Mother in law keeps calling me fat

Just need somewhere to vent really as I’m really upset.
ive been struggling now for a while, I’m under a referral for suspected lipedema in thighs.
I’ve gone from 75kg to 93kg without any reason, and it’s literally all in the lower part of my body my face and upper body is still slim.
I eat well, I’m very active, tried cutting calories and I exercise 3/4 week and even joined karate with my son a few months ago.
I’ve literally tried everything so I went to the gp and they’ve referred me to the lipedema clinic to see if this is what the issue is ( I’ve had blood tests all are clear)

my mother in law is currently staying with us, my in laws are Asian and I’ve had comments from other family members about my legs and lower body.
in the past I’ve had an eating disorder caused by comments and even at my skinniest my legs where still the biggest part of me and I went through 2 years of not eating properly because of comments they were saying.

my mother in law came 2 months ago to stay, and alls I’ve heard every day she been here is how big i am and she doesn’t understand why.

for the past 2 days I’ve been crying. yesterday we was in the kitchen and randomly out of no where she squatted down and asked me “ can you do this” “ if you can do this it will help make your legs and hips smaller”
and then went on to tell me “ your very big”

today I asked her to alter some of my outfits and make them a bit bigger from the hips and she said to me “ when I had it stitched I didn’t realize how much big you are” “ you used to be your sister in laws size”

I’ve been in my room crying for over half an hour.
I’ve literally tried everything and nothing I’m doing I can loose weight or helps my thighs and it is now seriously mentally affecting me the things she is saying and it is almost every day she is saying it. I woke up at 6 this morning as I’ve been weighing myself every day and when I saw I’d gained a pound since yesterday I was crying looking in the mirror and alls I could hear in my mind is “ your very big”

I really don’t know what to do anymore because nothing is working and what she is doing is seriously affecting me mentally.
My husband says “ she doesn’t mean it to hurt you” but she is hurting me and I am burning inside and want to say something really bad to her.

Who are you to say your culture is better than hers? She married into this family so it is her perogative to integrate. If some cultures place high value on maintaining a healthy weight than that doesn't make them any worse, if anything we should be admiring their ability to be frank and honest with people they care about.

Cultural imperialism at its worse.

Even if some cultures place a high value on maintaining a healthy weight, that doesn't give them the right to be rude and to fat-shame other people who they deem to be overweight.

OP's MIL sounds like a total bitch, irrespective of which culture she belongs to. She has started on her grand-daughter now who is at the age where her grandmother's horrible attitude towards weight could lead to her developing an eating disorder.

For context I am a size small on the top and a large on the bottom.

I'd be setting her straight.

But at 93kg you're a size small on top?

I'm a size small on top and I am 56kg

So, it would be fine for us to go to somewhere like Japan and do something repeatedly that everyone in Japan found offensive whilst we wittered 'it's okay in my culture'

No? Thought not.

If someone is visiting the UK and have family here they need to adapt to our cultural rules and norms - so not insulting people.

I think you have to adapt - so you might walk around with a coffee a few times in Japan but then stop doing it as it dawns on you that Japanese people generally find walking around with a coffee uncouth.
The point being that you do that ordinary thing without bad intent. Hopefully once brought to your attention you change your ways!

I am really slim from my face and upper body.
I am tall as well 5 foot 7 but the weight is all on my hips and thighs and my lower legs are unaffected. My upper body is really small. As I said I am a large from the bottom and all my weight is in the lower body.

Yes this is why I came off hormonal contraception, like I said my thighs and hips have always been the biggest part of me even at my thinnest but after my 2nd and especially my 3rd pregnancy I have noticed after the 3rd that is when my problems have really started.
I lost 10kg 3 months after the birth of my 3rd child almost 3 years ago through a really big calorie deficit because there was an upcoming wedding but looking back on pictures I can see how ill I looked in my face because the weigh loss always affects my face badly. But now all of that and more has come back on.

Could you afford to see a private lipedema expert?

I have looked into it but don’t know where to start, the only ones I’ve seen are the ones who deal with liposuction/ surgeries and I’d like to avoid that route if I can/ for as long as I can and try my best to manage it myself.

but any advice would be great if anyone knows of any experts, I’ve been referred to the lipedema clinic but I don’t know how long it will take.

Tell her that each time she says this she is causing harm and is being hateful, damaging health,. Tell her to shut up, or go home.

To understand lipedema (shoild this be what the OP suffers from) you really do need to live it or live it via someone very close to you. It's not fat thatcan be lost through dieting or exercise

Didimag48 · 22/09/2026 13:22

It could be lipoedema or lymphoedema. Either way there is a solution - liposuction or lymph drainage with an experienced physio.
Retired physio, I was specialised in this and it works.
Please update us.
And tell your MIL to pound sand - it[s a medical condition either way.

Time for MIL to go home! And if your husband disagrees he can join her!

Absolutely this,nasty bitch

Catlover465 · 22/09/2026 13:24

What to do about neighbour’s rotten apples? He doesn’t think it’s a problem but they stink at this time of year and I have read they attract rats. All on his side otherwise I would go and clean them all up.

wfhwfh · 22/09/2026 13:26

For the people citing cultural differences, I would say this may be a legitimate point if OP was a guest in her MIL’s house. In that case, I’d suggest just leaving rather than calling her MIL out as a guest.

But its OP’s home and, even more importantly, her daughter’s. She should not have to tolerate being spoken to this way in her own home. Even if she didnt have a medical issue.

Incidentally, there are plenty of British people who would also see it as acceptable to comment on their young granddaughter’s weight under the guise of health concern. So it may well be part of the Asian culture - but it’s also present in Britain or at least was until quite recently. I wonder if this is the reason for the defence of the MIL.

Commenting on an impressionable pre-teen’s body is disgusting. OP, your MIL obviously feels comfortable handing out the shame & judgement - I’d hand her some back and make clear it wont be tolerated in your home.

People should not marry across cultures. Full stop. My grandmother was German, other side Scottish. Just did not work. I loved her dearly, it was fun and amusing, but it was incompatible for her immediate family. Should not happen if you want a normal life. Maybe it is OK among aristocracy, whatever, but does not work among normal people. Constant culture clash. And I mean real culture - not who is fat or not fat. I remember our relatives staying with us saying that compared to the Germans the English have no classical music (?????), that Purcell does not count, etc. etc. Enjoying our hospitality, eating our bread, being driven sight-seeing everywhere by my dad, having taken time off work. And they are allegedly cultured. However they have no manners at all, despite all their superior education, attainment, etc.

People should not marry across cultures stupid people.

Sorry peons you're talking nonsense. Your examples of behaviour are nothing to do with culture and everything to do with being backward, uneducated idiots. My mum was rural Irish catholic and my father was English CofE, both families got on extremely well, no issues despite the very different culture and religion. Both of my brothers are married to European women and my ex's family are from the Caribbean - NONE of us have had any issues with our in-laws or culture clashes, we all get along and respect each other because we are family and we've all been educated and brought up correctly. Some people are just callous and don't know how to behave, it's the easiest thing to respect others and apologise if you get something wrong, and all cultures know how to do that.

ButtercupYellow26 · 22/09/2026 13:41

Very rude. Tell your husband to deal with his mother or the visit ends.
Alternatively go and stay with your family until they leave. If husband wont back you then Id be having doubts about the marriage.

Jamlighter · 22/09/2026 13:43

Literally tell her to fuck off every time she says it. She will be so offended she will leave. Also while she is there don't do anything for her - no cooking no washing no cups of tea etc. Tell your husband to get on board. And those offering 'advice' on losing weight leave her alone that's not what the post is about.

they are Pakistani, non of these women inside the family are slim at all, just they are big from everywhere and not in one place like me and they don’t understand there is different body shapes and medical issues that cause these things. Yet if I did this to them they wouldn’t tolerate it.

my mother in law isn’t even slim, my sister in law isn’t even slim yet these comments always get aimed at me no matter my size. Even If I loose weight they’ll still tell me I need to work more on my legs this is what they did when I had an eating disorder and went anorexic and was ill, they still refused to understand I was unwell and kept telling me I need to work more on my legs and loose more from there and I kept eating less and less, I lost weight during my pregnancies because I was scared of gaining weight and being told things.

if I said the same things to my mother in law and sister in law my husband would kick me out himself because it wouldn’t be okay for me to do the same. This is the difference and they simply don’t want to understand and just aim it directly at me. It’s just the daily comments I can’t take, I don’t understand how she is expecting me to change that much in a day. I’m obviously not anorexic anymore but I still have disordered eating always as it’s a mental condition. I still am very cautious what I eat and what I can eat and how much I’m “allowed to eat”
they just refuse to understand

if I said the same things to my mother in law and sister in law my husband would kick me out himself because it wouldn’t be okay for me to do the same.

Is this the truth OP?

If so, how will you continue to deal with these comment from your MIL?

Will you DH really not set her straight regarding her unwanted comments?

It isn't cultural imperialism. This rudeness needs to be called out - every single time.

Yes, uneducated. Where did they learn their manners?

"Talent may open doors, and education may take you far, but manners will determine how welcome you are when you arrive"

My fav quote from Bruce Lee:
"Knowledge may give you power, but character will gain respect"

NotSmallButFunSize · 22/09/2026 14:00

We need to normalise telling rude people to shut the fuck up.

Even better, do it in front of your daughter so she knows you know this is outright mean bullshit and you won't tolerate it, about you or her.

With due respect, crying about it is never going to make it stop.

HandPulledNoodles · 22/09/2026 14:01

OP Ignore the batshit comments about cultural imperialism. If you have asked your directly MIL to not mention your weight and she continues to. You ask her to leave. If your husband doesn't back you up. You ask him to leave too.

You should not have to put up with this.

Greenmouldycheese · 22/09/2026 14:09

Some people dont view weight as a touchy or insulting subject, they just say it as it is as if pointing out a colour. Ive mostly seen this from the older generation. Can you tell your mil that you are sensitive abojt your weight and tell her not to mention it anymore? She might not be meaning to cause offense and unaware of how it makes you feel.
