cameras up in their homes to keep an eye on them because they are not trustworthy, a bit laughable really!

You struggle a little with modern slavery but it’s ok because their conditions are worse in their home countries? Fucking hell OP that doesn’t make it ok. So they should be grateful to have escaped terrible conditions in their home countries into slightly less terrible conditions as slaves in Dubai? And some of them are effectively prisoners as they’ve had their passports taken off them and don’t have the financial means to escape.
