Narcissist female friend in close group - An Empath's ongoing tale

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 15:39

Hi everyone, sorry for the long post. This may not sound like a big problem but those who have abusive family and friends know how difficult it is to break the cycle and to not lose the all the other mutual friends/family in the process. I have spent the whole afternoon crying everyday the past few days.

We are a group of about 7 ladies who know each very well, the kids are friends and the dads/husbands all know each other well too. Holidays have been had together over the last 4-5 years , plenty of meet ups etc.

It started with 2 ppl being neighbor's, the third being another school mum, the fourth being same church and so on, but now all know each other on an equal footing supposedly.

I was the one who invested a lot originally in bringing the group together as a cohesive unit as well.

I have been in a similar group before this one , which was in my 30s (I am now in 40s), pre-pandemic and there was one person who was a narc there too and made my life miserable, I eventually had to leave the group , as she had built up flying monkeys etc and I had to leave or die of exhaustion trying to be better.

Fast-forward to this group that started five-ish years ago, and bang same thing, one dominant narc, and I find myself doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the group over the last year esp. and getting very little respect from the narc who (of course) is the self appointed leader of the group, I thought i was handling it better but all I did really was stick my head in the sand, and hope it magically got better. I think she is teaching the others to disrespect me too, and there is some laughter behind my back, but I think the others are confused and misled by her a lot.

After educating myself a lot in the past 6 months with Dr Ramani videos, other books on narcissism , I did manage to learn a few things. I want to not run away this time - with all my soul , I want to solve this riddle.

Things I learnt -

  1. Yes Narcs exist. I have to fight myself to believe this , as I am religious and constantly trying to do good and believing that it is what others want to do in return as well. I am constantly naively shocked when people behave nastily despite giving my head a wobble all the time. They walk amongst us, call them narcs, or dark triad, or evil, or selfish. Accepting this made me so sad I was in denial for so long
  2. Narcs target empaths
  3. Narcs hold a lot of envy in them. Empaths naturally care and enjoy human company, they make many things look easy that don't come easily or naturally to narcs

I tried one last time after another 4 years of subtle undermining, targetting , bullying by my 'friend' narc - to make her understand how i felt - overworked (doing all the organising, paying at times, hosting, meal prep for meet ups etc , a lot of the time). Even though I know appealing to their empathy is supposed to never work.

Her answer basically was people who were in financial problems or other depressions in the group needed me to carry their load as well. She spoke for them, she was deciding who would do what and made it subtly clear to me that no one had time for 'anyone being difficult'.

She had decided that some people would need to contribute very little in terms of money time and effort and still be appreciated a lot, and vice versa - and that she held the power to decide this. She has built one or two of the vulnerable 'follow the leader, just want a good time' types into her supporters by now.

I feel God or the universe is giving me the same life lesson again and again, and till I learn and own the situation and deal with it, it will not go away.

I have as of last week left the phone group that the 8 of us were on - and have created a new one for an event I always do annually at mine - and have excluded the narc and one more person I felt did not bring anything positive to my life and was in the group to take / not share or build genuine friendships (and hence usually went along with the narc's ideas).

I had originally included the narc as well, for the event but after leaving the main standing WhatsApp group, I removed her from this event one , and had said I would add her to 'another group for similar event I was co planning' that had other people that were in the same charity community thing she was involved in.

It made not much sense, as obviously she would want to be in the one our friends were in and perhaps additionally in the other one not in lieu of. But for the first time I have tried the non truthful, manipulative, subtle, 'words don't match actions' , word salad, approach that narcs take - as apart from greyrocking, I think fighting them with their own games is the only way to extricate without open conflict. I am trying to play her own game back at her now.

So for the first time I have done something to detach from only her while retaining the other friends.

Please advise if have been in similar, what can I expect next from her? from those of you with lived experience ? Narcs do not give up power easily and she has bled me dry with hundreds of little paper cuts in the past 4 years so will she let me go peacefully?, especially knowing I havent run away per se from the whole group in fear, but intend to still have most of the others over in two months time - or do I now face the narc rage for excluding her? God help me.

I have to do this without hurting the DC network with the other DC's + I do not want this breaking up the dad's weekly dates or my family getting victimised in retribution and exclusion targetted at me if that makes sense.

Please help..... I am actually very scared ....I have never stood up to a narc in my whole adult life, I just run away when I can and start over

Time to be up front invite her to your do you don't want to risk dcs and hubbies friendships. When she says ooh when are you doing another say sorry it's somebody else turn now. When she says you do the catering say sorry somebody else will have to take a turn.
No excuses just flat out refusal if she carries on just say I have just told you no

No I definitely told her I don't want to pull all the weight, and she got all cold, and made the others get cold too

You don’t have to phrase it like that.
you can say:

Ive done a lot of the hosting over recent months - lets do the next one at yours?

but your house is bigger? Actually I think all of our houses are lovely don’t you agree and it’s about the company so I really do feel you need to host the next one?

but you are such a brilliant host and have more money / actually Jane I have never spoken about money with you rather vulgar don’t you think? Plus all the organising, cleaning and so on - so you organise the next one?

but / Jane I’ve been clear now it’s a no / the next few are not going to be at my house I need a break from being the host, let’s do yours on Saturday ?

I always find saying … my plans for that weekend aren’t fully formed yet but we have more than enough on at our house already, so get back to me when you have a venue and time and I will let you know if I can make it

SchnitzelAgain · Yesterday 18:19

Narcs and empaths are different sides of the same coin; imagine she is somewhere right now describing you as the narc and herself as the empath, You will only “win” by withdrawing your investment in being right.

See, now your writing style and punctuation is completely different from your first posts and title. If you have used AI perhaps this is why people here are replying the way they do. Because the wording and everything becomes way too dramatic and it feels like something is off. A small thing is written like a good vs evil film script.

Well, one only needs to look at the thread title to see this is an ‘exercise’. In what, I’m not sure.

Hence my crying for three days

This is quite possibly the silliest MN thread I’ve ever read. And I’ve been here for some time, so the competition is steep.

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 17:36

Please read that as me trying to say ' I wish to FUCKING HELL I could be underhanded and manipulative JUST ONCE ....I CANNOT BEAR THIS PAIN OF BEING GOOD ANYMORE' and still I cant stop

I am literally having chest pain

For goodness sake.

PollysKenwood · Yesterday 18:48

I don’t really do big groups. It’s too complicated. Even if the people involved all like the same things, it’s easier just to meet up with 2 or 3, otherwise things quickly become logistically tricky and then things get stressful.

Twatalert · Yesterday 18:52

Empaths do not exist. It is a trauma response and not a superpower. The way you describe how you are handling this confirms that. You are totally entangled in it and their game. You need to step back and focus on yourself and your wants and needs as opposed to fighting some invisible fight. Maybe let the friendship group go and take the people you genuinely like with you. I.e. continue to see them.

DoughnutDreamer · Yesterday 19:00

Taking you at face value, I recognise the type of friendship group you’re talking about and how toxic the dynamics can become when one person becomes the Queen Bee and everyone else is very happy to protect their place in the group by quietly turning a blind eye to the treatment of one member. I’ve been there, done that and learnt to avoid people like that in the future. I have also seen it play out that way with others and seen how it affects the “weaker” person as more and more people in the group start displaying the same negative behaviour as the Queen Bee.

I am sympathetic to what you’re going through but I just cannot understand why you’re putting yourself through this again after your first experience with your previous friendship group. You need to stop letting yourself be a doormat to others and maintain boundaries. And you need to recognise these types of people before you and your family become so entwined within that group.

The fact that you keep jumping when she tells you to tells me that you’re not feeling at all secure in this group, not just with her, but with the others as well. You don’t believe they have your back so you are allowing them to take advantage of you and walk over you in your quest for acceptance. Friendships shouldn’t be this difficult. You need to call it a day with this group. You’re flogging a dead horse here. And the fact you’ve ousted her from the group will ultimately look to the others like you’re the bad guy and she’s the wronged party, so they will start pulling away from you and towards her.

ViciousCurrentBun · Yesterday 19:01

Sounds like a high school drama.

I agree with @PollysKenwood about big groups. I’m one of 5 sisters, when we started dating, working, having kids it got complicated to all meet up and many times not everyone could be there, one was really bloody dramatic about it all. Over emotional, all it did was make me want to avoid her.

PotatoLove · Yesterday 19:07

No is a whole sentence, narc or not. You need to stick to your guns.

Call the police and have him dealt with. Start worrying about the important things in life - you’re in an abusive relationship. All this childish friendship nonsense is ridiculous when you have such a big issue to deal with.

Weeellokthen · Yesterday 19:18

Catterbat · Yesterday 18:00

Well don’t then. Go and rob a bank if it makes you feel better.

My own personal experience with narcissists is that they have a tendency to accuse other people of being narcissists. There’s very little more narcissistic than believing you are an empath.

😂I was thinking the same

Every time when we are well in to the evening, wine inside me and I am happy and effulgent and we have set the worlds to right 3 or 4 of us who love a good laugh that is when she says

'weren't you going to organise a barbeque.....'

'Isn't your special anniversary due, are you having us over....'

And I am pretty much ' I Loves yws all, of course we're going tooooo partttty...'
even when happy party me is saying that, the other half of me is thinking 'no no no no no pls shut up...' to myself

But why don’t you simply message the next day and say “omg just realised how insanely busy the next few months are, no way can I host a party. Does anyone want to see this film/go for a drink instead”? I don’t think it’s that deep!

Whosthetabbynow · Yesterday 19:19

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 15:53

@Whosthetabbynow , I always left as well - I never gave up hope though even after being burned again and again - there are more of us out there, but the darker energies sap us before we can find each other, maybe even actively intervene to make sure we don't find our own tribe. Are you happy having given up?

Recently, this thought has come to me - if all good people kept away , and most of them do, as they do not naturally aspire to positions of dominance, control over a group and leadership - it's only the bad people who end up as the natural leaders - and doesn't that affect the whole of humanity?

I feel free and unburdened. I look back at various situations I got myself into and think “how did I survive? Was that really me?” But you mask to avoid worsening the situation. Something I learned is this: stay away from anyone who can’t take a “no”. Massive red flag.
