Narcissist female friend in close group - An Empath's ongoing tale

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 15:39

Hi everyone, sorry for the long post. This may not sound like a big problem but those who have abusive family and friends know how difficult it is to break the cycle and to not lose the all the other mutual friends/family in the process. I have spent the whole afternoon crying everyday the past few days.

We are a group of about 7 ladies who know each very well, the kids are friends and the dads/husbands all know each other well too. Holidays have been had together over the last 4-5 years , plenty of meet ups etc.

It started with 2 ppl being neighbor's, the third being another school mum, the fourth being same church and so on, but now all know each other on an equal footing supposedly.

I was the one who invested a lot originally in bringing the group together as a cohesive unit as well.

I have been in a similar group before this one , which was in my 30s (I am now in 40s), pre-pandemic and there was one person who was a narc there too and made my life miserable, I eventually had to leave the group , as she had built up flying monkeys etc and I had to leave or die of exhaustion trying to be better.

Fast-forward to this group that started five-ish years ago, and bang same thing, one dominant narc, and I find myself doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the group over the last year esp. and getting very little respect from the narc who (of course) is the self appointed leader of the group, I thought i was handling it better but all I did really was stick my head in the sand, and hope it magically got better. I think she is teaching the others to disrespect me too, and there is some laughter behind my back, but I think the others are confused and misled by her a lot.

After educating myself a lot in the past 6 months with Dr Ramani videos, other books on narcissism , I did manage to learn a few things. I want to not run away this time - with all my soul , I want to solve this riddle.

Things I learnt -

  1. Yes Narcs exist. I have to fight myself to believe this , as I am religious and constantly trying to do good and believing that it is what others want to do in return as well. I am constantly naively shocked when people behave nastily despite giving my head a wobble all the time. They walk amongst us, call them narcs, or dark triad, or evil, or selfish. Accepting this made me so sad I was in denial for so long
  2. Narcs target empaths
  3. Narcs hold a lot of envy in them. Empaths naturally care and enjoy human company, they make many things look easy that don't come easily or naturally to narcs

I tried one last time after another 4 years of subtle undermining, targetting , bullying by my 'friend' narc - to make her understand how i felt - overworked (doing all the organising, paying at times, hosting, meal prep for meet ups etc , a lot of the time). Even though I know appealing to their empathy is supposed to never work.

Her answer basically was people who were in financial problems or other depressions in the group needed me to carry their load as well. She spoke for them, she was deciding who would do what and made it subtly clear to me that no one had time for 'anyone being difficult'.

She had decided that some people would need to contribute very little in terms of money time and effort and still be appreciated a lot, and vice versa - and that she held the power to decide this. She has built one or two of the vulnerable 'follow the leader, just want a good time' types into her supporters by now.

I feel God or the universe is giving me the same life lesson again and again, and till I learn and own the situation and deal with it, it will not go away.

I have as of last week left the phone group that the 8 of us were on - and have created a new one for an event I always do annually at mine - and have excluded the narc and one more person I felt did not bring anything positive to my life and was in the group to take / not share or build genuine friendships (and hence usually went along with the narc's ideas).

I had originally included the narc as well, for the event but after leaving the main standing WhatsApp group, I removed her from this event one , and had said I would add her to 'another group for similar event I was co planning' that had other people that were in the same charity community thing she was involved in.

It made not much sense, as obviously she would want to be in the one our friends were in and perhaps additionally in the other one not in lieu of. But for the first time I have tried the non truthful, manipulative, subtle, 'words don't match actions' , word salad, approach that narcs take - as apart from greyrocking, I think fighting them with their own games is the only way to extricate without open conflict. I am trying to play her own game back at her now.

So for the first time I have done something to detach from only her while retaining the other friends.

Please advise if have been in similar, what can I expect next from her? from those of you with lived experience ? Narcs do not give up power easily and she has bled me dry with hundreds of little paper cuts in the past 4 years so will she let me go peacefully?, especially knowing I havent run away per se from the whole group in fear, but intend to still have most of the others over in two months time - or do I now face the narc rage for excluding her? God help me.

I have to do this without hurting the DC network with the other DC's + I do not want this breaking up the dad's weekly dates or my family getting victimised in retribution and exclusion targetted at me if that makes sense.

Please help..... I am actually very scared ....I have never stood up to a narc in my whole adult life, I just run away when I can and start over

Are you sure you are an empath? I'm not sure from your posts

Stop doing what you are told to do and do what you WANT to do, regardless of the outcome

what I want to do is to tell her she is mean, rude, horrible to me, and to STFU and go away

I can't do that

OP posts:
Pippin2017 · Yesterday 16:37

I felt exhausted just reading that. Spend time with people who enhance your life, avoid people who don't. Step back from the organising and let someone else do it for a while.

TBH, empaths, especially self diagnosed ones, can be just as annoying as narcissists.

Have you not got a job? You seem to have too much time for building dramas in your head.

I do and I feel exhausted and drained all the time

Stop using words like narc and empath and just be friends with people you like, less friendly to those you don't, and take some time to yourself when you feel socially burnt out.
People are just people trying to get along with their lives same as you.

Edited

This. The labels are exhausting.

Just see how it goes - if the others turn up to your new cut down group then all will be fine. If they feel they’re disrespecting the queen bee by doing that then and either make excuses not to come or let her know about the event, then you know it’s not going to work out and will have to move on.

I get where you’re coming from, the queen bee bullying the people pleaser is nothing new.

Every time when we are well in to the evening, wine inside me and I am happy and effulgent and we have set the worlds to right 3 or 4 of us who love a good laugh that is when she says

'weren't you going to organise a barbeque.....'

'Isn't your special anniversary due, are you having us over....'

And I am pretty much ' I Loves yws all, of course we're going tooooo partttty...'
even when happy party me is saying that, the other half of me is thinking 'no no no no no pls shut up...' to myself

I'm afraid some of your OP makes you sound very unempathetic.

Also, if this keeps happening, one might reasonably conclude that you are the common denominator. What with all this friendship-group forming, anyway? Why are you doing this, repeatedly? Do you want people to love you and thank you....as a "narc" might?

AlphabetBird · Yesterday 16:41

I’ve always found self described empaths to put themselves in the centre of the universe. They imagine all actions are intended to cause their super sensitive special selves pain or injury.

Have you a bit of a main character problem OP?

Thanks everyone

I think it all just boils down to , how do I walk away from this bullying dominating controlling woman without affecting my friendships with the other 6?

Your options are-

Build separate friendships with the other 6, and not her.

Exclude yourself from the group by not attending events that she is at.

Or, this is what I would do, tell her in plain language how you feel about how she treats you, and then put up with her politely at group events but don't see her separately.

What you can't do is decide how everyone else treats her. That is deeply unkind ( and possibly manipulative and narcissistic ).

No I genuinely keep longing with all my heart for a good female friend group...where we love each other and support each other, and are kind to each other...

When I realise this is not it, by then the kids and the families are all entangled too

You can't control other people's actions! Gosh, who's the narc now?!

If you want to walk away from the woman, walk away. What other people do as a consequence is outside your control. You can't make them come with you.

You have a very weird understanding of friendship, I think.

Yes agree, this is exactly what I am going for this past week, and holding my breath hoping all the others don't hate me now.......they can still meet her, just not at my events, as for mutual events, I can speak politely then but won't go to any she organises

True, just hoping all of them dont cut me off now .....apart from how sad I would feel, my DC are really close to some of theirs

Unfortunately, so are the dads

But neither of those are horrible or unreasonable things to ask. You are entirely free to say no politely.

Or say yes and then change your mind.

As for ”how do I walk away from this bullying dominating controlling woman without affecting my friendships with the other 6?”

The problem is the other six like her.

So you can only walk away from the group and see the other individually. You can’t keep the group or make them choose.

If it’s an established group of 7, has been for some time, and all the husbands and kids are friends too, then if you try and carve her out YOU are going to look like the bitch.

Honestly there is no way to start a new group with the other 5 and not her - most of them probably like her and don’t see that she’s doing anything wrong.

I suggest you grow a backbone and stop organising / hosting more than you want to.

Eg in your example of “weren’t you going to have a BBQ” I’d be inclined to say “we’ve been at mine a lot, why don’t you do the next one?” Or “how about a picnic and we’ll all bring something ?”

Just stop being a pushover

Oh boy. I think THIS is your problem.

You can't manufacture these things, and it's not on to rope your husband and children into your schemes, either.

Good female friendships are formed out of respect, shared interests, common history, mutual support, appreciation. They're not Insta-type snapshots of women laughing together, half drunk on wine at dinner parties.

I think you need to go right back to the drawing board and work on thinking about friendship, companionship, what you are to people as much as what they are to you, boundaries and respect. And let your husband and children forge their own friendships! You've got them roped into all your drama and it's totally unfair on them.

MyThreeWords · Yesterday 16:46

Good lord there is a lot of over-analysing here. Also a lot of hostile labelling - "call them narcs, or dark triad, or evil, or selfish." I suspect selfish would be the fairest label, if any at all, which we are all capable of. It is not helpful to go beyond that and start categorising people on the basis of some cod YouTube psychology.

The reality seems to be that the dynamics of the group gives a lot of influence and approval to a woman you don't like. It is as simple as that.

Don't get hung up on problematising her. Work on yourself. For one thing, stop taking on work that you don't want to do. Or, if you feel compelled by your personality to step in and organise, then don't make a martyr of yourself for that choice.

And stop calling yourself an 'empath'. Anyone who uses that daft term for themself immediately sounds self-absorbed and actually not very empathic at all.

Just socialise with the people you like and stop resenting people for being different from how you want them to be, or for liking the 'dominant' friend that you dislike.

mcmooberry · Yesterday 16:48

She sounds like a total taker but the others are just as bad for going along with it and not stepping up to host/helping with costs when you host. Hope your event without her and the other woman goes well. However, you have been seething in your head and maybe needed to be more direct well before now.

Roastiesarethebestbit · Yesterday 16:49

All the people I have known who call them elves ‘empaths’ are massively self centred main character types , who make every situation all about ‘ME ME ME’.

In the real world I don't think adult friendship groups exist like that OP because life, jobs, partners, children etc get in the way.

In the nicest possible way it sounds like you've been overdosing on shmaltzy wholesome US TV programmes.

If your friends are being a PITA, you need new friends.

DewDropsAndCobWebs · Yesterday 16:50

You can be empathetic, but you are not an empath.
You are not more or less special in your emotions than anyone else.
You may be sensitive to rejection, that's a thing.
This putting labels on everything and everyone, without clinical assessments, makes you sound unhinged.

Just hang out with those you like, say no thank you to the others, and you will be fine. No running away, or fighting, needed.

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 16:52

MyDarlingRose · Yesterday 16:28

I can’t advise because it would require you to be rather underhand and manipulative in response to everyone in the group over time. You need to undermine her while also making the group see that she’s the unreasonable one and that would take a fine tightrope balance. You’ve gone the open way which is admirable but without laying the groundwork with the others (comments here and there, pointing out things she’s doing, getting them to pull away from her towards you) it will make you look like the person suddenly setting off the bomb for no good reason. You needed to make people view you sympathetically first.

Thank you, your post is extremely useful - I have come to the same conclusion that she does not deserve straightforward information , as she always manipulates, uses the info, and lies all the time, and shrugs it off when I catch her in the lie - she also acts shifty then the next meet up acts completely different

I want to be underhanded and manipulative only with HER - I would be so proud if I could pull that off - it would be like a lamb learning to walk. I could not enjoy it but I think I could do it with focus

I did not actually put her in a group for the charity thing ! I said I would but I didnt! I made DAMN SURE my words did NOT match my actions. AND I HOPE TO GOD, she feels confused like I always do at her pulling all this on me , all the time.

I am not going to create a new event for her and the charity thing, I am not inviting her to anything, But I said I would as I wanted to play her at her own game

This feels new and scary. Usual me would have said the truth cried and ran
