So glad DH looks worse every year- as indeed do I- and I don't have to do all this to keep up.😀
This thread is exhausting.

Laura Geller make up is really good for mature skin. The baked foundation goes on well and quickly and doesn’t settle into fine lines and wrinkles. It’s a powder and my whole routine takes 5 mins with it

BusterGonad · Today 07:20

Can you do a better picture, wearing leggings and a vest top so we can see your body type?

@BitterHarvest your thread is on Facebook just so you know. Your background could be a giveaway?

Hiya,
Join the style me happy community on Facebook. She does really reasonably priced season palette and body shape analysis and will tell you all of the styles and shapes that will back you GLOW! Also, you can post outfits in there and the women are absolutely lovely. Even if they offer critique it’s always very tactile and not malicious!

recently lost 13st then had skin removal so I have also had a style crisis as I could only ever wear leggings and tunic dressed before. (i am late thirties). they’ve been great with me x
good luck xx

No one has to wear makeup @Idontpostmuch

its my thing, and the op asked for help, but I’m very much each to their own

@Nylonflares I'm really confused. You're making no sense. Are you addressing wrong poster? Please explain.

I'm not very 'put together' myself, but I do have good skin and (I think) wear OK clothes. Here's what I notice in other people as I get older: hair (thick/sleek/good shape/blended greys etc) and nails (I pick at mine, so envious of others' bright manicures).

Re clothes, buy some good quality basics. Have a bra fitting (it makes a difference). Uniqlo have some basic jewelled coloured tops with cashmere in them. Lovely, warm, simple. Buy some vintage-y trainers. And invest in a good coat.

BreadBarberShop · Today 07:58

I would look into colour analysis. Work out your colour season (bright spring, soft summer, warm autumn, dark winter... or maybe something else?), find your best colours/shades and wear them on top near your face for an easy and instant glow-up!

Arcticbattle32 · Today 07:58

Don’t know what your hair is like but maybe get to the hairdresser for a cut and colour? And do that regularly…. Space NK for advice on make up? I like mint velvet clothes for comfy and practical fashion. And adidas samba / gazelle trainers.

QOD · Today 08:06

I’d get a lash tint and lift. More natural than makeup

leggings and long flowy top and most importantly a good bra to hoik the girls up

I agree with @OsfameronTanamoril. Op you need to find a way of making this enjoyable otherwise you're going to give up after a couple of weeks and then feel even worse.

I'd pick out a couple of things that sound to you like fun. Doesn't matter if it's experimenting with lipstick, looking through a load of fashion magazines or apps, watching what people wear in the coffee shop (or wherever) or going into town for a try on session. Start there. Increase when you feel ready.

Sorry, just saw that you had your colours done and that you're a soft summer - in that case you are wearing the exact opposite of what you should be wearing with that jumper! I would definitely lean into your colour palette, personally it made the world of difference for me.

I'm new to Instagram but now follow secretly.styled She has simple but very good ideas for helping those of us with no clue look a bit more with it. You have a great figure so can easily look well turned out. It just takes a couple more minutes in the morning instead of throwing on trousers and jumper.
ETA and a decent haircut possibly with highlights if you have sunk into mousey brown like I have. I just don't understand how my natural hair colour can be so unflattering 😅

purplehair1 · Today 09:03

I can’t see your face as FB has covered it up but for clothes you can get a free personal shopping session at John Lewis? You aren’t obliged to buy any of the outfits but the personal shoppers will find clothes they think suit you (you can suggest occasions such as a wedding, work, etc that you might need the outfits for) and they’ll bring in planned outfits for you to try on in store. It’s great I’ve done it a couple of times.

Yes! I love (loved) seasalt things trousers are white stuff. When they first came to Belfast I spent a fortune because I love their stuff but hey it’s all going on Vinted!

Oh please don’t get rid of things you love! Try putting them with different things if you feel you’re missing some mark.

BitterHarvest · Today 09:09

Thank you all for the advice. I’m pleased for the negatives as well as the positives because it gives me somewhere to start. I wear a size 18 because I have a round tummy. Mt natural waist is high and is about 42in my belly is about 45 ins but my hips are 42 ins. So jeans and trousers on the whole fit at waist and are huge on legs. Tops in a smaller size fit beautifully on
shoulders but stretch over the tummy. It’s not a pleasant site and I could never ever tuck in. It would show of the fatty mound in my pubic area. (I’ve had 5 kids this is just the way I am)

You are no way size 18! You probably just wear clothes that are too big for you. Try size 14, try some brighter colours but it hard to sa which colours would be good. We need to know your hair and eye colour. Wow hair products are good if your hair look dull. Get a good hair cut and your eyebrows shows me tinted, then use some tinted bb cream, mascara and a of blusher. Buy new clothes and take a friend to advise on what suits you. Sell all old clothes on Vinted or give to charity. Join a Pilates class

Similar issues here, OP! I have absolutely no innate fashion sense though I can see how good others look. My children have told me that I must pair baggy bottoms with a tight/fitted top and vice versa. I think you would look great in those trousers with a fitted T shirt or that jumper with tight jeans/leggings. I’ve also taken up wearing a necklace & earrings full-time & do feel smarter. Best of luck!!

Then I would switch to dresses and skirts. With tights in this season obviously.

I think you could easily look great.

i agree with this. So much about clothes is how you put them together and often the retailer has done the hard work for you. Here’s the way your jumper has been styled on the website with a different cut of trousers ( in this case jeans) but more importantly the belt to add some shape to the look and the bit of white tee shirt underneath .
of course it isn’t to everyone’s taste and there will be someone along in a minute to say that they wouldn’t be seen dead in it, but we don’t all like the same things or want to dress in the same way otherwise life would be a bit dull.

Have a look at @ scarfandamug on instagram. She doesn’t always get it right in my opinion but some of her outfits (she’s about a 16/18 with that apple sort of shape- she’s currently pregnant and wearing the same clothes as when not pregnant). Anyway see if there are outfits you think look good on her and try to recreate the sense of it, like.

You have a lovely figure

How can you tell?
She certainly doesn't look like a size 18, but the clothes she is wearing hide her figure and don't particularly flatter.

One tip though, don't wear horizontal stripes, generally they make people look wider.

That is a myth that has been disproved many times. Research in visual perception shows that a shape filled with horizontal lines looks taller and narrower than an identical shape filled with vertical lines.

Agree with the suggestion to get a professional bra fitting. Once the foundation garments are right everything looks so much better. I remember watching a Trinny and Susannah years ago and one woman in particular looked so much slimmer wearing a properly fitting bra. It helps define your middle so much more. Remember to take a fitted T-shirt to try over the bra so that you can see more clearly if the bra fits well. The four boob look is not great.

And lastly, I agree with wearing colours that suit you. It makes a huge difference.

You are closing yourself off to newer more flattering shapes so I think someone's idea of a personal stylist might be a good idea. There are tricks to deal with and minimise body issues eg clever use of a belt which you probably think is a big no no .
