I dont even think it looks good on the model, the outfit the model is wearing looks old and frumpy but she can get away with it as shes so slim. Paired with something else perhaps but those jeans look dreadful. Baggy stuff on tiny people doesnt look great, in particular as you get older. The oversized look is great for teens/early twenties but 40s/50s not so much (IMO).

Agreed.

I get what you mean @SexyFrenchDepression , but I don't like blanket dissing of good brands.

Some of the suggestions on here are good, some bad.
I was curious as to what your suggestions were.

(Only my jimjams look 'Seasalt')

Apologies for the blanket dissing! I didnt really mean it as harsh as it sounded!

Look, I have fluffy disney pjs so I cannot talk!

I think for me the key thing is good fabrics. Now I’m older I really appreciate silk, cashmere and good cotton. I think the OP should have a look at Pinterest and see what kind of looks she likes and go from there.

I find if I’m “influenced” it never feels like me. I may be 53 but I still like clothes and need to trust my own style rather than listening to others so much! (Note to self) Pinterest is great and then you can work from there, factoring in the colours that suit. I also use reverse image on google a lot.

@SexyFrenchDepression , What do you recommend for someone in their mid-50s?
In particular, one who has had 5 DC and has an hourglass figure.

At the least colours that are flattering, I cant answer exactly for the OPs shape, but there have been loads of suggestions on here by people similar shape and suggestions of how to find out what would look good. Definitely something with a bit more shape though and not short trousers.

I'd never heard of Seasalt so have just had a look on their website 😱 no wonder i haven't heard of it, its the sort of stuff I would have bought my 90 yo nan!

😒
Please stop with the ageism!

I dislike their sludgy colours, patterns and tunics, but they sometimes have plain pieces in brighter colours. Their website doesn't do their clothes any favours, yet their shops present the clothes in a much better way. They currently have some lovely knitwear in.

I have a Seasalt near me, and 90% of the time I have a look around and don't buy anything, but occasionally they have an absolute gem. Their clothes are well made and are often made from organic cotton. Their sustainability credentials are better than many other popular brands of clothing.

I'm quite old myself. I'm entitled to an option, my specific 90 yo nan wore very similar stuff, I am commenting on my experience. My 70 yo mum would say its frumpy, shes allowed an opinion also. I can only comment on their website as never seen a store before.

I dont care what people wear at what age, i hate any comments either way, eg that person cant wear x,y,z at their age, people can wear what they like but OP is specifically asking for stuff to improve her look.

SexyFrenchDepression · Today 12:46

HughManity · Today 12:42

Shall I bin my excellent raincoat, t-shirts and pyjamas?
They probably are aimed at a 'middle-aged and older' demographic, but they are good for staples.

What do you recommend for someone in their mid-50s?

Of course not, presumably you dont wear your pjs out, the others stuff you mentioned is standard stuff which I mentioned anyway. I am 47 so not young but I hope I have many years before I turn to a really drab wardrobe, if ever. I look for stuff that suits my shape, size etc which is different to the OPs, there have been loads of good suggestions on the thread.

Its bog standard, fairly boring stuff, good staples as you say but if OP wants to look better then its not the way forward. Its the opposite of what she's asking for. It most definitely is dressing for middle age which is fine if its what you want.

I definitely think OP can find much better stuff for her age. The odd jumper from there is fine for bumming around indoors but for a put together outfit to do more than go to the supermarket or walk the dog I don't think its right for someone in their mid 50s.

Whatever you do, please go to a DENTIST not a salon or social media adverts for the teeth whitening. A dentist is only about £300 and will provide safe products.

agree 100%!

Nofeckingway · Today 12:30

@BitterHarvest I get what you mean about the stomach . No matter what you do having 5 kids is going to show ! I too want to hide it with longer tops . Telling me to tuck in leaves a big stick out thing and then short legs . So I don't like trousers and tops . I do tend to wear a lot of dresses but not always practical I know .

desperatemum1234 · Today 12:28

I love this woman’s style OP - some looks are OTT but I get inspiration from many of her outfits:

I don’t get the hate for Seasalt either, although I avoid their printed jersey dresses and anything called a tunic. Generally their clothes are well made and wearable, and they have some good designers who make interesting shapes. They never descend into cheap like M&S or cutesy like Whitestuff, except in their socks, but I quite like a bit of whimsy inside my boots. I hate Roman, Very, Sosander, Joe Browns and Live Unlimited though, so, each to their own.

Thank you all for the advice. I’m pleased for the negatives as well as the positives because it gives me somewhere to start. I wear a size 18 because I have a round tummy. Mt natural waist is high and is about 42in my belly is about 45 ins but my hips are 42 ins. So jeans and trousers on the whole fit at waist and are huge on legs. Tops in a smaller size fit beautifully on
shoulders but stretch over the tummy. It’s not a pleasant site and I could never ever tuck in. It would show of the fatty mound in my pubic area. (I’ve had 5 kids this is just the way I am)

If you're going to try make-up, I advise that you go softly softly. Try a lipstick close to you own lip colour but a bit brighter. Get advice for that (i recommend bobbi brown), and get use to putting it on and seeing yourself with it. Small changes, bit by bit.

Sea salt is horrific. Bland and frumpy

It's not. I thought the same but I went to the shop to buy something for my mother and found lots of nice clothes there.

They are wearable, decent quality, practical clothes that actually fit real women with real lives.

I wouldn't pick the brand for a 'glow-up' but the clothes aren't hideous by any means.

OhYeahOhYeah · Today 12:05

Cherrytree86 · Today 11:00

@OhYeahOhYeah

how do you get tret?

I get a dermatologist prescription face cream from Dermatica, which has tretinoin in the formula.

It is super and has really made such an improvement to my skin for fine lines, radiance and plumpness.

It isn’t the cheapest but is so much more concentrated than any retinols you can get over the counter, and tret isn’t something you can get on the high street, so to me it is well worth the £29.99 each time xx

Bobblygreenjumper · Today 12:01

You look in great shape to be honest. I just think you could do with a better shaped jumper.

Do you sew OP? It looks like you have a bit of a sewing set-up behind you.

If you want to explore the idea of makeup book a John Lewis full makeup consultation (not all the stores do them) which costs £46, which is refunded from any purchases. I went because I didn't feel my makeup made me look how I wanted it too. The changes were: much lighter dewy foundation, repositioning of blusher, much more eye makeup with darker colours near my eyes, lip pencil and lip oil instead of lipstick. I'm a fair bit older than you and can't begin to explain how much better it made me look, people actually said they had never noticed what lovely green eyes I have before! This year I have lost 3.5 stone, remodelled my body at the gym and bought loads of new clothes, but the new makeup was possibly the best bit of the journey.

You are not a minger! But I get it when you are feeling down about yourself, I’ve been there, a few years ago in fact and this is what I did (okay beware I invested ££ but it was worth it ..and you don’t have to do it all!) -

  • Teeth whitening - best investment I have ever made, changed my life.
  • Second best investment was a personal stylist for the day - she was amazing and got me out of skinny jeans! Made me look at clothes different, with more confidence. There are apps that can help with clothes these days. Colour matching makes such a difference but somewhere like John Lewis can do that for you without the need for a stylist. Look at recent trends and use ChatGPT to help. M+S are great at the moment.
  • Botox - small amount and only get it once a year.
  • Space NK girls helped with natural makeup that didn’t cling to my every line but during the day I tend to just wear concealer, tinted moisturiser, lip balm and mascara. LOVE tinted moisturiser, it’s amazing and gives you that slight tanned look. You don’t need to spend a fortune on makeup - google for reviews.
  • If you are larger go to Bravissimo for bras, they are amazing and completely change your shape.

If your skincare is good you are halfway there! The clothes you have on don’t do much for your shape or colour, stay away from the green!! Good luck x

A lot of their clothes are, but not all of them. They currently have some lovely knitwear in that isn't bland or frumpy.

There is a lot of Seasalt hatred on MN with some outdated and preconceived ideas, although I agree that some of their clothes should go into room 101.

hey are shapeless and lose their shape even more in the wash

@Sussexserpents That has not been my experience with the few pieces I have owned.
