FOUR out of FIVE new jobs went to foreigners in the past decade, new report reveals

Four in five jobs created over the past decade have been taken by migrants.

Of the 3.7million new roles recorded under the PAYE system since 2014, just 734,000 were taken by UK nationals, a think-tank has found.

EU citizens accounted for 408,000 jobs, while the vast majority – 2.5million – went to migrants from the rest of the world, the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) said, with most of the surge coming since the pandemic.

The think-tank warned that while employers gained 'unprecedented access to overseas labour', taxpayers have been forced to absorb the cost of millions of Britons being 'written off' and left on benefits.

As the number of migrant workers soared by 2.1million from 2020, the number of people receiving out-of-work benefits across the UK rose by 2.3million.

More than one in four (29 per cent) of the jobs that went to migrant workers from outside Europe were in health and social work.

So much for British jobs for British people!

Do we think this is due to Brits being 'too lazy to work' or because of a combination of employers wanting to pay lower wages and offer worse working conditions to migrants/preferring to employ migrants/not wanting to invest in training Brits/diversity hire tick boxes etc.

How reliable is this as a data source?

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · 14/10/2026 17:10

If these statistics are correct, that sounds like an employer/ worker's rights issue and not an immigtarion one.

YABU to start a thread seemingly for the sole purpose of stirring up hate and division, literally the day after the Chief of MI5 made a statement specifically noting the dangers of anti migrant rhetoric.

Wage suppression, more likely to accept poorer pay and conditions.

Employers like the threat of a revokable visa. Less likely to argue or even be aware of employment law/working rights

Lazy government preferring not to invest in its own people.

Greedy and lazy employers preferring not to train anyone at all - more profit that way.

Care staff with visas being expected to work 36 hours in a row knowing that if they refuse, they could lose their visa.

Iain Duncan Smith is the Chairman of the CSJ.
Iain Duncan Smith took a leading role in the Brexit Leave campaign.
He's been a Conservative MP throughout the whole period this report covers.
The Conservatives were in power for the majority of the period covered in this report.

The pandemic coincided with Brexit coming into effect.
Since then 2.5 million jobs to migrants from the rest of the world.

EU workers were net contributors.

titchy · 14/10/2026 17:11

Worth chucking the report through AI with a prompt asking about credibility and bias btw….

But hang on - I thought they all came here to not work , claim benefits and hang around doing nothing. So which is it or are you just stirring up hatred .

This :)

The Math .... hmmm.

OK I'm British but say Math because it's the correct way.

Mathmatics - the s is on the end not in the middle.

But let's detract from the topic of my OP.

Seems people on MN don't want to discuss this, I wonder why?

Makes sense my DC struggled to get jobs over the last few years anyway.

Every parent should be concerned about the effect this will have on their children's futures.

I should imagine a vast majority of those with families will be claiming top up benefits like housing benefit, universal credit, child benefit and also using services like the NHS, schools, etc while paying very little in.

We are also paying the same benefits to Brits who can't find a job.

You do the Math.

So are they not all fighting age single men then...?

willingtolearn · 14/10/2026 17:12

Rules around who can bring dependants, and what salary is required to do so, limitations/costs etc.

I've recently come across the idea of 'greedy jobs' - employers who are asking for the moon on a stick for absolutely minimum they can get away with paying. It seems to be increasing in a employer's market where they can pay less and less and demand more and more.

Anyone seen the mumsnet posts of people finding it hard to get jobs or their childlren here in the UK??

friedaklein · 14/10/2026 17:12

What are your DCs qualifications and what do they want to do?

WhyDontU · 14/10/2026 17:13

To answer your questions for where I work...
Do we think this is due to Brits being 'too lazy to work'... no
because of a combination of employers wanting to pay lower wages and offer worse working conditions to migrants... no
preferring to employ migrants/not wanting to invest in training Brits/diversity hire tick boxes... no

The past three hires have all been from abroad and we have had to wait for them to get visas (skilled worker) before they can start which took ages. They were the best candidates for the jobs and that's why they were offered.

However, there were in all cases people who were interviewed who did not require new visas (not sure if 'foreign' or not) who were also judged to have been employable after interview and would have been offered the jobs if the first choices turned them down. I personally also applied for an internal role in a different team and was second choice (but employable) with the role being offered to a candidate from abroad who requires a visa to take it up.

I know I will be told it's just sour grapes but this does make me a bit uncomfortable tbh. Not because I am against hiring from abroad full stop at all. I work in a very multi cultural workplace and that's fine. I am not convinced (as is shown by the interviewed candidates that we deem employable at the end of the process) that we need to be always employing from abroad when we do.

Data source is correct. Interpretation is not, and limitations of data not explicitly stated. E.g nationality is based on nationality at the point someone applied for an NI number, maybe as a 16 year old child of immigrants. If they subsequently acquire UK citizenship this isn’t reflected in the figures.

cityliving99 · 14/10/2026 17:13

maggiecate · 14/10/2026 17:10

Various reasons:
Aging population - more people are retiring than there are school leavers entering the workforce. We can’t train enough British People for British Jobs because there aren’t enough of them.
Migrant workers can go where the jobs are - UK residents who were born here or are long term settled tend to be more tied to their local area by families, owning or renting their home and not wanting to give it up etc. Migrant workers move to where the work is. British People in the South West won’t give up their British House for a British Job in the North East.
Migrant workers are more likely to be younger, have more flex around hours, willing to take on short term, seasonal roles, and be physically healthy and thus able to do jobs that require a lot of activity.
and yes, they’re willing to do the shitty jobs that British people aren’t. You can say it’s because employers won’t pay rates that attract British Workers but British Customers will be quick to complain when prices go up. Margins in most areas that employ low paid migrant workers are slim to negligible.

We have millions of young people out of work.
They should be encouraged to go for these jobs.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 14/10/2026 17:13

This is Iain Duncan Smith’s baby. You would expect right wing views.

I think new roles is probably not what they are. Many will be taking the place of retired workers. It does suggest the Brits are not wanting the roles or are too expensive and need a lot more training. The obvious employment area is health and if we want a semi functioning health service, should we not have employed them? The 1 million neets almost certainly could not do these roles.

willingtolearn · 14/10/2026 17:14

@DorsetKnobBiscuit The majority were Non-EU

CraftyNavySeal · 14/10/2026 17:15

There are Brits in Australia working on farms and down mines so it’s not laziness. People will work hard if it means they can save for their future, that’s why people come to the uk to work. They will grind for a few years then go home and buy a house.

In the uk you can’t go home, the grind has no end. There’s no point scrimping a saving if a house is still 10x your salary.

FunPartyIdeas · 14/10/2026 17:15

Perhaps they are willing to do the jobs others aren't prepared to do?

willingtolearn · 14/10/2026 17:15

I'm fed up of the 'Brits don't want these roles' - they do.

They just don't get a look in or aren't prepared to live in an HMO, working double shifts to eke out a basic existence.

Why don't we want more than this for our children?

VaughanMorgan · 14/10/2026 17:15

Bot/ stirrer/ journalist? The word Foreigner is a give away as to the intention of this post.
Love the League of Gentlemen comment! 😂
And @titchy, well said.

You do realise that these stats are legal migrants - they may well have come here for the job specifically as there were no suitable candidates from the UK.
If this is a reform stop the boats bashing thread then it fails

The Chief of MI5 should have have a word with the media, and the organisation which published the report, and tell them off?

willingtolearn · 14/10/2026 17:18

It's not the lack of wanting - it's the lack of access and the expense of funding training for the roles.

In terms of caring work - you used to be provided with a car from a pool, get paid for your training, get your uniform for free and were paid travel. You had regular hours and regular clients.

Now - you have to fund your own car, which many young people can't do - and it's not uncommon to be charged for uniform/training.

The employer does not have to prove that they could not find someone currently resident here who could do the job before they ask to have someone from overseas.
