Housekeeper playing music- aibu?

NoMusicPlease · 22/10/2026 16:24

I live in a large house on a farm. I have a housekeeper who comes in each day between 10-6.

Today I was in the garden and she drove up to the house and parked outside. I could hear her music which annoyed me because I moved to the country for peace and quiet. It wasn't blasting but I don't want to hear any music while I'm outside.

I told her she's not allowed to play music while she's driving on the farm and she seemed a bit upset and was much quieter than normal. I think that might have to do with her personal circumstances because she's currently getting divorced.

Was I being unreasonable?

Yabu and this is about the most ridiculous first world problem I’ve ever read on here.

I actually think this is a wind-up

Or a reverse, no one can be this unkind and self absorbed in real life

NoMusicPlease · Yesterday 14:48

Just wanted to update you that she's already feeling much better. I popped over with a flask of soup for her and she said the pain is 95% gone 🥳🥳

I told her not to rush back to work - she can have as long as she needs off with full pay.

You have no idea what I've been through. You're using me as a punching bag right now and that's really not okay.

I suggest it's time for you to step away from this thread.

But you used her as a punching bag, it's been sorted now, neither of you are well so don't upset each other anymore, what she is paid and what benefits she gets is of no interest.

These half term posts are so tedious. I wish you had to verify adult accounts with a credit card or something

That was quick it usually takes a bit longer for an infected wisdom tooth to calm down.

I'm 42 years old. I was born in May 1985.

She was lucky, I had swelling and pain for ages, it's not even been 24 hours for her. She still might be doped up though. It's very soft, gentle foods for at least a week.

She had it playing for a couple of minutes while she was gathering her things.

I think she should have turned it off as soon as she stopped the car.

You are officially a grump.

I think you should apologise.

I thought you were going to say she had the radio on in your house while she worked and you were there too, and I was going to say no, you are not BU at all. I have had this with a painter and would have said something but for the fact he wasn't with us for long, but it was really intrusive.

But even then I said nothing as it was a few days only.

A couple of minutes you ought to be able to withstand.

I have an appointment to see her on Thursday next week! It's absolutely grim living like this and it's apparently turning me into an utterly unreasonable cow.

Ah that explains a lot OP. But yes, it was U and I am glad you apologised. I don't think you need to do flowers and chocolates: a sincere apology is a lovely thing by itself.

Um, because I’m American? It wasn’t 4 a.m. here. You’re British, which is why I asked why you were awake at 4 a.m. arguing with strangers on the internet. I also never said anything about my UK cleaners considering I’ve never lived in the UK and never will. And where exactly did I pretend to be confused about the pound sign? I said I didn’t know how to type one on my computer. I never claimed using $ was a typo either. It’s a currency symbol and you knew perfectly well what I meant. You seem awfully confident for someone who’s managed to get literally every detail wrong

Edited

A ha. So you have no experience of employing cleaners in the UK after all. That makes sense.

A quick search tells me that the average hourly rate of a cleaner in the USA is $33 which converts to…around £25. So LESS than the OP is paying. Don’t forget that the statutory employment rights and benefits in the USA are poor compared to the UK.

I’m still not sure whether you were talking in USD in your first post or GBP but forgot to change the symbol. But by your original reckoning, OP’s housekeeper should be earning at least £120k per annum. Which is insane. I spent 6 years at vet school and don’t earn anything near that. Oh, and I spent my first year after qualifying working 70 hour weeks in the USA on $27k.

I didn't until my accident but now I permanently think I'm a year older than I am! 🙃

It would provide a lot of context.

I don't particularly care what the average cleaner earns in the US and if you'd actually read my posts you'd know I grew up in one of the most affluent towns in Illinois if not the entire country where my parents were paying $100 for three hours of cleaning two decades ago so considering the OP is presumably pretty wealthy herself given that she has a house that apparently needs eight hours of cleaning every single day, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect her to pay her housekeeper more than my parents were paying their cleaner 20 years ago.

And lol, what exactly were you doing to earn only $27k a year working 70 hours a wee, mopping floors cause unless this 60 years ago or some sort of veterinary internship that salary makes absolutely no sense for a qualified vet or veterinary technician and why on earth would a US veterinary clinic hire someone from the UK for a clearly unskilled position in the first place? Like, I'm genuinely curious what year this supposedly happened and what your actual job was, because you're leaving out some pretty important details.

And do you have any idea what wealthy people pay their live-in nannies, housekeepers, and personal assistants cause six-figure salaries for private household staff are hardly unheard of and once again, this woman is doing far more than just cleaning. She spends eight hours a day at the OP's house, does laundry, helps with groceries, keeps her company, and drives her places. She's essentially a housekeeper, companion, and personal assistant rolled into one so no, I don't think £120k is some completely unimaginable salary for someone providing that level of personal service to a wealthy individual.

Why are you continuing to criticise the OP after indicating you understood?

As someone familiar with both economies, it sounds like you are just looking to be right even after apologising.
