To be disappointed Dolly Parton supported biological men using women's toilets?

I really liked her music and she seemed like a nice person: her Imagination Library came to my borough recently. I was very sad to hear she'd died.
But was very disappointed to read this. The statements she made about trans people deserving respect, no issue with those.
But minimising the reasonable concerns women have about being forced to let men in their toilets was wrong.
I'm not saying she should have spoken out for GC issues. It might have been best just not to comment.
Parton had connections with drag queens and I wonder if that's the lens she saw transwomen through : not an excuse but might partially explain.

Chance would be a fine thing explaining why women shouldn’t have the right to single sex spaces. I’ve asked a few times now but still tumbleweed from the modern all the waves feminists. Just the usual predictable moaning about the FWR board 🥱.

Well there were some pretty wild claims made in the early pages of this thread by some GC posters that haven't been evidenced yet and every GC poster who has come to scold women for having a different opinion hasn't felt like providing this global data that would easily convince us all to your opinion. But it's predictable derailing rather than just proving to us all the data you have.

Here we go again. It’s an obsession.

Noo, it’s a fact. If you can’t define a woman, how can you fight for women’s rights? When there were the Pussy Hat protests against Trump, one TRA said women shouldn’t wear the hats as it was “transphobic to assume all women has a vagina”.

I know you think this is a gotcha, but I actually DON’T think being kind is bad! 😮

Ok. So why not ask TIM to be kind and stay out of female spaces?

Why do the feelings of men get prioritised over the feelings of women who don’t want them in their spaces and sports teams?

I’m actually off now to help out at a pride event (a sports one!) supporting the trans community! Have a good day being mean about people on the internet!

Oooh, youre a bit snippy today. Chill dude. I’m just pointing out that TIM are not a marginalised group. If they were, governments and politicians would not be bending over backwards to prioritise their wants over women’s rights.

True. Very true. But if you can’t define a woman, how can you fight for their rights?

Quite easily and it's lazy to assume not to and naive when you look at the current politics spectrum. There are many political figures who "define a woman" the same as you who have some pretty ghastly ideas such as reducing our access to abortion, removing equality protections that stop us being fired for being pregnant etc which show that "defining a woman" doesn't guarantee us rights or protections and it some cases is defined in order to restrict our freedoms. Perfectly possible to fight for access to abortion for example for anyone who needs it.

Why do you have to call me snippy rather than defend your point? It's surprising for a group who claim to be full of strident women you do get easily offended at someone speaking directly don't you. Not snippy just a woman with an opinion and isn't softening it for you dude! If you don't feel your point is oversimplified please feel free to expand on how a man can never be marginalised because that was the point you made.

Are you applying this statement to TIM everywhere, or just where you live?

Good for you. They should be supported. As should women’s rights to sex based spaces. Stating fact isn’t mean. Have a good one!

Who is wanting to restrict access to abortion? Got any links? You can agree on what a woman is and disagree on pretty much what another thinks of other issues regarding women. It’s not difficult. If Tommy Robinson said he thought the world was indeed flat, and I believed that too, it doesn’t then make me a supporter of all that TR believes.

I find this ‘othering’ absolutely mental. I can care about women’s rights to SSS AND care about whether the council are collecting my bins.

I imagine that given it a pride event any toilets will be gender neutral / unisex and there won’t be any issues using them, much like a conference I was at earlier this year.

So what definition of woman do you use? If it’s anyone who “feels like” a woman, then wouldn’t you have to define woman so they know how a woman felt?

Olivebrancher · Yesterday 08:22

I think @Keeptoiletssafe is really clear on why floor to ceiling doors on gender neutral loos are more dangerous (can’t see if someone is having a medical emergency etc).

I, personally, think their case is far less convincing on why trans women using women’s toilets is dangerous.

Because if a transwoman wants to be in women’s toilets the safest design has to then change to one of individual privacy for everyone. It is no longer a women’s toilet. In certain situations this cannot be avoided. If you have a toilet in a small cafe for example it has to be a unisex design.

I collate incidents of when things go wrong in toilets. Most people in any demographic are good people. A man would typically help another man who was in difficulty. But bad men will exploit opportunities. Bad men have pretended to be transwomen for the duration of being in the women’s toilets to sexually assault women. Bad men put hidden cameras in toilets. Male doctors and male school staff are highly represented in that category. Bad men are voyeurs. All voyeurs in prison are men (Upto May 25)

Toilets are vulnerable places. So much so they have their own section in the Sexual Offences Act (2003). When this was debated in Parliament it was argued this would be discriminatory towards men. In fact it made heterosexual sex a crime in a toilet that the public or a section of the public had access to - homosexual sex was already a crime. There are implications for men if women are allowed in men’s toilets. If he exposes himself at a urinal? What about not closing the cubicle door? That’s what women had to put up with at the Home Office. Urinals which are safe, quick and space saving are more likely to go. That’s less units for men.

Sexual Harm Prevention Orders in many toilet cases have been put on men forbidding them to loiter or enter women’s toilets and in some cases unisex toilets.

We have vanishingly few public toilets in this country because they get closed down from the costs and misuse - sex, drugs and vandalism. There’s estimated to be one council run public toilet for every 15,000 people now.

Service providers are more likely to be private businesses. They need to keep their safer designs but in order to do that there needs to be rules that they must stay single sex.

What we actually need is more women’s toilets. Women didn’t use to have public toilets and we’ve been playing catch-up. For equality, women should have twice as many, due to our biological needs, to have equal queues.

Going back to Dolly Parton. If she read my safety report, I would like to think she would agree with me. She also carried a gun. We don’t do that here - we rely on the kindness of strangers around us to keep us safe if we are on our own in the toilet and have a medical emergency, being pestered, or are trapped.

As I said in previous posts, I saved the life of a young woman I didn’t know. Precisely because of a door gap. If the Good Law Project or ‘inclusive’ toilet designers had their way on toilets, we would not have seen her. They design in individual privacy. That’s the stark consequence of my experience and the type of incidents I collate.
