Charles Spencer ignored his father’s will and gave his stepmother 48 hours to move out of Althorp when she was widowed, firing all her staff without notice and he & his sister refused to let her use luggage because it belonged to the “family”, so the woman who lost her husband 2 days earlier was chucked out of her home with her clothes in bin bags, and banned from taking any personal items unless she could “prove” they were hers.
He is in no position whatsoever to be publicly judging people on how they communicate with the recently bereaved.

BillyBites · 19/09/2026 17:51

He comes across as telling the truth but I also think it highly unlikely (King) Charles said what CS seems to recall. He was quite clearly horrified and devastated when Diana died.
So, yes, recollections probably varying wildly here. The most likely scenario in my opinion is that KC said something that CS misconstrued/misheard and it grew legs 30 years later and here we are.
But regardless, he’s an absolute bastard to include it in a book when it will greatly upset at least one nephew.

BishBashBoshDumpling · 19/09/2026 17:55

Is his bank account a bit light or something?

Why a book? And why a deliberately inflammatory rage-baitey publicity stunt to desperately promote it?

I'm not remotely interested and I dont believe much of the population is either. Perhaps it'll sell better overseas.

Bikergran · 19/09/2026 18:07

Well, I believe he is coldly and calculatingly trying to milk his sister's death for his own financial gain.

StormGazing · 19/09/2026 18:30

I don’t believe him. KC fought the queen to get the funeral Diana deserved, he flew out to get her body too, he looked bereft, and they had a friendship … remember the story about her shouting out of the KP window ‘same time next week’ … Spencer’s account doesn’t add up. Also he’s got a bad track record of treating people badly, ex wives and children, albeit KC has a fractured relationship with Harry, that’s Harry’s fault.

RosesAndHellebores · 19/09/2026 18:40

I wonder if Charles Spencer's ex wives would verify his veracity? At least he's grown out of throwing bread rolls across the room at Mossop Street.

I'd like to know the context of the conversation. If it referred to she'll be forgotten soon enough in relation to the dalliance with Dodi and his papa, fair enough but we'll never know.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/09/2026 17:20

Yeah yeah because as a senior royal he’s never been trained to put on a game face 🙄

The thing is, if he’s been trained to put on a game face he’s been trained also to ca’ canny : ie, not rant and make inflammatory statements on the phone to someone who dislikes and resents him and could easily be recording the conversation or have other people with him. This was after tampongate after all

BitOutOfPractice · 19/09/2026 18:50

I don’t think for a minute that Charles, at the time this happened, would imagine that anyone would have the temerity to repeat what he said. I mean didn’t Spencer say that “lack of public duty” was one of the things he was ranting about. At the time everybody kept their vow of silence (hence why the “three people in the marriage” interview was quite such a bombshell and why the late queen had to be dragged kicking and scresming to show any personal grief or remorse when Diana died).

These people do not react to personal tragedies in the same way us mere mortals do. It’s been trained out of them. They still show an almost medieval attitude to death, producing heirs, and marriage.

emuloc · 19/09/2026 19:16

Futurehappiness · 19/09/2026 16:14

Diana made the choice to speak very publicly about her life and marriage and the RF which may well have affected her children at the time, when they were still very young. I can't judge whether she was right or wrong to do that and it hardly matters any more now.

But I am not sure it is reasonable to blame Charles Spencer for also speaking out now (when her children are adults with children of their own) or to expect him to be any more scrupulous in protecting them, than their own mother was.

Diana was most likely very vulnerable, and suffering from her troubles mentally, when she spoke out. Can anyone say the same for her Brother?

MyNamedoesntWork · 19/09/2026 19:48

This is a man on his fourth marriage with infidelity alleged in his three divorces.
Now, how truthful do we think he is, given his history?

I’m inclined to believe him more than Charles Windsor.

RhannionKPSS · 19/09/2026 20:12

No, because he is a shit

MorganKitten · 19/09/2026 20:13

Spencer wasn’t even talking to Diana in the lead up to her death, they fell out during her divorce and has been vile to all his ex wives. Pot. Kettle. Black.

Armorlux · 19/09/2026 20:29

Charles Spencer is the best poster boy for the abolition of hereditary titles / stately piles et al that I can think of.

He's a deeply disturbed individual who seems to have a tenuous grasp of reality. His actual claim to any fame is solely because of Diana but, apparently, they were estranged when she died. No one would look twice at him in any other situation. Nor publish or read his books.

He's media trained,so hardly likely to crumble in front of Laura Kuennsberg.
Believe what you like,OP.

ShamedBySiri · 19/09/2026 20:53

Charles Spencer may come to regret doing this - his shady past is being exposed all over X along with his hypocrisy.

"Charles Spencer's profiting of Princess Diana's memory and death needs to be exposed: 🛑 Made £25M touring her bridal gown and personal items across the US 🛑 Made £15 million more displaying them at Althorp for 15 years -to 2013 🛑 That grift only stopped in 2013 when Prince William turned 30 and took legal control of his mother's personal possessions and moved them back to Kensington Palace. 🛑 Made £11 million on Althorp tickets sales since 2014. 🛑 Allegedly being paid millions for a Netflix doc exploiting Diana and doing what he complained the media has done. Now Earl Spencer is profiting off his sister yet again with a £10M propaganda book. He has profited over £61+ million of his sister Diana's memorey and death."

Here's a tally of all the money he has made from Diana, accompanied by a clip of him discussing how he would never profit from his sister's death.

I urge everyone to listen VERY closely to the words of Charles Spencer in 1998 and compare them to what he is doing today in 2026.

i don't believe him - it isn't credible that CW would say anything so inflammatory out loud and it doesn't fit with his demeanour at the time of D's death.

He's got a book to sell - who's going to read it unless it's got some salacious gossip in it? Don't have any? Just make something up, the wilder the better.

Diana was no fan either. A1996 letter from her describes CS as 'A cold, uncaring and abusive husband and a terrible brother.'

sesquipedalian · 19/09/2026 09:35

IF this is true, why has it only come out now? If the Earl of Spencer had said something at the time, the papers would have been all over it, and it would have been very damaging to the royal family, who were at a low ebb at the time. I’m sorry, but I think this is a convenient and sensationalist remembering to sell a few books. Let’s not forget, this is a man who wasn’t even invited to his own daughters’ weddings.

In the words of Abba Money, money money...he's probably skint.

Oh and his favourite nephew has come back to the UK and is pratting about again

Is that fact or fiction? I’m not sure it’s ever been verified.

Yes fully verified. It came out during the 2002 trial of Paul Burrell.

In a letter to her CS criticised Diana as a "fickle friend" and referenced her struggles with bulimia, writing that "manipulation and deceit are parts of the illness". What a charmer. And apparently they never spoke again - she obvs died the following year.

Futurehappiness · 19/09/2026 15:07

100%. I absolutely believe that this happened as Charles Spencer described. I was really unimpressed by the Palace statement with its insinuation that CS's grief must have caused him to misremember - without stating outright that he was wrong. If what CS said was false why not just say that?

They must be really upset that the decades of gaslighting and undermining Diana and boosting their own popularity has been set back by CS accusations. The cold fury shows in this statement.

But the default RF position is to protect its principals, either by covering up the truth or by outright lying. When the accusations against Andrew first came to light, the palace statement was that these were 'false and without foundation'. So they - the spokespersons of our Head of State - were happy to smear a sex trafficking victim as a liar in order to protect Andrew (and are protecting him to this day).

Very, very well said.
All of it.

Earl Spencer couldn't lie straight in bed.

Funny that he didn't mention it 30 years ago when it would have been gold dust for the press.

Just creating a hoo haa now to sell a book. He would sell his granny if it bought him a new wing in his mansion.

He’s an odious man who has profited from his late sister for years and this is his latest.

Nearly 30 years after her death and he’s now declared all this for the first time. Just why? Well his divorces are expensive I suppose and he’s certainly had plenty of them.

He treats women badly, his late sister included.

Even if it is true that KC said that, Charles Spencer should have done the decent thing, and kept his counsel. It is really not on, what he has done here. Has he forgotten he has nephews?

Exactly, it’s just despicable after what they’ve gone through in recent years too. Serious health concerns and H&M tormenting them all. Also H&M had been talking to Spencer, possibly colluding on a smear campaign.
