To feel jealous of the dog

TwinklyAmberSloth · 20/09/2026 12:38

DH and I have 3 kids.

We get on fine. No arguments.

But he hardly speaks to me and everything I love/do seems to irritate him. He is just so grumpy.

This morning he was clearly annoyed at me for opening the curtains at 7.30am. I'm an early riser. I go to bed 10pm and read, then try and sleep. I love mornings. DH goes to bed 11.30pm to midnight.

When he then got up 20 mins later, he didn't speak to me at all. He went straight down stairs and was playing with the dog.

He then has a shower, still doesn't speak to me, takes the dog for a walk, then takes DS to footy after shouting at DS (15) to get up. He let DS stay up til midnight then wondered why he wouldn't get up, so I was left to do the wake the teenager bit while DH walked the dog.

On a work day, he comes home then goes straight to the dog. He never asks how my day was. He will then come into the lounge 20 mins later after getting changed and tell me about his work.

I'm a little untidy. He picks up anything of mine and throws it in my office and moans. Ditto for kids stuff. Yet doesn't mind the dog hair everywhere and rolls his eyes if I comment on it.

Every evening he sits with dog on the sofa in his man cave, watching TV whilst on his phone. I sit on my own, or play the piano, or read. He then appears in the lounge about 10.15pm as I am about to go to bed. He hates books, he dislikes music and noise.

I work around 40 hours per week term time, and some work in school holidays. He works 37 hours a week and has flexi time and can WFH half the week. I do all the meal planning, cooking, organising kids stuff (except footy), cleaning, kids evening activities, school stuff.

I'm a lively cheerful person who likes people and has lots of hobbies yet I feel so lonely and dull. He genuinely seems to have no interest in me. Not physically and not mentally. Surely this is not normal for married life? Why doesn't he just divorce me and marry the dog?

I'm not a dog person. But when the last dog died 13 years ago DH was the most miserable git ever, so I had to agree to another dog as it was unbearable. I put rules in place e.g. sleep in utility room, not on furniture unless invited, not upstairs etc... but every single boundary I requested has been ignored.

Even when I do try and have a conversation, he seems to argue the opposite just for the sake of it. A motorbike did a wheelie down our road the other week and I said "what a nob head" and DH muttered "oh FFS just shut up". He likes motorbikes. He spends all weekend in the mancave watching bike racing.

If I'm not being unreasonable, would counselling fix this?

YABU: this is normal. men prefer dogs to people.

YANBU: this is not normal. couples talk and take interest in each others life.

Seriously @TwinklyAmberSloth read back through your posts , this is not a happy marriage or a happy home to raise your children in .

cheezncrackers · 20/09/2026 18:23

If you'd woken me up by opening the curtains at 7.30am on a Sunday when I was still asleep I wouldn't have spoken to you either! Massively selfish of you.

Babybirdmum · 20/09/2026 18:27

I think everyone’s being really harsh on you. I actually think this sounds awful and I couldn’t be with a man like that. He’s cold and critical yet doesn’t do anything to help you. He gives more love to the dog, which isn’t actually a reason to hate the dog, but it just makes it more obvious of the lack of affection he shows to you. Honestly one week in your marriage I’d be having palpitations. I’d honestly take a long look at your life and think how did we get here. He obviously has bad feelings towards you - were you once affectionate/ in love with each other? Is there any way of getting back to that? If not then I don’t see how you can live like this

Whatever the curtains and early rising issues and slight messiness issues are, nothing, but nothing, remotely outdoes in awfulness a human being who is married to another human being and who hardly ever talks to her or gives her the silent treatment or talks about his day while never asking her about hers. And you really should be as nice to your wife as you are to your dog. Ideally, rather nicer. But then I'm not a dog person.

Exactly, I would find the curtain thing annoying especially as someone who can be sensitive to bright sunlight but it doesn’t compare to his lack of regret for OP.

Some people are so stuck on the curtain open they’re ignoring everything else her husband does. Absurd.

Op the way he treats you is vile. It’s nothing to do with the dog. He doesn’t like or respect you or maybe just women in general.

Hotap · 20/09/2026 18:39

He won't go abroad as dog can't come (so I take the kids on holiday). And if I take the kids away for a week (I get school holidays so do all the childcare) then he often forgets to contact me all week and it's only me contacting him. He insisted on renovating the bathroom himself (after I wanted to pay to get someone to do it) and a year later we still have no main bathroom

This is terrible. Sounds like another man who did the wife and kids thing because society/upbringing told him too but he doesn’t actually enjoy family life and children etc.

Do you work OP? If you can afford it pay to get the bathroom finished . Don’t tolerate his BS.

This 100%.

Personally I couldn’t get past the ‘ffs shut up’ comment. It shows a complete lack of respect for you which I couldn’t live with.

You have admitted that you have not been perfect in all this OP but your husband’s behaviour is unforgivable. The obvious lack of any sort of care or affection towards you is hurtful and isolating. I would find it hard to live with the loneliness and as the children begin to move away from home, things will get worse.

Yet in spite of all this you seem to still love him? So I would be wanting to speak to him about the situation and asking what he wants to do. Is there a way forward? Would he go to couples counselling? If he admits that he no longer loves you then really there is no future and you would be better off apart.

A conversation needs to be had.

GelatinousDynamo · 20/09/2026 18:53

I feel sorry for both of you. You don't seem like bad people, just deeply unhappy and simply incompatible, and you persist in making each other even more miserable "for the children".

It’s the 3 DC I feel most sorry for

StarDolphins · 20/09/2026 19:08

Was the room you opened the curtains in the room he was still asleep in?! I would be seriously naffed off about that!

Blackbird2409 · 20/09/2026 19:10

The curtains would cheese me off a lot, although if you needed to be ready by 8.15, I can understand to some degree. Perhaps don’t give yourselves so much pressure on a Sunday morning or you take child to football if you are up early. Thats what my partner would do. Otherwise life’s too short for such misery and maybe you are both unhappy and need a change!

bozzabollix · 20/09/2026 19:17

Fixating on the poor dog alienates me somewhat, the poor thing can’t help your mutual contempt and dogs offer unconditional love that’s needed if you’re in a loveless marriage. I think you’re better off apart.

NewNameW · 20/09/2026 19:38

TwinklyAmberSloth · 20/09/2026 16:01

Again, I opened the curtains (a little) as he needed to be gone by 8.15am so I didn't really see the issue. I get I was wrong and should have left him to over-sleep.

The dog is his. Not mine. Previously we have clarified that walking the dog is his hobby, and not classified as a chore. A dog should never be a chore.

I have an electric piano. In the evening I use headphones as the kids are in bed. It's also in another room and not the lounge. Even if I'm not playing he will sit in the man cave with dog and TV and phone.

I do deal with my own "trash". I am often carrying bags and instruments and folders and marking when I get in. So I put the bags down in the hallway. Then I get straight on with dinner, helping with homework, doing stuff with kids etc... so forget to put things in my office. And yes the kids could deal with theirs too, but they sometimes forget.

He has a lie in every day. I am first up on work days, use the bathroom, make kids lunches, get their breakfast, make sure uniform is OK (one child autistic with sensory issues), put stuff in school bags, get teenager up*.

DH stays in bed til the last minute then has a quick shower. He can sleep through anything. INCLUDING an open curtain!

*Teenager is genuinely bad at waking up. He just can't. He has two alarms including a vibrating pillow one but I can have an entire conversation with him but he just goes back to sleep if I leave.

The dog can't be only one persons 'hobby' in a house full of adults teens and children.. I'm understand why he wants time alone with the dog if you are viewing the dog as hobby.

That is so sad 🙁

Dogs don't think on a loop like we do, they do however know people and situations and the dog clearly needs the mental stimulation, the dog won't understand in the moment why it's in your house, he will know it's home but if everyone is ignoring the poor thing until OH comes home, yeah the dogs going to focus on the situation and the person who brings love and cuddles and food and walks.

gannett · 20/09/2026 19:39

Can't believe the OP started her post "we get on fine" before describing a toxic, loveless marriage from hell over the course of the post and all her updates.

You don't love each other, you don't like each other, you don't respect each other. He pampers the dog because that's the only loving relationship in the house.

then I realised we had very little in common once we moved in together. But we made a go of it

You probably don't need us to tell you this was a mistake, but this was just... never a relationship that was going to work. It's not a marriage where there was once love and compatibility, and with effort you can find your way back to it. There was never compatibility, there was never a good foundation.

What you do with this information is up to you, I guess.

Passaggressfedup · 20/09/2026 20:11

It sounds lovely ke he is introverted and like his own company whilst You're extroverted.

It's hard to understand each other's needs but ultimately, it's important to find a compromise.

Shego · 20/09/2026 20:51

I'm going to defend the OP on the curtains thing. I'm a late to bed late to rise person and my DH is early. If he knows I need to be up early he will open the curtains at an appropriate time for me as it helps me wake up, and I appreciate it. He's also brings me a cup of tea in bed though so that helps.

maxslice · 20/09/2026 20:59

I wouldn’t speak to you either if you opened the curtains at 7:30 am. By all means, get up and get on with your life, but deliberately waking him up when you know he’s had a late night is incredibly inconsiderate. I can see your issues with the dog. My guess is, first of all he simply likes dogs, and secondly, dogs give unconditional love and acceptance. No one is happier to see you when you come home.

Have you discussed this with him in a non confrontational non critical way? Ask him to help you understand his point of view. Do not get defensive, he’ll shut down. Simply ask for insights. Then, take time to consider what he’s said and go forward from there.

Clearinguptheclutter · 20/09/2026 21:06

This isn’t about the dog

I’d have been annoyed about the curtains
i got up early but left them closed for dh to have a lie in

im not sure this relationship is healthy generally tho

You talk about him being 'cold' yet the way you spoke about his grief was freezing. Have a look at yourself before criticising him. Even the curtain opening suggests a complete lack of basic human thoughtfulness. Just leave him for both of your sakes.

I didn't actually speak about grief. DH was sad for a couple of days, the dog was cremated, we scattered his ashes somewhere nice, then DH was fine. There was no grief over the dog.

He was a miserable git because the dog was his hobby and his hobby stopped.

No dog walks, no dog to play with, no dog to roughhouse with, no dog to watch films with etc...

His reaction of grumpy git would have been the same if his motorbike had been taken away.

I'm not a cold person at all.

You two sound like bitter enemies not a married couple with three children.

Your kids are trapped in what sounds like a poisonous atmosphere. All the time

It's difficult to post emotion in a forum as it doesnt come across clearly. I prefer to stick to facts.

It may appear cold but I'm not a cold person at all. I am just factual.

I would say that is grief. Just a different stage than the first, more acute one. You are trying to minimise the pain by reducing the dog to a hobby. Spending lots of time with his dog doesn’t make it a hobby.. it was a beloved pet more likely.
