Narcissist female friend in close group - An Empath's ongoing tale

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 15:39

Hi everyone, sorry for the long post. This may not sound like a big problem but those who have abusive family and friends know how difficult it is to break the cycle and to not lose the all the other mutual friends/family in the process. I have spent the whole afternoon crying everyday the past few days.

We are a group of about 7 ladies who know each very well, the kids are friends and the dads/husbands all know each other well too. Holidays have been had together over the last 4-5 years , plenty of meet ups etc.

It started with 2 ppl being neighbor's, the third being another school mum, the fourth being same church and so on, but now all know each other on an equal footing supposedly.

I was the one who invested a lot originally in bringing the group together as a cohesive unit as well.

I have been in a similar group before this one , which was in my 30s (I am now in 40s), pre-pandemic and there was one person who was a narc there too and made my life miserable, I eventually had to leave the group , as she had built up flying monkeys etc and I had to leave or die of exhaustion trying to be better.

Fast-forward to this group that started five-ish years ago, and bang same thing, one dominant narc, and I find myself doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the group over the last year esp. and getting very little respect from the narc who (of course) is the self appointed leader of the group, I thought i was handling it better but all I did really was stick my head in the sand, and hope it magically got better. I think she is teaching the others to disrespect me too, and there is some laughter behind my back, but I think the others are confused and misled by her a lot.

After educating myself a lot in the past 6 months with Dr Ramani videos, other books on narcissism , I did manage to learn a few things. I want to not run away this time - with all my soul , I want to solve this riddle.

Things I learnt -

  1. Yes Narcs exist. I have to fight myself to believe this , as I am religious and constantly trying to do good and believing that it is what others want to do in return as well. I am constantly naively shocked when people behave nastily despite giving my head a wobble all the time. They walk amongst us, call them narcs, or dark triad, or evil, or selfish. Accepting this made me so sad I was in denial for so long
  2. Narcs target empaths
  3. Narcs hold a lot of envy in them. Empaths naturally care and enjoy human company, they make many things look easy that don't come easily or naturally to narcs

I tried one last time after another 4 years of subtle undermining, targetting , bullying by my 'friend' narc - to make her understand how i felt - overworked (doing all the organising, paying at times, hosting, meal prep for meet ups etc , a lot of the time). Even though I know appealing to their empathy is supposed to never work.

Her answer basically was people who were in financial problems or other depressions in the group needed me to carry their load as well. She spoke for them, she was deciding who would do what and made it subtly clear to me that no one had time for 'anyone being difficult'.

She had decided that some people would need to contribute very little in terms of money time and effort and still be appreciated a lot, and vice versa - and that she held the power to decide this. She has built one or two of the vulnerable 'follow the leader, just want a good time' types into her supporters by now.

I feel God or the universe is giving me the same life lesson again and again, and till I learn and own the situation and deal with it, it will not go away.

I have as of last week left the phone group that the 8 of us were on - and have created a new one for an event I always do annually at mine - and have excluded the narc and one more person I felt did not bring anything positive to my life and was in the group to take / not share or build genuine friendships (and hence usually went along with the narc's ideas).

I had originally included the narc as well, for the event but after leaving the main standing WhatsApp group, I removed her from this event one , and had said I would add her to 'another group for similar event I was co planning' that had other people that were in the same charity community thing she was involved in.

It made not much sense, as obviously she would want to be in the one our friends were in and perhaps additionally in the other one not in lieu of. But for the first time I have tried the non truthful, manipulative, subtle, 'words don't match actions' , word salad, approach that narcs take - as apart from greyrocking, I think fighting them with their own games is the only way to extricate without open conflict. I am trying to play her own game back at her now.

So for the first time I have done something to detach from only her while retaining the other friends.

Please advise if have been in similar, what can I expect next from her? from those of you with lived experience ? Narcs do not give up power easily and she has bled me dry with hundreds of little paper cuts in the past 4 years so will she let me go peacefully?, especially knowing I havent run away per se from the whole group in fear, but intend to still have most of the others over in two months time - or do I now face the narc rage for excluding her? God help me.

I have to do this without hurting the DC network with the other DC's + I do not want this breaking up the dad's weekly dates or my family getting victimised in retribution and exclusion targetted at me if that makes sense.

Please help..... I am actually very scared ....I have never stood up to a narc in my whole adult life, I just run away when I can and start over

Thank you, your post is extremely useful - I have come to the same conclusion that she does not deserve straightforward information , as she always manipulates, uses the info, and lies all the time, and shrugs it off when I catch her in the lie - she also acts shifty then the next meet up acts completely different

I want to be underhanded and manipulative only with HER - I would be so proud if I could pull that off - it would be like a lamb learning to walk. I could not enjoy it but I think I could do it with focus

I did not actually put her in a group for the charity thing ! I said I would but I didnt! I made DAMN SURE my words did NOT match my actions. AND I HOPE TO GOD, she feels confused like I always do at her pulling all this on me , all the time.

I am not going to create a new event for her and the charity thing, I am not inviting her to anything, But I said I would as I wanted to play her at her own game

This feels new and scary. Usual me would have said the truth cried and ran

I think a lot of this should be your “inside voice” @PinkPanthreess especially if you want others to view you as the empath you see yourself as.

malloryknox123 · Yesterday 16:58

you seem very certain that you know this woman’s motives, that she’s controlling how others perceive you, and anyone who sides with her is a flying monkey but you are also using manipulation yourself to manage the situation.

i can’t help but wonder if you recognise your own narcissistic tendencies in her?

If it’s an established group of 7, has been for some time, and all the husbands and kids are friends too, then if you try and carve her out YOU are going to look like the bitch.

Honestly there is no way to start a new group with the other 5 and not her - most of them probably like her and don’t see that she’s doing anything wrong.

I suggest you grow a backbone and stop organising / hosting more than you want to.

Eg in your example of “weren’t you going to have a BBQ” I’d be inclined to say “we’ve been at mine a lot, why don’t you do the next one?” Or “how about a picnic and we’ll all bring something ?”

Just stop being a pushover

This is what I am worried

So the interesting dynamic here is - she's trying to mould it so that either she hosts or I do , and not any of the others - when she hosts, she gets the rest of them to bring something or come and help - but when I host, the default seems to be I get it catered, last time I tried to switch from catered to pot luck - there seemed to be a cold silence and then I back tracked

But I think without her toxic influence, the others do want to to cut me more slack too, she won't let me get close to them beyond a point - yet despite that I really have a lot of fun with a few of them, apart from this.....

”narc” “empath”. Jesus. You don’t like her and you have binned her out of the chat. You definitely needed to do that as you don’t like her so well done on that score. Will the other ladies follow to your new group or shun you in solidarity with her? Only time will tell!

BumblebeesandPaperbags · Yesterday 17:04

For someone working pretty hard to present themselves as good and blameless and especially sensitive I find it very interesting thst the post you described as “extremely useful” is the one outlining a campaign of underhand, manipulative and destructive behaviour.

None of which is necessary as far as I can see.

It’s also absolutely not going to achieve your goal of being Queen Bee.

I am trying this now as of sunday , as I am wondering if that is the only way?

Its very new to me

I've never done anything like this before though, I would rather climb everest

A very large part of me just wants to do as I am told when she tells me to , instead of this

Tbh it comes across like you don't set firm boundaries in your life and people take advantage. Have firm lines in the sand that you don't deviate from and others will have to either respect them or get lost

Next time someone starts manipulating you into hosting a party at your house you simply say no. Don't go into justification beyond "I don't want to". If others ask you to foot the bill for others simply don't pay beyond what you originally planned to pay for.

If you lose friends, so be it. You'll find out who your true friends are in the process and will have a much easier life.

what I want to do is to tell her she is mean, rude, horrible to me, and to STFU and go away

I can't do that

What you mean is that you're too fearful to say that to her face. This does not make you an empath

Your manipulative and controlling characteristics and your poor me stance indicates to me that you're a covert/vulnerable narcissist

HTH

JHITRM77 · Yesterday 17:10

In the nicest possible way you just have to put your big girl pants on, nobody gets to decide how you spend your money, she doesn't get to decide you host and pay for everything, just say no, that's all you need to do. 💐

Thank you but your last line was what I truly believed and even now I desperately want to believe. I just can't afford to anymore

It exists.

Learn to walk away. You are way to invested in trying to stand up to 'narcs' or whatever she is. Forget trying to hold groups of people together, just be friends with whoever you want to be friends with and leave the rest to do the same. Perhaps consider therapy to work out why you are dramatising this to such an extent. Reading to books to learn about narcissm so that you can tackle the narcissist is not healthy - and I'm saying this as a counsellor - even I don't do that. You are focusing too much time and effort on diagnosing and labelling people, inlcuding yourself.

Changingforthisone66 · Yesterday 17:11

I'm sorry but you sound insufferable. Gain some self awareness and distance yourself from people you don't get along with.

SnapAndFartAllDayLong · Yesterday 17:11

Have the other friends you added to new WA group commented on the new group etc? What have they said about new group chat etc? Or has it been totally ignored?

ChaToilLeam · Yesterday 17:14

Please stop all the "empath" nonsense and overanalysis. If someone pisses you off, either set a boundary or walk away. Simple as that. The drama must be exhausting.

SpottyAlpaca · Yesterday 17:15

dairydebris · Yesterday 15:50

Stop using words like narc and empath and just be friends with people you like, less friendly to those you don't, and take some time to yourself when you feel socially burnt out.
People are just people trying to get along with their lives same as you.

Agree completely. And using phrases such as ‘she had built up flying monkeys etc’ makes you sound mentally unstable.

Every time when we are well in to the evening, wine inside me and I am happy and effulgent and we have set the worlds to right 3 or 4 of us who love a good laugh that is when she says

'weren't you going to organise a barbeque.....'

'Isn't your special anniversary due, are you having us over....'

And I am pretty much ' I Loves yws all, of course we're going tooooo partttty...'
even when happy party me is saying that, the other half of me is thinking 'no no no no no pls shut up...' to myself

You need better boundaries and to stop people pleasing. That's half your battle there...

Why are you spending all this energy on her? Why are you sinking to her level? I very much doubt this is going to have positive long-term benefits for you when you realise you've compromised your principles/integrity. And for what? Step away from the drama. Say no. Have better boundaries. The people in the group who are genuinely your friends will remain so. The others? There's no loss if they fall away.

LilacPuffin · Yesterday 17:25

My advice: stop incorporating pop psychology jargon into your understanding of human relationships. Narc, empath, flying monkeys, etc. This shorthand may be useful in a limited way, but it is reductive and can't really explain the nuances of real personalities and interactions.

And step away from AI.

cherryicecreamisnice · Yesterday 17:26

I agree it’s probably a mistake to call yourself an empath but I think the comments on here are giving OP an unnecessarily hard time. If this bully/narc or whatever you want to call them was so easily dismissed, the OP wouldn’t be reaching out. I say this because I’ve been grey rocking a narc for about ten years, I can’t cut her out because all my friends think she’s great. A couple of mates have seen her bark at me, they laugh nervously but it must be mystifying to them, I’ve tried talking about it but people say just avoid her, which doesn’t address the hurt. I confront her on text occasionally, she goes quiet and then creeps back in again.
OP I think jealousy does play a part, they might see you as capable and popular and some people like to destroy that.

It sounds like your personalities just clash a bit and you have decided that you don't like her - that is fine, we can't get on with everyone all of the time. In a group, there will always be some people you like more than others. As a result of your feelings of irritation for her, you've decided that she is a narc (whatever that means) and you look out for any behaviour that might possibly tick the narc box as per your self help book, and then you can shout bingo. In turn, you, as self proclaimed empath, have decided your are unable to stand up to her because she's a narc - when actually, she's just a person in the group you don't gel with as much as some of the others and she annoys you. You've made this far, far more complicated than it needed to be.

Grown women just don't have these Insta type friendship groups or the kind that you see on US series where everyone spends hours talking about their feelings and how other people's words and actions make them feel. They just don't. Most of us have busy lives, with jobs, family, hobbies, a friendship here and a friendship there - there is no need or time for endless drama, and certainly no need for tears. Just use your words - "no, hosting is a bit much for me at the moment, I'm really busy with work and too knackered, let's go out for dinner - when suits everyone?"

Take a step back from the group, but without announcing your departure like a train, or posting 'snakes in the grass everywhere' type posts on SM. Find other things to do with your time that bring you happiness and peace.
