FOUR out of FIVE new jobs went to foreigners in the past decade, new report reveals

Four in five jobs created over the past decade have been taken by migrants.

Of the 3.7million new roles recorded under the PAYE system since 2014, just 734,000 were taken by UK nationals, a think-tank has found.

EU citizens accounted for 408,000 jobs, while the vast majority – 2.5million – went to migrants from the rest of the world, the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) said, with most of the surge coming since the pandemic.

The think-tank warned that while employers gained 'unprecedented access to overseas labour', taxpayers have been forced to absorb the cost of millions of Britons being 'written off' and left on benefits.

As the number of migrant workers soared by 2.1million from 2020, the number of people receiving out-of-work benefits across the UK rose by 2.3million.

More than one in four (29 per cent) of the jobs that went to migrant workers from outside Europe were in health and social work.

So much for British jobs for British people!

Do we think this is due to Brits being 'too lazy to work' or because of a combination of employers wanting to pay lower wages and offer worse working conditions to migrants/preferring to employ migrants/not wanting to invest in training Brits/diversity hire tick boxes etc.

Raise the pay and reduce the load on people working in care - and you would no doubt be able to recruite more than immigrants.

An awful lot of people think families (read: female relatives) should do it
for free, so I’d be surprised if there was
much public support for the idea.

You could save time by using social media for canvassing and lobbying rather than 'being out' doing it. But you don't believe that exists so do enjoy your door knocking and pamphlets.

Well, I use various approaches to lobby and canvas but yes, I enjoy talking to people face to face and I don't need to save time.

I would dispute those figures, or at least question heavily on how they came up with them.

the social justice party is a right wing think tank probably biased against immigrants.

@Bridgertonisbest agreed. But don’t let your common sense and critical thinking overtake the thread now will you.

lazyarse123 · 14/10/2026 18:35

I worked in retail up to 2 years ago and the last 3 times we recruited we got 2 English applicants and about 20 foreign applicants. My son is a mechanic and they are always trying to recruit and rarely get English applicants. I don't know why it's happening but you can't give people a job if they don't apply.

It won't happen but don't complain over the quality. Only badly trained or not at all trained immigrants work for a pay that low with the current conditions in care.

How reliable is this as a data source?

Well it was on the front page of the Daily Fail today, you know that hugely biased rag that always pushes their own narrative.
The OP and her math maybe an American bot that belongs to the MAGA crew.

A lot of low paid hard work jobs often 24/7 are done by immigrants. Young British people don't even apply for them.

Why would they bother? When they can probably earn more from benefits then they can just stay in and watch telly 😬

glitterpaperchain · 14/10/2026 18:45

I think we need to use a little bit of critical thinking here. It's talking about 'new' jobs, which will include a lot of seasonal and unstable work, such as fruit picking on farms, and temporary contracts in many industries. The jobs end and then the following year they are 'new' jobs. It also doesn't include when someone leaves a role and someone else is hired for that role, it's not a 'new' job it's an existing job being done by someone new.

So it's worth thinking about what kinds of work is being referenced in this data, and much of it is exactly the kind of work we already know that our economy relies on foreign workers for. Nothing to get up in arms about I don't think.

Bikergran · 14/10/2026 18:46

Yes, I do think a lot are too lazy to work, though when you have a welfare system that means people are often better off not working, because as soon as they start a job lots of other benefits stop, it is inevitable.

A friend of mine worked out that by doing quite a stressful job for 37.5 hours a week she was only £10 better off than when claiming benefits, so she managed to blag a medical reason to pack it in, takes the benefits and has a relaxed life.

I do know this is not typical, and I have seriously disabled friends who are really struggling to make ends meet, but there are cases. Also now it's a way of life for some families, who are on the second or third generation living on benefits.

We used to have lots of industries and factories that employed thousands, so there were plenty of jobs at all skill levels. Now those have gone and will not come back, if anything AI and robotics will further shrink the physical job market. It's a relentless spiral, and I have no idea how it can be fixed.

It will be carers, l live in a town with loads of care homes they cant get uk staff to work here so employ migrants.
Also we have a big tourism industry they can't get staff do lots of Ukraine, l dont see the problem they work and pay tax.

The problem is we the taxpayer are already paying hundreds of billions per year in our of work benefits including to over a million NEETS (youngsters not in education, employment or training) and should not be importing yet more people unless they have highly specialised skills we don't already have (very low no I would think). It is a huge waste of money and potential and miserable for people without a purpose. We could spend a fraction of the benefit budget in ensuring carers etc are paid a decent wage and UK based people would rush to do the job. I know from when I did a brief stint as a carer that although the headline rate was relatively high I had to spend a lot of time waiting between jobs so ended up on about £8 and hour. The present situation is unsustainable as the govt has got us £3trillion into debt and when it all crashes people are going to get a shock.

those middle aged Asians probably own the BP

No they don't actually They come in miles to work there and the local people can't get the jobs

Campanulaceae · 14/10/2026 18:51

There have recently been £5000 incentives for businesses to hire someone from India, which costs businesses less overall because they can pay them less. From a purely business decision, it makes sense. It's not right, but it makes sense.

And don't get me started on employees on "skilled worker" visas working at kebab shops.

I'm fed up of the 'Brits don't want these roles' - they do.

They just don't get a look in or aren't prepared to live in an HMO, working double shifts to eke out a basic existence.

Why don't we want more than this for our children?

people who have a social housing place are also expected to actually live there.

Anyahyacinth · 14/10/2026 18:56

Douglasmummy · 14/10/2026 17:57

Because they are already trained so employers don't have to bother spending time training up 18 year olds, because someone else in another country has done that. And all the reasons the person I quoted stated. That if your visa is dependent on your job employers can get you to do what they like. There are also places who basically applied to be sponsors as part of visa scams. We have a hugely inefficient system for work ( and student) visas where people know full well they can just do what they like and the chances of them being caught are minimal.

So these are skilled jobs ..so why can’t UK nationals train for them?

I was surprised when in the UK recently that there were quite a few people who were clearly from India/Pakistan (I mean based on their accents, not just assuming based on appearance) working in souvenir shops. No judgement either way, but it did make me wonder!

Because entry level jobs in those sectors which provide such training are like hens teeth. It's easier to get a job when you already have experience.

So hang on immigrants are a scourge in society draining our benefits and they’re also stealing all our jobs? Which is it?

Most people on UC are in work, whether white or brown, we should look at why working full time at Sainsbury’s or Starbucks or as a care worker or a cleaner is not paid well enough that a top up is needed.

I don’t know why this pisses people off, we need doctors, bus drivers, shop assistants, care workers, baristas, waitresses - it’s surely good people are working regardless of skin colour or ethnicity. People are just annoyed because they don’t want to believe a foreigner could do their job or compete with them. FYI non EU also included Australians, Americans, South Africans - or is it okay if they’re white?

Minasama · 14/10/2026 18:59

Monty36 · 14/10/2026 17:23

No. The employer ‘sponsors’ them to come here.
The employer does not have to prove that they could not find someone to do the job already resident in the UK before doing so.

My experience when hiring for a couple of large companies was that no one wanted the faff of hiring someone without the right to work. This may of course be different in technical/specialist roles.

When I went to New York last, the vast majority of souvenir shops were being run by south Asian people (with accents).

Well a lot of low paid social and health care employees will be claiming top up benefits, ditto those in other low paid roles if they bring families with them.

Cost of living in the UK is hardly cheap is it now.

You do realise that immigrants aren’t entitled to benefits right? My wife is an immigrant & was on a work visa with her school (she’s a teacher) for 10 years before she could apply for leave to remain. She was not entitled to any benefits then & she still isn’t now! You’re not entitled to any public funds until you become an actual British citizen, which is expensive & takes years to achieve.

I don’t know about Americans but I’ve experienced for myself how some/many English people in particular look down on Australians and South Africans.
