I just don’t want to do secret Santa!

Just a little rant!

SIL has asked again this year to do secret Santa for the whole family - third year in a row after being turned down the previous two years. The first year we said it wasn’t our thing thanks but no thanks, last year we just said oh well we’ve started buying presents already - I’m trying to be polite and non confrontational but she either will not get the message that we aren’t interested or simply doesn’t care and wants to push what she wants anyway. This year it was in a group chat so even more awkward.

I just don’t want to do it. It doesn’t fit in with your we finance Christmas, and I find the idea generally joyless and miserable. I enjoy choosing presents and wrapping them up nicely for people - I don’t want to select an item from an approved list and have everyone spend the same (may as well just buy something for yourself).

The thing is I could not give less of a shit if she and BIL don’t want to buy us Christmas presents because of money or laziness or whatever else, I just don’t want to be told who I can and can’t buy presents for and have the joy of choosing taken away from me. I’m really happy for people to just please themselves and spend whatever they feel
comfortable but it’s causing drama.

It’s not even like we are one of these massive families where some kind of arrangement (not secret Santa though please!) to keep costs down would make sense - it’s just 3 couples and a baby!

You actually said ”a limit of £50pp has been suggested” and it wasn’t clear who said that. I had assumed that when discussing SILs request, one of the family had said that.

But one third of your group DO want it to change clearly, or they wouldn't keep asking.

You sound quite controlling OP.

The decent thing to do would be to do SS alternating/ every third year as a compromise to everyone but it seems like you just want to 'win' this battle against your DSIS. Currently you're just insisting they compromise with what you want, which actually isn't what a compromise is at all!

I’ve suggested lots of ideas for compromises that don’t suck the joy out of Christmas

Ultimately her desire to keep pushing this is just as arbitrary as my desire to say I don’t want to isn’t it

Yes, but your method is creating much more waste. Pretentious fancy packaging and unwanted items on your side compared to one item someone would actually enjoy getting.

Or you can enjoy picking out gifts for those you love and that you know they'd like (doesn't need to be £££, just thoughtful) and enjoy receiving gifts from those who care for you.

The bit about ‘gifts you know they’d like’ doesn’t always ring true though!

For sure. And it’s the case for some people in my family. We tend to do a family present for my brother’s family but for my sisters I really enjoy present buying for them.

such as?
Ive read the entire thread and have not seen you mention these.
(incidently, whether joy is 'sucked' or not is your personal opinion, not everyones)

Christ. Can no-one just acknowledge that the OP doesn't WANT to do this, for her own good reasons. And neither would I.

SIL reasons are equally good, but OPs gone hard on the nasty digs at her.

I wouldn't let someone else dictate the way I do Christmas, trampling over my way of enjoying it. The OP is best off out of it.

Not true at all and you would know that if you had read my posts properly. I don’t care if we exchange gifts with them, what I object to and DH objects to is being told he can’t buy presents for his parents if he wants to

You aren’t being told that really, you’re all adults. You could just get them something and give it on Xmas Eve or in a lower key way if you wanted to.

Everyone just has bad reading comprehension skills on this thread. 😂

canklesmctacotits · 18/10/2026 14:22

Have you asked her why she’s so keen on SS? Or has she offered an explanation?

Chowmeintiger · 18/10/2026 14:35

YouMustBeTheWeasleys · 17/10/2026 12:25

Because the way of doing it suggested is we give a list of things we want…so may as well just forget the whole thing and buy it for yourself

You know why she’s suggested that right? Because she’s fed up of her family buying her tatt she doesn’t want or need!

You say you enjoy picking out presents for people but don’t spend alot of money. I would be interested to know exactly what you are buying for people because if it’s a cop out Boots 3 for 2 and the rest of the family do the same, I would understand why she’s suggested it. You don’t have to spend alot of money on people to get a gift they like, but 9 times out of 10, spending not a lot of money leaves you with gift sets which I think are awful unthoughtful presents!

Edited

I have never bought someone a gift set ever.

What?
You think you can't get something nice with a tenner that isn't a gift set?

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 18/10/2026 14:41

Why don’t you do secret Santa, find out who you are buying for, and buy something. Then buy other things for other people too.

So eg if you get your FIL, buy him whatever. Then go shopping for your MIL and husband. And your BIL and SIL since you get joy on buying them something. And your SIL can buy for whoever her person is.

Then everyone will be happy.

Because that would be a mature, low-key. problem-solving response to the situation which wouldn’t leave any option to butt heads or fall out with anyone?

😆

Well they could have a fight about whether mince pies should be eaten with cream or ice cream maybe? Or left naked.

Then we could get another thread about it!

I appreciate that but a limit of £50pp has been suggested. Between a couple that’s £100 which you could easily buy 4 presents for which is why I think money is a red herring.

Read more of the thread and answered my own question. It’s very clear you are buying absolute tatt if you are only spending £25 per person. She’s suggested a £50 limit because that way everyone gets a much nicer, more thoughtful present they would actually use and in return it actually saves people money. She is definitely fed up of receiving tatt!

I also think it’s really selfish to buy people a gift you know they don’t really want just because you like doing it. Giving gifts is all about making the other person feel special, not about making yourself feel good. You’re the worst type of gift giver OP - forcing it on everyone and making them feel obligated to buy something in return, which they then probably spend time and more money than you are buying something lovely for you, to receive some utter rubbish back! I’ve been there and done it. It’s annoying!.

Is he really that bothered? If so why doesn't he just ignore her and do what he wants? Why are you both letting yourselves be dictated to?

Wow. I'm on a different planet to you!

Ethelspagetti · 18/10/2026 15:31

We did a secret Santa for family one year and it sucked all the joy out of it! I was given a name and what they wanted. I bought it and gifted it! He may as well have bought it himself! The following year we agreed no presents for each other, only the children! I still buy for parents and grandparents though, and they appreciate it!

Gwenhwyfar · 18/10/2026 15:32

CandyCrushLevel14809 · 18/10/2026 12:53

Actually many adults don't buy nice things for themselves ie. I think it's more than "certain people".
I'm not talking about being clothed, fed and warm, but the treat things, like a nice hand cream, or a new book, or a jigsaw. Something that makes you feel that someone else has thought about you. That can make you feel loved.

Fair enough. I imagined that most people who aren't living hand to mouth would buy themselves a book if they wanted it, but maybe not.

It's true that there are things I would like but don't buy, such as very beautiful notebooks because I know I can get a cheap notebook and it does the same thing...
