Yes, me too and It feels like it's been orchestrated. I feel for anybody living in or around London, if it's replicated here. I know Burnham has stressed he is taking seriously threats to our own MPs but how do you stop these lone nutters from going rogue? As with the discussion around special measures for murdering police officers, I think the same needs to happen with politicians. It doesn't help with the whipped up hysteria around certain MPs like Farage. You only have to look on here to see he's mentioned every day. There's a difference between holding politicians to account and losing it, irrationally. I believe if Farage was killed, there would be jubilation but that's where we are at.

Yes, the establishment including the government and BBC want anyone on the right of politics shut down. They do everything in their power to discredit them.

Discussing Farage is "hysteria"? Of course he is mentioned on here every day on political threads, along with Badenoch and Burnham.

I find it very concerning that posters on MN seem almost to be hoping for unrest in the UK. I think they will be disappointed.

The majority of people don't want political violence, so I think you are wrong in the main. There was no jubilation on MN when Ann Widdecombe was murdered, was there?

They certainly do and even on MN. I was reading a thread last night about people being seemingly less intelligent - the usual arrogant tone - and a couple of posts in somebody said anybody voting Reform/Restore being an example of low intelligence. It's this awful intolerance that's become commonplace among the left; it's like a virus. That's why this rioting is buried under the pretence of normal dissatisfaction with capitalism.

Yes unfortunately there was. Not as much as Charlie Kirk’s death but still some.

I agree with the op the rhetoric around Farage is heightened and I’m not surprised a violent male will see it as a cause to action. The perpetrator will be taking in that rhetoric online.

No and I know there would be the opposite if the same happened to Farage. There would be lots of I don't condone this that and other, but... Nobody is hoping for unrest in the UK unless you're talking about the 3 years of Palestinian hate marches. They've certainly had the desired result.

I don't see much discrediting of Badenoch? Criticism yes.

As for Farage, he discredits himself. Same goes for Reform as a whole. Its representatives discredit themselves and the party.

You probably won’t see it as you’ve made up your mind already.

Unfortunately there’s a lot online which has led to Ann Widdecombe’s death.

The party gets more scrutiny than the others combined. If it was going to fold up it would have done so by now. They remain a legitimate political option and no amount of fascism is going to change that - even murdering its members.

Scrutiny of Reform is facism?

No but the intolerance is. Shouting down/attacking and telling canvassers to get out of constituencies is one shining example.

If you are talking about the Holborn and St Pancras incident, the canvassers in that case were Restore not Reform.

Well they are normally lumped in together aren't they. Anyway, back to Ann Widdecombe...

Do you think the online rhetoric is fine as is wrt non Labour parties? Would you change any of it or is it all fine in your view.

Even if it leads to violence, as we’ve seen with Ann Widdecombe

What sort of rhetoric do you mean? Can you give an example.

Harsh criticism and scrutiny of whether parties/policies are racist etc. is fair game (for example the debate around whether the Greens' policy is anti-semitic). Death threats, threats of violence towards individual politicians or their supporters, obviously not.

I've always considered myself to be centre-left-wing if that makes any sense.

For many years I've held the belief that extreme left-wing and extreme right-wing are no different from one another.

My dad came from a country that suffered under fascists and then under people who called themselves communists. The communists at least provided free health care (to an extent) and universal education.

However, the brutality was there under both - though the communists made more of an effort to hide it - and in both cases, those at the top expended their efforts on staying at the top, building a personality cult and using that to control people.

I'm blethering on in this way to underline that I don't support Reform in any way and I think that Anne Widdecombe was misguided in allying herself with them - and I can't recall agreeing with her political views when she was a Conservative.

But - my God - she didn't deserve what happened to her and I find her death upsetting. Part of it is probably because I can relate to her, being an older woman living on my own now.

Those thugs calling themselves 'left-wing' and claiming to defend the weak are no bloody different from the blackshirts.

I don't know what we do about it and I'm hesitating even to post on here since I'm aware of how inarticulate I'm being.

I'll confess that I'm one of those who laughed when Farage had milkshake thrown over him. I was wrong.

I cannot stand the man - I really cannot. The problem is that the liquid could have been anything and if we justify doing that to Farage, we're justifying the ill treatment of and violence towards politicians in general.

I remember the furore when Prescott punched the arsehole who threw the egg at him. I recall watching the footage with my parents and my mum saying "When he felt the egg trickling down his face, he must have thought it was blood," and I'm convinced that she was right.

When Blair made his "Oh, it was just John..." comment, he was being a coward. Prescott had every right to defend himself from assault.

Right. I'm going to shut up now. I'm just very upset about what happened to Anne Widdecombe and now to the Australian lady.

Not inarticulate at all, brilliant post. 👏

We should all feel this, whatever our politics.

The Conservatives are not really on the right. During their 14 years in power they increased immigration by several million despite a clear direction from the electorate to say they wanted it reduced.

They also gave a free pass to the grooming gangs. A right wing party would have come down on that like a tonne of bricks.

Yep, can't argue with any of that, as a Tory.

FB and X are horrible and really are full of bots. Very few hate posts get removed.
