I believe him.

BakeOut · 19/09/2026 22:46

Christ, I suddenly feel really bloody sad for William.
He had an emotionally unstable mother. I know she loved him, but she was not a stable mother. He's got one fucking shit of a brother. A sister in law whom he hates. He must find his father really very difficult, I think most of us can see that Charles would make a difficult father. He would have phenomenally conflicted feelings towards Camilla and I've always wondered how he has ever even managed to stand in the same room as her. His paternal uncle is a paedophile who has committed sex crimes. And now his maternal uncle has written a book that will surely deeply upset him.
I don't care that he has immense material wealth. He is a human being who never asked to be born in to the royal family. And no amount of wealth can buy peace in your heart.

Yes fully verified. It came out during the 2002 trial of Paul Burrell.

In a letter to her CS criticised Diana as a "fickle friend" and referenced her struggles with bulimia, writing that "manipulation and deceit are parts of the illness". What a charmer. And apparently they never spoke again - she obvs died the following year.

I know letters between Diana and Charles Spencer came out around the Paul Burrell trial, but the well-documented letter that made the tabloids was from Charles Spencer to Diana? If the quote you attribute to Diana exists, it should be possible to identify it.

Shloopie · 19/09/2026 22:52

We could use Harry Hill's sage advice to the rival factions at this time.

AIBU to believe Charles Spencer after watching this BBC clip?

And I'm sure ole William has some less than wonderful aspects to his personality too.

You are not being unreasonable. I believe him too

That video is compelling isn't it

BitOutOfPractice · 19/09/2026 17:20

Yeah yeah because as a senior royal he’s never been trained to put on a game face 🙄

Well he isnt very good at a game face most of the time is he. He takes after his dad who never bothered invoking great PR.

emuloc · 19/09/2026 19:16

Diana was most likely very vulnerable, and suffering from her troubles mentally, when she spoke out. Can anyone say the same for her Brother?

Out of interest, why would people not describe CS as fragile and vulnerable?

People use slurs against him for much the same behaviours as Diana exhibited, mentally unstable, poor history of relationships, unfaithfullness, oversharing. Both given a life they may not have chosen in any other context.

FluentOP · 20/09/2026 00:33

I believe that Prince Charles said that. Apparently, Charles Spencer told other people (probably his two sisters and mother) after the phone conversation so if his two sisters corroborated it that would add weight to it. I do think that people would be more forgiving of Charles Spencer if he were to say that all or most of the profits of the book were being donated to charity.

FluentOP · 20/09/2026 00:42

Helenbelena · 19/09/2026 10:17

I believe that Charles was relieved when Diana was out of the picture. I believe Earl Spencer.

Yes, it was very convenient for the royal family that she died. It’s very strange that none of the cameras in the Alma tunnel were working that night !

BIWI · 19/09/2026 09:58

@BakeOut Why didn't you post this in the Royal Family topic?

Presumably because there is already a poll on there and the results are not as hoped for. Sometimes when people on the RF board are challenged, they say it’s because posters there are too invested and that ‘normal’ people would agree with them. Still not working out for the OP, unfortunately.

Otterliee · 19/09/2026 10:14

Look how hard the BBC are trying to disuade him. Did you write it down? Keep a diary? You were grieving, could have misheard etc

They are such gaslighters.

And making out people would believe Charles simply because he is the King 🤣
Because Kings have such a history of impeccable and respectable behaviour 🙄

I loathe Charles and I believe he said this. 100% and probably a lot worse besides.

Why do you loathe Charles? He has loved only one woman his whole life. His only mistake was to marry the wrong woman, because he was under pressure to reproduce and the woman he loved was married with young children. He was banging on about the planet and climate change decades before anyone else. He's quite the hippy on the side, talking to plants and consulting gurus in his youth. And the Prince's Trust has done SO much good. Over the years, it's helped about a thousand young people who were down on their luck into better lives and full-time work through training and other interventions.

He did not fully love Diana but hoped to grow to love her. It was obviously a huge mistake, They had nothing in common. And don't forget, she didn't love him, either. She had no time for his friends or interests, and she made him get rid of his Labrador. She wouldn't have given him the time of day if he hadn't been the future king. Don't get me wrong, I liked Diana. I feel sorry for her because she very obviously had mental health problems, which were not recognised as such back then but would be treated today. Charles did send her to doctors in London for help.

All this is to say, I really don't think Charles is the villain he's portrayed to be.

CrazyMidget · 20/09/2026 03:12

I don't believe Spencer. He's an odious man of very questionable character, which explains why he's saying all this about a man who has cancer and also with no regard to the hurt it will cause his two nephews. He KNOWS the king is very limited in what he can say back. I expect the roof at Althorp needs redoing, or something.

At BEST, he is misremembering or misheard. I do not believe that Charles would ever have said such a thing.

On a different note, that room they're in is really beautiful. Althorp, I'm sure.

And all that's even without accounting for the fact that his wife has had a pretty bad cancer! (Please no one say she didn't; you only get chemo if it's bad, and said chemo was not preventative. It's to attempt to try to prevent a recurrence, not to prevent cancer in the first place.)

I agree completely with the above. I bet he'd give it all up in an instant if he could have been born into a nice, normal family like the Middletons. And the life stress started early for him; his parents were rowing bitterly from a young age. (Diana famously talked about how he would push tissues under the bathroom door when he could hear her crying in there.) And as if that's not bad enough, all the parental drama was global front-page news. And then, the dust had only settled from all that when she died!

There isn't enough money and prestige in the world to make up for all of that.

Outtaxed · 20/09/2026 03:59

If all the proceeds of the book are donated to a mental health charity in Diana’s name, I’m open to believing it.

Why? Are you saying he DIDN'T champion the planet decades before anyone else, that the Prince's Trust hasn't helped hundreds of young people, and that he hasn't been a one-woman man his whole life?

RunningJo · 20/09/2026 07:04

emuloc · 19/09/2026 09:44

Even if it is true that KC said that, Charles Spencer should have done the decent thing, and kept his counsel. It is really not on, what he has done here. Has he forgotten he has nephews?

I agree.

He doesn’t come across as a particularly nice person, didn’t he refuse to let Diana stay at the family home?. He’s also ostracised his children. Not sure what he hopes to gain other than money.
If it happened, you deal with at the time, privately, not in a book many years later.
If he thought anything of his nephews he’d not do this. None of us know if it’s true, or what the conversation was. But writing a book imo, about private family matters is a bit cheap, no matter who your family are.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 20/09/2026 07:48

When there’s no “proof” people will simply believe the worst of someone they dislike, and the best of someone they do. No matter who they are. Personally I wouldn’t trust Earl Spencer to fart without shitting himself, let alone anything that comes out of his mouth. But more than that, even if it WAS true, it’s despicable to drag it all up again for those boys, 30 years later. The man is a charlatan and a vile piece of work.

ItsAlwaysTwins · 19/09/2026 20:07

I’m inclined to believe him more than Charles Windsor.

I'm inclined to believe Bryan Kohberger more than Charles Spencer.

Ukisgaslit · 20/09/2026 11:40

I don’t think the Windsors care what we believe re what Charles said about Diana
I think they are more worried about the Charles is gay / bi rumours resurfacing .

I dont think any of the marriages the Windsors present us with are what they seem

Futurehappiness · 20/09/2026 12:06

BitOutOfPractice · 19/09/2026 17:28

To be honest I couldn’t give a rat’s ass either way (and yes I know I’m commenting on this thread - I’m a historian and trying to look at it dispassionately) because I think the lots of them - the spencers as well as the windsors - are a bunch on entitled idiots with little or no idea about how normal people think or feel. That’s one of the main reasons why I think Charles probably did say those “monstrous” things. He has not had a normal life since the day he was born.

This really. None of us has any way of knowing for sure whether or not this happened the way Charles Spencer described. I must say though that it is odd that the Palace statement did not say outright that he was wrong.

CS might well be as terrible a person as some posters are claiming....but it doesn't mean he is lying about this. It has to be said that KC is also no slouch when it comes to adultery and betrayal of ex wives, and poor treatment of his family members. But he also has some genuine positive achievements behind him and nobody ever said he was not a hard worker either as PoW or now as King. People are complex after all.

I don't think the RF are normal though, as I think that due to their vast privilege and the deference they receive all their lives (particularly the male members) they can't respond normally to things the way you or I would. Due to the said privilege I find it hard to feel sorry for any of them.

CrazyMidget · 20/09/2026 12:44

FluentOP · 20/09/2026 00:42

Oh God, here we go. There's always one, isn't there. Yes, of COURSE the RF somehow had an in with the Parisian authorities to have the cameras disabled that night. Nothing whatsoever to do with the driver being drunk.

FYI: The Holocaust was real, 9/11 was not an inside job, and the earth is not flat.
