Or the slavers in the deep south in US. All the same arguments going back forever.

I don’t know what’s happened to our society - I thought we’d risen above this, honestly.

Anyway @britindubai just proved ever stereotype I ever thought about Brits in Dubai. Enjoy! I’m really happy to know that when you come back my taxes will pay for you and your family if god forbid you get sick or become destitute. And i feel pretty privileged that the people I employ can afford their own homes, and nice food, and a family life on the wages I pay them. I don’t feel like that makes me a mug. Makes me feel like I’m part of a society.

Thank you but I won’t ever need any of “your” tax money, with Labour in charge over there I hope your good life continues

The very fact you have started a thread means you are either putting yourself at risk legally or are merely going to repeat the official government line.

Do you think it's possible for all Brits in Dubai to answer questions honestly under the threat of arrest if say anything about the military situation being bad or concerning or are critical of the UAE government in anyway?

There's no such thing as the ability to be 'honest' about Dubai. Being honest means you are free to say something negative, which you aren't, so you will avoid any difficult questions, self-censor or hand wave and merely repeat what you are supposed to rather than say anything 'honest'.

It is a put up or shut up culture. If you are an expat and dont like this you go home or learn to deal with that. There is no option B.

It's a fundamentally dishonest thread for that reason because it implies that if you weren't happy you'd be able to state that. You aren't. So all this thread can be is state propaganda for UAE or you are incredibly foolish and putting yourself at significant risk. Everyone reading this thread should be very mindful of this.

It'll be interesting how influencers cope if Iran's threat to destroy the internet cables is carried out. Weirdly we won't know about this though, because they'll be unable to share how it's affecting them with us. It'll just all go quiet.

This.

Ireolu · 20/10/2026 09:37

This thread...pretends to be shocked.
I have no issues with people living in the UAE, ILs live there, DH lived there till he was 18. We have benefited from this from being able to invest the tax free earnings. Lets however be frank with what the UAE represents. It is not democratic, it is exploitative of the foreign workers that come there for a "better life", life there is tiered and there is systemic racism, you may be flavour of the week at the moment OP but piss someone off and you could end up in jail (we have family friends that are exiled). This AMA is a load of candied apple. Goodluck OP and enjoy drinking the kool aid - just don't piss anyone off.

I love Dubai, but I couldn't manage the summers. The heat is on another level. Do you holiday somewhere cooler or just stick it out by staying indoors running the ac ?

This threads has done nothing to disabuse me of the notion that Dubai is chock full of vapid, morally bankrupt wannabes who close their eyes to slavery because it suits them. But it’s ok because they’re not wearing shackles.

what an awful place it sounds.

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2026 09:39

britindubai · 20/10/2026 08:47

Why would I need the UK government to help me, help me do what exactly?

There's been a few cases which are documented, where British citizens have been approached in the street to hand over their phones.

People who have taken a photo of anything related to bombing have been arrested - even if they have not shared that image.

People who have been critical of the government on social media have been arrested too.

At this point, the British Embassy gets involved. Just because you have not been in this situation, doesn't mean you might not need the British Embassy at some point.

Tbh your wisdom on this particular issue is something I would question by the very existence of this thread. Even though you are sticking to the line. You just don't know if you have got the tone /content exactly right. You don't know whether it still leaves you open to problems and yes actual arrest. Unless of course you are actively being employed by UAE to keep up appearances.

At this point I would be extremely mindful about what happens if the war with Iran escalated. The Emir of Qatar stating that war is coming and you should be ready for anything should be ringing in your ears. He didn't say it to scaremonger. The PM of Egypt saying there are massive problems ahead with security, food and political instability echoing the Emir should be taken seriously. The notifications put out by the US, UK and multiple Western countries should be in your mind. The issue of food self sufficiency and power should be in your head looking at Russia and Ukraine. There are fears that Iran will look to invade it's neighbours as a line of last resort should the shit start to hit the fan. That includes UAE. UAE is particularly exposed to food and water shortages btw.

You may suddenly find yourself feeling the need to ask the UK government at some point in the not too distant future. The reality may be, you will probably be on your own. The lifestyle you have now might be great. I'm not arguing with that. Is the lifestyle really worth the risk level at this point?

The lack of awareness of just how fragile and on a knife edge that is, despite all the evidence out there and what you will be aware of on the ground with warnings on mobile but don't talk about here (and should not do for your own safety given my first point) is just ostriching. That's fine. That's your decision. But if it happens there will be plenty who have gone on about the lifestyle being so great, who gets the most awful of reality checks that defensive security is something that has value too. I don't think there will be too many sympathetic voices in the UK and there will be a lack of public support for an active understanding fire rescue mission.

There will be no getting out. I hope your assertion about 'why would I need the British government' is honest in that respect. Remember as a guest, you won't be the priority. You don't control access to resources. In an emergency the foreigner premium will be valueless at ground level.

The airports are the first target. Water, internet, energy and logistics will be high on the target list. I hope you are well prepared. And I hope none of this ever happens.

I personally wouldn't want to lying in bed at night, hearing the alerts on my phone and ignoring it yet again and have that moment of self doubt kick in and realise I'm stuck and it's too late to get out.

This thread almost feels like it's you trying to convince yourself it's so amazing, worth it and to ultimately prove it to the world in order to crush those creeping moments of self doubt at 4am. I'm not buying it tbh.

Hey, yep we will ask you anything on MN. We also will offer counter considerations whilst you try to Sell The Dream.

Yeh, it’s nothing special or unique to live in Dubai. I know many people who live there and have visited myself

As such, I’m well aware that there have been hotels shut for ‘renovations’, malls empty, staff let go.

Many ex-pats live as normal but don’t pretend Dubai functions as normal. The tourist trade has plummeted and is relying on cheap deals and locals to use hotel restaurants etc. Even using a referral scheme to get people to visit!

The place is being propped up by the Gov but it won’t last forever. So enjoy while it lasts.

I personally haven’t seen an empty mall, some hotels did close for renovations and have reopened. Yes tourism is down but people are still coming, especially now the cooler temps are here.

I think Dubai will do ok being propped up by the government

People often make the choice to work there to support their families, they are not skilled enough to migrate to the west usually. I completely agree that the kafala system is abusive but it’s a lot more nuanced than people understand. White people are obviously welcome to apply for whatever job as well, they don’t want them.

I knew a housemaid (I never had one) who’s daughter was at an all girls private school in the himalayas. So it’s easy to look at it and say it looks awful and very clearly when passports are removed, abuse happens thats grotesque. However without that opportunity that womans daughter wouldn’t be getting a pretty good education which raises her own prospects to get professional employment. I had a regular driver who felt sorry for british people because his whole house in India had air con, his kids went to private school and he always made sure his wife and kids had access to the best healthcare in their area. It’s only simple of you never actually meet anyone or speak to anyone about how their life actually looks. For some life is extremely hard, theres no getting around that.

The one thing I would say about the emirates specifically which doesn’t apply to other gulf countries is that they have made efforts to improve, they have local labour laws which cover minimum wage and conditions, some countries now stipulate a minimum wage for their nationals to work in gulf countries. There are efforts to improve. Is it enough, I would say no, but it’s going in the right direction.

Also had a gay friend in a different gulf country, he was always on grindr and often worse lipstick. He was clearly super gay however he always said he had no intention of leaving as he was able to live his life as he pleased as long as he was discrete. No I absolutely 100% do not endorse legislation that penalises women and gay people etc but honestly Dubai isn’t the worst country in the gulf by miles in terms of personal freedoms. The rest of the arab world is a dumpster fire of rights as well. In Iraq they are trying to introduce something they call the ja’afri laws, it’s fucking horrific for women and children. In Gaza you can marry a 14yr old, Lebanon has no minimum age, Iran and Iraq allow marriage of 9yr olds. I don’t buy this whole the emirates is uniquely bad nonsense.

In Gaza you can marry a 14yr old.

In fairness, the same also applies to the United States of America. But we don't talk about that.

From what I have witnessed amongst friends housemaids they earn around the UK average salary all in and it’s tax free so they are better off - monthly payment to save or spend as they wish, live in a nice home for free so no house or bills to pay for. All food, clothing, beauty products paid for. Some drive so get given a car, petrol etc covered. Not worked all hours with 2 days off a week. Flights paid for to their home country, yearly bonus paid.

Of course that can’t be said for everyone but that is the case from those I know.

So are these figures wrong then, as they suggest maids earn £367-£510 a month which isn't exactly equivalent to UK salaries is it? 12-hour working day, and entitled to 1 day off a week.

We spend the summer between the UK and Europe as the desert heat is quite intense and we plan to do this every year.

Right now the temperatures are perfect and we do lots of activities outdoors, it should stay this way through to around May. So we only spend a couple of months braving the heat and doing things indoors. It’s kind of the reverse of the UK with cold wet months through Autumn/winter staying indoors. I feel you get more outside time here for sure.

There is an obscene amount of wealth in Dubai. The local Emiratis are some of the nicest people I have possibly ever met. It doesn’t feel particularly shallow to me, no different to any other major city in the world.

Now kiss someone of the same sex in public.

LienekeS · 20/10/2026 09:43

I hear of so many hotel workers not being paid when the travel to Dubai was zero. I could never live in a country like that. Been twice to visit friends. Seeing the construction workers being bussed in like cattle on busses with no Aircon. I placed some nurses there years ago and the British ones got apartments, anyone foreign got a form. We withdrew our contract.

Sorry to disappoint and it is indeed a sad state of affairs but let’s not be disillusioned by this, it is happening world wide

I think people don’t really understand that there is a massive middle class of asian and Arab workers in most gulf countries. When we lived in the middle east my DH’s CFO was Indian , with pay and bonuses he was probably making over a million in a good year. The gated communities are not just white, they are basically anyone with cash. Yes more service workers and construction workers are from south asia etc but if you actually walk into offices in places like Dubai you will see a lot of diversity. The international schools offering IB american curriculum and British curriculum have highly diverse school populations and these fees are not cheap.

I think there are plenty of reasons to object to the gulf but the idea that only white people and nationals make any money is not objectively true.

💯 this

The AMA about Dubai have been done many times. What's your aim with this one? Is it to reassure people after the attacks subsequent to the war with Iran?.
