FOUR out of FIVE new jobs went to foreigners in the past decade, new report reveals

Four in five jobs created over the past decade have been taken by migrants.

Of the 3.7million new roles recorded under the PAYE system since 2014, just 734,000 were taken by UK nationals, a think-tank has found.

EU citizens accounted for 408,000 jobs, while the vast majority – 2.5million – went to migrants from the rest of the world, the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) said, with most of the surge coming since the pandemic.

The think-tank warned that while employers gained 'unprecedented access to overseas labour', taxpayers have been forced to absorb the cost of millions of Britons being 'written off' and left on benefits.

As the number of migrant workers soared by 2.1million from 2020, the number of people receiving out-of-work benefits across the UK rose by 2.3million.

More than one in four (29 per cent) of the jobs that went to migrant workers from outside Europe were in health and social work.

So much for British jobs for British people!

Do we think this is due to Brits being 'too lazy to work' or because of a combination of employers wanting to pay lower wages and offer worse working conditions to migrants/preferring to employ migrants/not wanting to invest in training Brits/diversity hire tick boxes etc.

But a lot of UK nationals don't want to work in social care.

And we have 1 million young people who are NEETS and mostly on benefits. Apparently many of them are too "anxious" to work.

I was surprised when in the UK recently that there were quite a few people who were clearly from India/Pakistan (I mean based on their accents, not just assuming based on appearance) working in souvenir shops. No judgement either way, but it did make me wonder!

You do know people with UK citizenship can have forrin accents yes?

I don’t know about Americans but I’ve experienced for myself how some/many English people in particular look down on Australians and South Africans.

I mean some people are universally dickheads. The point I was making was the headline is designed to dog whistle about brown immigrants when non EU can mean may other nations

Speaking for myself only I wouldn't look down on a South African/Australian. But I have experienced a South African in the UK sort of thinking they were better than my (English as it happened) colleague who they assumed was an immigrant. It was a bit of a "hang on a minute situation". Not that there is anything wrong with being an immigrant from South Africa or anywhere but I don't think they had more right to be in the country than someone born there just because if skin colour. I do think that person felt looked down on for being grouped in the immigrant category with brown immigrants. BUT they were an exception not the rule.

workinghardhardlyworking · 14/10/2026 20:11

I thought quite a few EU migrants had left the UK since Brexit. Those figures would include people like me, who haven't lived in the UK for the better part of a decade.

FlyingCatGirl · 14/10/2026 20:31

The reality is that we have an absolutely screwed jobs market in this country! We have low or unskilled vacancy gaps that have no career potential so they don't get filled. We have a ton of jobs that expect a ridiculous assortment of experience of skills, qualifications and experience that few people can live up to and for not that much more money than minimum wage.

People can't afford to retire until the state pension kicks in at 67, nobody wants to train or develop anybody and it leaves so many people in limbo! And if or when you do get that job you live, you get made redundant as businesses are closing hand over fist in this country!

And for anybody that's disabled or develops a chronic condition, it's frequently hell to get an employer to agree to even minor adjustments to a role.

I'm H&S by trade, I saw a Junior HSE position being advertised recently, working pattern is ten days on and 4 off and working hours 12 noon to 10pm! Who wants to live that life? And the amount of experience you were required to have that role did not match up with it being junior! And forget seeing anyone you live with or having a social life! This is what people are up against plus the fact that many jobs are 6 & 12 month temp contracts now!

Two years if you are here under a marriage visa.

Is that true? I thought that was 5 years, after allowed to apply to remain? Plus spousal visa means that the spouse must earn a set amount of money to pay for their spouse. That's what happened with someone I knew who is English but brought her partner from overseas.

Exactly. And when you check their sources they are quoting their own "math". Interesting.

We have too many people in the UK who don't want to work full stop! My next door neighbour, 4 year old daughter (now goes to school), she and her new fella don't work, father of the child doesn't work. Live in a council supplied home, doing nothing other than taxi's to the shops, uber eat deliveries and going on the tiles every weekend.
Apart from the amount of money they're costing taxpayers, I find it utterly depressing that this is all their life is at aged about 25ish. Why does nobody want to live a bit anymore?

And of course I didn’t mean that all English people (or even the majority!) think they are superior - just that I’ve encountered it a number of times. I’ve not met every English person anyway 😉

I did indeed! But your accent generally shows where you grew up. Mine (also) doesn’t match my nationality. I mentioned it in the context of people coming to the UK to work in relatively unskilled jobs.

I don’t think that all the people I encountered in souvenir shops were born Brits who grew up elsewhere.

Oh for sure. I’ve encountered it often enough myself - people complaining about immigrants and then, seeing my raised eyebrows, saying, “I didn’t mean you!”

And the sad thing is, they really didn’t mean me - they meant brown Muslims and expected me to agree.

It’s horrible to see our young people left on benefits because they cannot find work.
My dd who finished her A level with great grades is struggling to find anything and has gone for hundreds of jobs.
She is polite, hardworking and drives yet has been rejected from retail, catering and various other roles despite being flexible and open minded about what she does.
its soul destroying and leaves the question what are employers looking for?
Unfortunately I do believe the employment market is being taken over by foreign nationals who tend to like to employ their own.
Our young people have no opportunities in their own country it’s depressing.

I should imagine a vast majority of those with families will be claiming top up benefits like housing benefit, universal credit, child benefit and also using services like the NHS, schools, etc while paying very little in.

We are also paying the same benefits to Brits who can't find a job.

You do the Math.

The key word here is "imagine".
Some evidence wouldn't go amiss.

5MinuteArgument · 14/10/2026 21:42

I think there's a whole load of issues leading to this. But building an economic scrapheap of British people, especially young people, while importing mainly low waged workers from abroad is an absolute disaster for this country.

It means we have massive pressure on housing, all our services, water, sewage, and it means our wildlife and natural environment are depleted and diminished. All while a mental health crisis develops, partly caused by people being unemployed.

But never mind. Diversity innit.

British jobs for British people!

Who said that? Sounds like something from League of Gentlemen.

Employers want the best candidates for their roles.

No, cheapest.

Yes, I think this does happen. The consequences of young British people being pushed out of their own labour market will be dire for this country.

The Centre for Social Justice is basically the policy factory for the Tory Party. I wouldn't pay too much attention. They caused the current stagnant economy.

5MinuteArgument · 14/10/2026 22:32

Campanulaceae · 14/10/2026 18:51

There have recently been £5000 incentives for businesses to hire someone from India, which costs businesses less overall because they can pay them less. From a purely business decision, it makes sense. It's not right, but it makes sense.

And don't get me started on employees on "skilled worker" visas working at kebab shops.

I think there's a lot of scams going on like this. Yes, we do have a problem with work ethic amongst some people but I think there's things like this which are making it harder for UK people to be recruited.

HelpMyBlackLabradorVotesReform · 15/10/2026 08:38

No real surprise. Many Brits have got too fat and lazy to be employable. Cut the amounts paid in benefits and they will soon get off their arses and get a job job.

BIossomtoes · 15/10/2026 08:40

They won’t if they’re not employable. Who’s going to give them a job or even a job job?

Well, I use various approaches to lobby and canvas but yes, I enjoy talking to people face to face and I don't need to save time.

Use social media - reach 8 million people
Speak face to face - maybe 30 people a day.

Still it's good that you enjoy it. Whatever it is.

5MinuteArgument · 15/10/2026 09:38

Skippydoodle · 14/10/2026 21:46

Yes, and it was Gordon Brown, Labour prime minister, that said we should have British jobs for British workers. This used to be something people on the left believed in. Now they seem to be quite happy for us to have millions of our own people festering on the dole while importing millions from abroad which has led to pressure on all our services and has caused housing costs to sky-rocket.

Crazy situation.
