To feel jealous of the dog

TwinklyAmberSloth · 20/09/2026 12:38

DH and I have 3 kids.

We get on fine. No arguments.

But he hardly speaks to me and everything I love/do seems to irritate him. He is just so grumpy.

This morning he was clearly annoyed at me for opening the curtains at 7.30am. I'm an early riser. I go to bed 10pm and read, then try and sleep. I love mornings. DH goes to bed 11.30pm to midnight.

When he then got up 20 mins later, he didn't speak to me at all. He went straight down stairs and was playing with the dog.

He then has a shower, still doesn't speak to me, takes the dog for a walk, then takes DS to footy after shouting at DS (15) to get up. He let DS stay up til midnight then wondered why he wouldn't get up, so I was left to do the wake the teenager bit while DH walked the dog.

On a work day, he comes home then goes straight to the dog. He never asks how my day was. He will then come into the lounge 20 mins later after getting changed and tell me about his work.

I'm a little untidy. He picks up anything of mine and throws it in my office and moans. Ditto for kids stuff. Yet doesn't mind the dog hair everywhere and rolls his eyes if I comment on it.

Every evening he sits with dog on the sofa in his man cave, watching TV whilst on his phone. I sit on my own, or play the piano, or read. He then appears in the lounge about 10.15pm as I am about to go to bed. He hates books, he dislikes music and noise.

I work around 40 hours per week term time, and some work in school holidays. He works 37 hours a week and has flexi time and can WFH half the week. I do all the meal planning, cooking, organising kids stuff (except footy), cleaning, kids evening activities, school stuff.

I'm a lively cheerful person who likes people and has lots of hobbies yet I feel so lonely and dull. He genuinely seems to have no interest in me. Not physically and not mentally. Surely this is not normal for married life? Why doesn't he just divorce me and marry the dog?

I'm not a dog person. But when the last dog died 13 years ago DH was the most miserable git ever, so I had to agree to another dog as it was unbearable. I put rules in place e.g. sleep in utility room, not on furniture unless invited, not upstairs etc... but every single boundary I requested has been ignored.

Even when I do try and have a conversation, he seems to argue the opposite just for the sake of it. A motorbike did a wheelie down our road the other week and I said "what a nob head" and DH muttered "oh FFS just shut up". He likes motorbikes. He spends all weekend in the mancave watching bike racing.

If I'm not being unreasonable, would counselling fix this?

YABU: this is normal. men prefer dogs to people.

YANBU: this is not normal. couples talk and take interest in each others life.

No but it’s a sign that he annoys her as much as she annoys him, and they probably don’t like each other that much.

He has to leave the house at 8.15 anyway. She opened the curtains 20cm.

She needs to be able too see to get ready.

It's just rude and thoughtless behaviour and nothing anyone can say really changes that.

Her husband's behaviour is far more rude and thoughtless, but hey OP opened the curtains so his terrible behaviour towards her and the children fades into insignificance.

It’s not a race ro rhe bottom, she didn’t ask people to rank who is worse.

Firstly she never said she also was leaving and I’m assuming they have more than one room, so she can grab her stuff and get ready in the loo. There is no law says it’s to be the bedroom.

Funny how your posts have zero criticism of the H though.

She does everything but it’s still not enough in your eyes.

Branster · 20/09/2026 15:03

I’m glad you didn’t open my curtains at 7:30AM on a Sunday!
Why would you do that?
I’m an early riser myself. I was up at 5:45AM this morning and was back home from a long walk with the dogs, hang the washing out to dry, had an at-home diy facial and started making breakfast for the family by 9AM, when everyone else was still asleep.
Throughout my morning activities I did not make unnecessary noise because everyone else was asleep. Why would I cause them to wake up if they were not ready? It’s Sunday, lovely morning, I’m busy myself, they’re all old enough to sort themselves out of a morning.
I suspect your DH asked you in the past, several times, not to wake him up like this.
When the children were younger, I would have hated DH waking me up if he was already awake to sort out the kids and start the Sunday on his own.

She needs to get dressed, maybe comb her hair, put on moisturiser.

Weird how he gets away with showing zero consideration for her but she must tip toe around him in case the King wakes up a few minutes early.

Well I’m somewhat skeptical about people who can also be difficult to live with / have a relationship with but they deflect that by focusing on how much they do for the family. For me, the passive aggressive act of opening the curtain and leaving a mess and comparing that to a dog is telling. Not saying the husband isn’t a dick either, just that I don’t think OP is that easy either. They’re not suited to each other.

Ah yes, the woman must vacate the bedroom no doubt on tiptoe in the darkness to go and get ready in the toilet because the poor little man is sleeping and shouldn't be disturbed.

HappiestSleeping · 20/09/2026 15:11

@TwinklyAmberSloth your relationship with your husband appears to have degenerated into one where nobody takes responsibility for themselves, and nobody communicates, so you just end up sniping at each other. Once the rot like that sets in, it generally only gets worse.

Why is it your responsibility to get them all up? Let them sleep in and miss out. They'll soon learn.

Why not let the children make mess when they make their food as your husband didn't feed them? If he moans about the mess, that is the moment to point out that he could have made lunch to a satisfactory cleanliness level.

You appear to be making a rod for your own back. The only thing you can control is what you do.

I get that some of these things are shared problems, but you appear to be trying to find solutions for things that are unwelcome and / or unhelpful.

I do agree with some of the PP's that it doesn't sound like you are very compatible, but would add that if you want someone to spend time with you, you need to make it a pleasant experience. Neither of you appear to do that. One of you needs to take the first step or your relationship is likely to degenerate further.

AshCullen1894 · 20/09/2026 15:12

He is a horrible person and you sound like you are in total denial. The stories your children will be telling when they are adults!

MrsBatshitRatshit · 20/09/2026 15:13

That's dog people for you. The many who claim to prefer their dog to other human beings are not joking I'm afraid.

That’s not a man/woman thing sexist. My husband would tip toe around me too, as I would him. It’s just basic consideration for the other person.

clickyteeclick · 20/09/2026 15:16

OP you say he’s not a horrible person but if you don’t wake your child up there’s aggression and swearing and cursing. This doesn’t sound like a good person. Might you had said this to justify the opening the curtain thing? Or is he genuinely like this? If so, you and your family are tip toeing on eggshells around the man and it needs to be addressed, or your kids therapist will when they’re older.
The opening of curtains was out of order. If your son is late for football eventually they’ll figure it out between the two of them.
The dog thing is a side note. It’s not really about the dog is it. I reckon a good dose of marriage counselling may be in order.

RamALamADingDong2 · 20/09/2026 15:16

I know this is massively beside the point (i.e., point being you are two very incompatible people somehow in a marriage that makes zero sense), but.....

There are other, much more gentle ways to wake someone?!?!

DH and I are often knackered by the end of the week, so we make sure we each get lie-ins at the weekend. Every so often, one of us might oversleep when we have plans lined up. If that happens, I just go in, rub his shoulders and speak quietly to softly wake him up. He would do the same for me.

Opening the curtains would be a sure-fire way to piss either of us off!

You sound like a fun sponge tbh.
I feel sorry for the dog you didn’t want.
Sounds like you have grown apart, and lead separate lives.

TwinklyAmberSloth · 20/09/2026 14:46

The teenager yes (and does), but the 10 year olds, no. They can get themselves food like cereal but make a LOT of mess and DH doesn't like that.

I'm sorry, but the more you post, the more unpleasant and controlling your husband sounds.

Are you aware of how beaten down and miserable you sound?

TwinklyAmberSloth · 20/09/2026 15:27

OK message received. I am a thoughtless controlling evil person for opening the curtains 20 cm to let some light in.

I'm just trying to ascertain if its normal to not speak to your wife all day, not because he is sulking but because it doesn't seem to cross his mind that he has to.

The dog wants for nothing. A walk would never be missed. Two a day. Food is often supermarket finest roast chicken, microwaved to a pleasant temperature. No silver platter yet. Dog beds in three rooms. He frequently chats to the dog, tummy tickles etc... Quite the pampered pooch. Dog is 12 so getting on a bit...

Kids love the dog but he is always telling them off for being too rough or annoying the dog.

It just feels really humiliating to come second place to a dog.

So do I just have nothing to do with anything football related, let DS sleep in and let DH just deal with it?

I didn't mean to be controlling or even considered that I was being controlling in this situation. I just tried to get DS out of bed and in the shower to try and prevent tension.

I just don't like DH shouting and swearing and cursing DS.

Yes.....thats exactly what you should do. A teenager is more than capable of setting an alarm and DH is a grown adult. Your marriage sounds utterly shit. I would be annoyed if you opened the curtains too!

And whats with emphasis on showers when they are going to football? Why can't they have showers when they get back?

And I agree with this as well.

Let them get up in their own time and if they're late, they're late - why make it your problem?

Ohnobackagain · 20/09/2026 15:31

Don’t get your DS up for football. Leave it for your DH. Stop doing so much @TwinklyAmberSloth

And also, consider whether you want to remain in this marriage; it sounds awful for both of you. Not taking sides, but I’m sure you would be far happier on your own.

alcovecupboards · 20/09/2026 15:31

Does he purposely wake you up when he goes to bed later? There is literally no need for you to open the curtains when you wake up early if he's still sleeping - other than to annoy him. And let's be honest - you know that. You don't sound like you like or respect him very much so it's no surprise he would rather walk the dog than spend time with you. If my DP decided the dog had to sleep in the utility room - he'd be gone.
