Narcissist female friend in close group - An Empath's ongoing tale

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 15:39

Hi everyone, sorry for the long post. This may not sound like a big problem but those who have abusive family and friends know how difficult it is to break the cycle and to not lose the all the other mutual friends/family in the process. I have spent the whole afternoon crying everyday the past few days.

We are a group of about 7 ladies who know each very well, the kids are friends and the dads/husbands all know each other well too. Holidays have been had together over the last 4-5 years , plenty of meet ups etc.

It started with 2 ppl being neighbor's, the third being another school mum, the fourth being same church and so on, but now all know each other on an equal footing supposedly.

I was the one who invested a lot originally in bringing the group together as a cohesive unit as well.

I have been in a similar group before this one , which was in my 30s (I am now in 40s), pre-pandemic and there was one person who was a narc there too and made my life miserable, I eventually had to leave the group , as she had built up flying monkeys etc and I had to leave or die of exhaustion trying to be better.

Fast-forward to this group that started five-ish years ago, and bang same thing, one dominant narc, and I find myself doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the group over the last year esp. and getting very little respect from the narc who (of course) is the self appointed leader of the group, I thought i was handling it better but all I did really was stick my head in the sand, and hope it magically got better. I think she is teaching the others to disrespect me too, and there is some laughter behind my back, but I think the others are confused and misled by her a lot.

After educating myself a lot in the past 6 months with Dr Ramani videos, other books on narcissism , I did manage to learn a few things. I want to not run away this time - with all my soul , I want to solve this riddle.

Things I learnt -

  1. Yes Narcs exist. I have to fight myself to believe this , as I am religious and constantly trying to do good and believing that it is what others want to do in return as well. I am constantly naively shocked when people behave nastily despite giving my head a wobble all the time. They walk amongst us, call them narcs, or dark triad, or evil, or selfish. Accepting this made me so sad I was in denial for so long
  2. Narcs target empaths
  3. Narcs hold a lot of envy in them. Empaths naturally care and enjoy human company, they make many things look easy that don't come easily or naturally to narcs

I tried one last time after another 4 years of subtle undermining, targetting , bullying by my 'friend' narc - to make her understand how i felt - overworked (doing all the organising, paying at times, hosting, meal prep for meet ups etc , a lot of the time). Even though I know appealing to their empathy is supposed to never work.

Her answer basically was people who were in financial problems or other depressions in the group needed me to carry their load as well. She spoke for them, she was deciding who would do what and made it subtly clear to me that no one had time for 'anyone being difficult'.

She had decided that some people would need to contribute very little in terms of money time and effort and still be appreciated a lot, and vice versa - and that she held the power to decide this. She has built one or two of the vulnerable 'follow the leader, just want a good time' types into her supporters by now.

I feel God or the universe is giving me the same life lesson again and again, and till I learn and own the situation and deal with it, it will not go away.

I have as of last week left the phone group that the 8 of us were on - and have created a new one for an event I always do annually at mine - and have excluded the narc and one more person I felt did not bring anything positive to my life and was in the group to take / not share or build genuine friendships (and hence usually went along with the narc's ideas).

I had originally included the narc as well, for the event but after leaving the main standing WhatsApp group, I removed her from this event one , and had said I would add her to 'another group for similar event I was co planning' that had other people that were in the same charity community thing she was involved in.

It made not much sense, as obviously she would want to be in the one our friends were in and perhaps additionally in the other one not in lieu of. But for the first time I have tried the non truthful, manipulative, subtle, 'words don't match actions' , word salad, approach that narcs take - as apart from greyrocking, I think fighting them with their own games is the only way to extricate without open conflict. I am trying to play her own game back at her now.

So for the first time I have done something to detach from only her while retaining the other friends.

Please advise if have been in similar, what can I expect next from her? from those of you with lived experience ? Narcs do not give up power easily and she has bled me dry with hundreds of little paper cuts in the past 4 years so will she let me go peacefully?, especially knowing I havent run away per se from the whole group in fear, but intend to still have most of the others over in two months time - or do I now face the narc rage for excluding her? God help me.

I have to do this without hurting the DC network with the other DC's + I do not want this breaking up the dad's weekly dates or my family getting victimised in retribution and exclusion targetted at me if that makes sense.

Please help..... I am actually very scared ....I have never stood up to a narc in my whole adult life, I just run away when I can and start over

You need to just say no….?

Ask everyone to BYOB as you’re only providing soft drinks and do a pot luck style meal with everyone bringing a dish to share? My friends happily say, we’re providing salads, sauce and buns, can we ask you all to bring some meats for the BBQ. it’s really not a huge deal. If you can’t stand that, just meet up for coffees/lunches and pay for yourself or split the bill. Much cheaper than hosting and solves the issue - those that can’t afford to come don’t go or you do cheaper meet ups like coffee and a walk.

As a host myself, I assume, when friends host that they like to do it, can afford to do it and wouldn’t if they couldn’t. I don’t expect to attend a BBQ/lunch, have someone buy in food and wine (I’d always bring something with me mind!) then hear afterwards that they actually hated hosting and the cost of it. So just don’t do it then? I didn’t ask to be invited or arrange it for you? I find it very odd.

You’ve made yourself the villain by hosting an event and making a group chat without her and one other person. Now YOU look controlling. If it’s for a charity, let her come? You need to stop over thinking and just host what you want to host but not expect to just be able to cut 2 people out an 8 person group and have everyone support you….

Deadlykitten · Yesterday 17:38

you sound a little unhinged if i’m honest, why are you not just enjoying your time with your friends and doing what you want to do and not doing the things you don’t want to do

Boomer55 · Yesterday 17:39

Narcs and empaths are both boring self obsessed people.

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 17:42

To the poster who asked what the atmosphere on the new group is

Two people talked normally when I made it, normal chatter, so that has been reassuring that was two days ago.

Two or three people are silent and gauging, one said thanks for the add

I added 2 new people who arent from our group but I have been meaning to spend more time with lately as I like them having met them at various places - and they were effusive with the ooh sounds like a great fun event, thanks so much for the add

If you didn’t believe you were an empath (=self obsessed emotion vulture who believes they’re better than everyone else) would you find it easier to just drop the rope?

Empath is a self-defined term which means bugger all other than you are incredibly difficult to deal with because you make everything about you.

Remove the label. Accept you’re not as important in the universe as you thought you were, and relax and enjoy relationships in whatever form is possible in between everyone’s busy lives and capabilities. You cannot curate friendships. They are based on honesty and mutual respect. Nobody respects anyone in this scenario. Just pick someone you like and go for a drink with them.

As I believe the youth say: it’s just not that deep.

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 17:44

if anyone asks, I will say she is part of list 2

There is no list 2

This might be my first lie ever - that I have not immediately confessed to within the day

Why? Why tie yourself up in this ridiculous subterfuge? If people care about each other they don’t act like either of you. These are not friendships.

Nah, this is silly.

@PinkPanthreess you sound very lacking in self-awareness. If you’re a christian surely you should be a) praying for this woman and rising above her behaviour and b) clearly and calmly communicating to her that you’re not going to be hosting XYZ event?

You sound like you don’t communicate your needs directly, expect people to guess them, get upset when they don’t, and then fixate on how ‘horrible’ they are. It’s all rather teenage and tedious and the fact this has happened to you twice suggests you may be the problem.

But what would happen then? I would have no friends if I wasn't doing most of it possibly and that is terrifying to start again

if these people only want to hang out with you because you’re organising things and paying for stuff, they aren’t your friends

Friendships shouldn’t be be such hard work

Lararoft · Yesterday 17:48

So OP; basically in my friendships, if a friend has proved themselves to be not a good friend then I would stop hanging out with them. But this has been a very rare occurrence as I have a good awareness for bitchy types & don’t make friends easily unless I really know I can trust someone.
So I don’t have a huge group of friends, I prefer a small group (3 ‘best’ mates) that often all meet up with me plus certain other friends I see individually. We pay for ourselves as we’re mainly on similar incomes; we don’t involve partners or children but that’s because we don’t all have them. I know that eg one of my best mates has some good ‘couple friends’ but they share a totally different dynamic that I just wouldn’t fit into.
My friends are lovely women and I feel they do enhance my life, although with one person in particular I try to help her with some issues she is having but that’s fine.
If I start dating a decent man, I will expect him to enhance my life too and not bring any stress or drama.
I don’t really understand what the terms narc & empath mean to be honest but I think your biggest issue is that you have got a large & complex interwoven set of people that you socialise with - but are they actually true friends really? Because friends don’t use you financially or put on you to always organise things. They don’t bitch about you.
This woman you say is a narc, well she just sounds like a bit of a cow? Could you not just say to the others; “I’m sick of X as she’s being a total cow towards me with her behaviour so I’m not inviting her to our next event”.,, then when it gets back to X and she confronts you, just say, “well you’ve been very unpleasant and I no longer consider you a friend”. She will obviously then cry and play the victim, some will take her side & some will take your side but that’s life really. At least you will have dealt with things.
So stop wasting your time in work & out of work being so stressed & miserable about this situation and constantly over analysing it. Life really is too short.

No I definitely told her I don't want to pull all the weight, and she got all cold, and made the others get cold too

I don't really believe this thread is for real anymore, but suppose it is...

You can't honestly believe you're an empathetic. This is ALL about you, your fears, your dramas, your desires. You're completely unable to understand how or why any of your friends act the way they do. It's not empathy. It's utterly self absorbed.

Can you see that?

if this is the case, then she’s not actually your friend and nor are they, and you’d be better off without them.

when you say they ‘went cold’ what did they do/say exactly?

I think this is absolutely for real because I recognise the poster who had another long thread about her agony of empathy in a series of equally ridiculous scenarios and refused to take any advice or learn anything from the responses.

If your friendship group only exists because you host then they don't see you as a friend, they see you as a venue. These are not good enough friends for you to waste any more of your time on, it's as simple as that - be friendly, but not friends.

LilacPuffin · Yesterday 17:51

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 17:48

No, she didn't "make" anyone do anything. Stop investing her with so much power. She's just a person like anyone else. Maybe she has a strong personality, but she can't force your friends to do a thing that they don't actually agree to do.

AgnesX · Yesterday 17:54

I don't really get this empath stuff. If you're that sensitive to the dynamics of this group I'd quietly disengage and only stay in touch those I was truly friends with.

thelegacyofhope · Yesterday 17:56

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 16:36

what I want to do is to tell her she is mean, rude, horrible to me, and to STFU and go away

See, now your writing style and punctuation is completely different from your first posts and title. If you have used AI perhaps this is why people here are replying the way they do. Because the wording and everything becomes way too dramatic and it feels like something is off. A small thing is written like a good vs evil film script.

Well don’t then. Go and rob a bank if it makes you feel better.

My own personal experience with narcissists is that they have a tendency to accuse other people of being narcissists. There’s very little more narcissistic than believing you are an empath.
