Narcissist female friend in close group - An Empath's ongoing tale

Hi everyone, sorry for the long post. This may not sound like a big problem but those who have abusive family and friends know how difficult it is to break the cycle and to not lose the all the other mutual friends/family in the process. I have spent the whole afternoon crying everyday the past few days.

We are a group of about 7 ladies who know each very well, the kids are friends and the dads/husbands all know each other well too. Holidays have been had together over the last 4-5 years , plenty of meet ups etc.

It started with 2 ppl being neighbor's, the third being another school mum, the fourth being same church and so on, but now all know each other on an equal footing supposedly.

I was the one who invested a lot originally in bringing the group together as a cohesive unit as well.

I have been in a similar group before this one , which was in my 30s (I am now in 40s), pre-pandemic and there was one person who was a narc there too and made my life miserable, I eventually had to leave the group , as she had built up flying monkeys etc and I had to leave or die of exhaustion trying to be better.

Fast-forward to this group that started five-ish years ago, and bang same thing, one dominant narc, and I find myself doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the group over the last year esp. and getting very little respect from the narc who (of course) is the self appointed leader of the group, I thought i was handling it better but all I did really was stick my head in the sand, and hope it magically got better. I think she is teaching the others to disrespect me too, and there is some laughter behind my back, but I think the others are confused and misled by her a lot.

After educating myself a lot in the past 6 months with Dr Ramani videos, other books on narcissism , I did manage to learn a few things. I want to not run away this time - with all my soul , I want to solve this riddle.

Things I learnt -

  1. Yes Narcs exist. I have to fight myself to believe this , as I am religious and constantly trying to do good and believing that it is what others want to do in return as well. I am constantly naively shocked when people behave nastily despite giving my head a wobble all the time. They walk amongst us, call them narcs, or dark triad, or evil, or selfish. Accepting this made me so sad I was in denial for so long
  2. Narcs target empaths
  3. Narcs hold a lot of envy in them. Empaths naturally care and enjoy human company, they make many things look easy that don't come easily or naturally to narcs

I tried one last time after another 4 years of subtle undermining, targetting , bullying by my 'friend' narc - to make her understand how i felt - overworked (doing all the organising, paying at times, hosting, meal prep for meet ups etc , a lot of the time). Even though I know appealing to their empathy is supposed to never work.

Her answer basically was people who were in financial problems or other depressions in the group needed me to carry their load as well. She spoke for them, she was deciding who would do what and made it subtly clear to me that no one had time for 'anyone being difficult'.

She had decided that some people would need to contribute very little in terms of money time and effort and still be appreciated a lot, and vice versa - and that she held the power to decide this. She has built one or two of the vulnerable 'follow the leader, just want a good time' types into her supporters by now.

I feel God or the universe is giving me the same life lesson again and again, and till I learn and own the situation and deal with it, it will not go away.

I have as of last week left the phone group that the 8 of us were on - and have created a new one for an event I always do annually at mine - and have excluded the narc and one more person I felt did not bring anything positive to my life and was in the group to take / not share or build genuine friendships (and hence usually went along with the narc's ideas).

I had originally included the narc as well, for the event but after leaving the main standing WhatsApp group, I removed her from this event one , and had said I would add her to 'another group for similar event I was co planning' that had other people that were in the same charity community thing she was involved in.

It made not much sense, as obviously she would want to be in the one our friends were in and perhaps additionally in the other one not in lieu of. But for the first time I have tried the non truthful, manipulative, subtle, 'words don't match actions' , word salad, approach that narcs take - as apart from greyrocking, I think fighting them with their own games is the only way to extricate without open conflict. I am trying to play her own game back at her now.

So for the first time I have done something to detach from only her while retaining the other friends.

Please advise if have been in similar, what can I expect next from her? from those of you with lived experience ? Narcs do not give up power easily and she has bled me dry with hundreds of little paper cuts in the past 4 years so will she let me go peacefully?, especially knowing I havent run away per se from the whole group in fear, but intend to still have most of the others over in two months time - or do I now face the narc rage for excluding her? God help me.

I have to do this without hurting the DC network with the other DC's + I do not want this breaking up the dad's weekly dates or my family getting victimised in retribution and exclusion targetted at me if that makes sense.

Please help..... I am actually very scared ....I have never stood up to a narc in my whole adult life, I just run away when I can and start over

Wow. Just step away. I’m sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Whosthetabbynow · Yesterday 15:46

Last narc I was involved with was 16 years at work. I almost had a breakdown. Now I keep anyone I don’t know at arm’s length. Not interested. Fingers burned too often.

Wow. Just step away. I’m sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Most of the times it does. But this is what kept me stuck for so many years believing this. I would not believe there was not a middle ground - i.e., I would constantly try to get us to the middle, it never happens with narcs and I attract them like bees to a pot of free honey.

I am not going to change who I am - an empath and inclined to help people and take more on - I just won't have myself channelised by narcs around us anymore and have my abundance directed according to their deeming where it should go

Stop using words like narc and empath and just be friends with people you like, less friendly to those you don't, and take some time to yourself when you feel socially burnt out.
People are just people trying to get along with their lives same as you.

@Whosthetabbynow , I always left as well - I never gave up hope though even after being burned again and again - there are more of us out there, but the darker energies sap us before we can find each other, maybe even actively intervene to make sure we don't find our own tribe. Are you happy having given up?

Recently, this thought has come to me - if all good people kept away , and most of them do, as they do not naturally aspire to positions of dominance, control over a group and leadership - it's only the bad people who end up as the natural leaders - and doesn't that affect the whole of humanity?

Thank you but your last line was what I truly believed and even now I desperately want to believe. I just can't afford to anymore

It exists.

Wow. I expect the rest of the group are sick of the unspoken seething hostility between you both despite you no ‘confrontation’ to date. I expect you have just handed her the bullets to shoot you with because others won’t appreciate your divisive actions no matter what she has said or done. The others will now exclude you - she won’t need to do a thing. You walked straight into that trap.

I assume you are depicting yourself as a kindly empath? Anyone I know who has called themselves that are unhinged. Your preoccupation and self righteousness makes me think vulnerable narcissist.

RheneasAndSkarloey · Yesterday 15:58

So you have left the WhatsApp group, made another group excluding two of the original group, and created an event that these two are not invited to? And this is the second group you have engineered, the previous one having also been destroyed by a "narc"? And being a "narc" involves what? And your role as the person who brought this group together has involved doing a lot of the organising, and you resent this?

I think you have overdone the amateur psychology calling people "narcs".

In every group there are organisers and there are joiners. I am a joiner. Love my friends, enjoy meeting up, terrible at organising. My friend who doesn't work does most of the heavy lifting around organising. I hope she doesn't think I am a narc.

I am deeply wary of anyone who calls themself an "empath" too.

Step away from the analysis and labelling and just decide if you are happy being the organiser in your friend group or not, without damning other people. It all sounds like such bloody hard work.

Grey rock and serious boundaries. If she deems that you should pay/do more in place of others, just simply offer what you feel is reasonable and leave it at that. The gap can stay gapped or others can bridge. Basically don’t over function for the sake of others as it leaves you open to this type of manipulation.

Empaths spend decades stuck wondering whether it is them

I have no more left to give her to her Lola ....she wanted all the meet ups and events at my place as the biggest space, she wanted to tell me how much to meal prep, and I should pack leftovers for her, she wants the best wine money can buy and makes me end up spending for all this....

I asked her outright and she said it is because the others earn less ....I work full time and I am exhausted, I have explained I can't carry all the weight but she said some of the others are vulnerable so I must

Literally this sounds like a fake post even to me, how can anyone be this stupid, but I am scared to cut her off and lose everyone in one go.

The way you've written this, it sounds like The Forces of Evil versus The Forces of Good. I'm not sure it's doing you any good to think about it this way.

The group's probably about to blow up now anyway, now that you've created a new WhatsApp excluding two of them.

4timesthefun · Yesterday 16:02

Sorry, OP. Your description of yourself as an empath and your uncritical self view suggest that you might in fact be the bigger problem in the group, and the reason people are aligning with the other person is because you are very hard work. I’d try taking a step back and just being friendly to the group but not overly invested. You don’t need this person to be your best friend.

Recently, finally another friend had volunteered to organise and pay and I was so looking forward to the relaxing lunch planned - but narc told the friend she should use the money to go with her family for lunch isntead and asked me to do it at my home....... I did push back, but finally ended up that we went to coffee instead and the friend didnt pay as narc had told her not to

Gosh what a lot of angst. Why do you keep bringing people together to form a cohesive group? Just be friends with people you like. Ignore those you don’t. When you meddle, like trying to get your friends to also be friends with each other, things go wrong. Because people don’t really want you trying to create lovely group friendships. Stop. You’re trying to get people into being a lovely cohesive group that has you at the centre. It’s manipulative.

She sounds like she is taking the mick but I don't get why she's a narc or you an empath. Just propose in the group that you turn take hosting, or just don't organise another get together, or propose having a bring along picnic, or going to a pizza place. It doesn't require all the bandwidth or analysis you are giving it. It's a bossy boots in a friend's group, that's all.

I have to make it sound that dramatic to myself, as every nerve in me is SCREAMING to give in and invite her to the event, and get over myself

I am so exhausted reminding myself I am allowed to take some space too

A person who actively enjoys taking the mick for its own sake needs a label, otherwise people like me can't comprehend that such a being would exist

You may just need to distance yourself from the entire group.

I wouldn't give her any ammunition bu excluding her from a group. They love reactions. I would pretend like everyrhing is fine and not give a reaction.

Yes, evil exists amongst us. I find that those whonattract narcissists very often had a covert narcisstic parents.

The psalms work by the way...praying to expose evil, injustice, lies etc

Morethanadecade · Yesterday 16:09

You sound very difficult and unpleasant, I’m afraid. I wouldn’t want to know anyone who describes themselves as an empath and other people as narcs.

HinzKunz · Yesterday 16:10

Weird! Nobody is forcing you to host and look after depressed people. ‚I’m busy/ill/not available Deborah. Let’s all meet in town for coffee instead‘
no need for deleting off wtatsapp and creating new groups. Makes you look dramatic

PinkPanthreess · Yesterday 16:11

I have individually spoken to three others in the group, they all agree in principle turns should be taken and those who don't without a good reason contribute anything at all should step up at some point

Only narc said the current status quo should continue

Therefore I have made a new group excluding her , instead of just leaving all 'our' friends to her and vanishing like I did 10 years ago with another group. Why should I slink away in the night?

Its lonely but you need to make excuses and distance yourself.
