Housekeeper playing music- aibu?

NoMusicPlease · 22/10/2026 16:24

I live in a large house on a farm. I have a housekeeper who comes in each day between 10-6.

Today I was in the garden and she drove up to the house and parked outside. I could hear her music which annoyed me because I moved to the country for peace and quiet. It wasn't blasting but I don't want to hear any music while I'm outside.

I told her she's not allowed to play music while she's driving on the farm and she seemed a bit upset and was much quieter than normal. I think that might have to do with her personal circumstances because she's currently getting divorced.

Was I being unreasonable?

Nothing, and if you're going to use your ear surgery as some sort of get-out-of-jail-free card for treating people like shit, just wait until you hear what I've been dealing with.

I genuinely think you need some real life support. https://www.samaritans.org/

I'm really sorry you've had troubles but you have no idea what I've been through in the last several years. You seem to have it out for me for some reason and I'm not sure why, but if it makes you feel better I've had a hell of a lot of heartache and physical issues myself.

But please, for your own sake, find someone to talk to in real life. You are so angry and it's not healthy.

Talk to someone in real life. I’m genuinely not being snarky. You seem so angry. Your reaction to this is really disproportionate. The OP has apologised and made amends to the lady.

Listen, if you'd been through half of what I have you might have a shorter fuse for internt nonsense too and yes, I already talk to someone but thanks for the unsolicited concern. I'll have you know that I'm perfectly pleasant in real life, I just don't feel obligated to sugarcoat my opinions for strangers on Mumsnet. and while it's great that the OP apologized, she was still being a massive bitch in the first place which is literally what she came here asking about. An apology doesn't retroactively make her behavior acceptable.

Oh Op, you must ask MN to delete the thread now. Either that or remove it from your feed as the crazy posters don’t bother reading updates and they just keep responding to the original post. Just ignore them.

Thank you!

I didn't like myself very much earlier. I'm not generally a nasty person but properly snapped and I'm quite ashamed of that.

All I can say in my defense is that if had a really bad pain day and was feeling pretty horrible so the music was just the last straw.

Really weird that you think you are somehow better despite being totally vile to another human. At least OP had the balls to be rude in person

You have exactly zero idea what the op has been through yet you keep being utterly unpleasant to her. Can you just give it a rest now please?

Lol, she had the balls to be rude to someone she employs over FOUR MINUTES of music playing in her own car? Wow, how incredibly brave of her. Nothing says courage quite like picking on someone whose paycheck and housing you control. 💀

You have no idea what I've been through. You're using me as a punching bag right now and that's really not okay.

I suggest it's time for you to step away from this thread.

None of us know what others are going through, though do we? I’m sorry if you’ve had a terrible time.

Something that’s on my mind at the moment is someone I know who’s my age who was diagnosed and died of cancer within four weeks. Her funeral is next week.

A lovely man in my village got killed in an accident this summer. These things just cements in my mind not to sweat the small stuff. The OP was unreasonable, admitted it and made amends. There we are then.

Keeps me company, mostly. General cleaning, though anything heavy I get a specialist company in (the oven, for example), does laundry, helps me to put groceries away, takes me out in the car on the days I'm feeling well too want to go out.

I was in a horrible car crash in 2024 and am now paralyzed from the chest down. I'm still adapting and figuring out how to do things. My dentist is a close family friend now because she rebuilt my mouth after it was smashed to bits. I was also pregnant at the time and lost the baby. I also had a total nervous breakdown and was severely anxious, have PTSD and agoraphobia.

I didn't really want to share all that but I feel like people are judging me so it's probably time for full disclosure.

Better than hiding behind being an anonymous internet bully. She said sorry. You are just being horrible because you can.

@pinck this is the person you're being a bully to- are you going to stop now?

Being in constant pain can push anybody over the edge - I think you’ve recognised you were being unreasonable & have rectified the situation.
aside from that have you thought about using some decent earplugs in the interim while you’re struggling? I have a chronic illness & sometimes noise can be painful & when my son was born I became a bit bonkers as he seemed to cry all the time. I used ear plugs & the crying was so loud I could still hear what was going on but it just took the edge off & helped me control my emotions better. Or maybe try some loop earplugs. My husband likes to use these at kids parties & they work a treat! Not a miracle fix but maybe help your sanity while you’re trying to get your treatment sorted. Sounds like you’ve been through a horrific time- sending well wishes X

Oh, give me a break, are we seriously playing the medical trauma Olympics now cause I'm 37 and in the past 6 years I've significant vision loss (managed to regain it in one eye), an MS diagnosis, a 9mm kidney stone, sepsis and multiple broken bones, and that's not even close to everything.

And just THREE MONTHS AGO, I had a heart attack caused by a spontaneous tear in my LAD (the widow maker). I barely had any chest pain and almost didn't even go to the ER because I thought it was just more MS bullshit. Turns out I also have fibromuscular dysplasia and a brain aneurysm and then, despite not having high cholesterol, I developed an almost completely blocked coronary artery because of how the tear healed and needed a stent placed earlier this month and then, two days before that procedure, I fell and broke my ankle so I'm STILL recovering from the stent while trying to attend cardiac rehab in a walking boot.

I honestly don't know how or why I'm still here sometimes and every time I think I've finally made it through something, another medical disaster comes along so please spare me the lecture about suffering and the irony of you trying to shame me with someone else's suffering while knowing absolutely nothing about mine is astounding. You might want to climb down off that moral high horse before you fall off it. 💀

I'm really sorry that happened to you, OP, and I think people would have been a lot more understanding if you'd shared some of that context in the first place. I certainly would have been. I completely understand why you wouldn't want to disclose such personal and traumatic experiences to strangers on the internet, but your original post essentially came across as "I have an enormous house and was rude to my cleaner for playing music in her car. Should I feel bad?" That's a very different picture from someone who's still recovering from a horrific accident, dealing with PTSD, and relying on their housekeeper for everyday assistance and companionship. I still don't think the way you handled the music was fair, but I have a much better understanding of where you were coming from now and I'm sorry for everything you've been through.

Obviously the car music would stop once she’s arrived at your house.

My music doesn’t stop until I lock the car…
and if my employer told me what I can or can’t do in my own time, I wouldn’t be their employee for long!

She had it playing for a couple of minutes while she was gathering her things.

I think she should have turned it off as soon as she stopped the car.

You sound horrible. I hope this is made up. Margo Ledbetter was a comedy character as was hyacinth bouquet (bucket) they were funny because they were grotesque imitations of snobs.
In real life they’d be obnoxious.
you should apologise, say you were having a off day and you should never have tried to control what she does in the privacy of her own vehicle.
you should grovel unless you’re happy to lose her
