AIBU to believe Charles Spencer after watching this BBC clip?

A long, interesting thread.

No fan of Charles Spencer but I suppose I can see why he might have waited.

His second etc wives knew what they were getting into following his behaviour towards the first one, but were probably keen to be royal adjacent - so I’ve not much sympathy for them tbh. That’s in response to the “he’s been married twenty times” posts.

I’m none too keen on the other Charles either and now that slug Piers Morgan has entered the chat. What a trio.

I can think of several reasons he wouldn't have said anything at the time, can't you?

For the sake of her poor children for one, probably a sense of duty towards the royal family / decorum, for it being seen as spiteful and strange to discuss it so soon after her death, to take the focus away from his anger towards the media which was his agenda at the time. He made some quite pointed anti RF comments at her funeral.

I'm not saying it's true or that he's even a credible source, but not saying anything public at the time is not a reason to disbelieve him.

Interesting how Spencer has waited until both Queen Elizabeth and her private secretary Robert Fellows ( husband to Diana’s sister Jane ) died before bringing out his book

There is one pisitive thing to think about from this. If he is so desperate for money that he has to do this, then at least we can assume all those ex wives managed to get hold of a significant portion of his cash. Lets hope so.

Will she ever be permitted to Rest In Peace. Why is he bringing it all up now. And we have all formed our opinion on the Royals a long time ago. If you support them this is just an exaggerated mis remembered irrelevance. If you don't support them it just confirms what you think about them.
Will anyone actually buy the book.

Well exactly. For all of his talk at Diana's funeral of blood family and protecting his nephews, his own personal life is a car crash. Isn’t he on wife no 4, following 3 divorces? 2 of his ex wives have accused him of cruelty and emotional torture, his first wife became anorexic and claimed that he constantly accused her of being fat, having given birth to 4 children. 2 of those children have now married and he wasn’t even invited to their weddings. To not be invited to one of your children’s weddings would be unusual. To not be invited to two is extraordinary. Burrell and Spencer seem to be two of the most toxic people in Diana’s short life. None of which excuses the now King’s stupidity in marrying her in the first place… If this was being played out on the Jeremy Kyle show people would, rightly, be rolling their eyes :)

Honestly that poster is wrong. Charles Spencer has sold paintings before from his private art collection worth an estimated £85 million. He has an estimated £40 million in liquid assets. This is not about money.

He says as a historian, it's about setting the historical record straight. And yes I believe him.

Add in to that he can never do anything without being filmed / photographed / or quoted. No possibility of retiring, or stepping down from the role, like a Prime Minister could, for example.

Its hard to believe but it's interesting that a couple of normally quite sycophantic journos have confirmed it.

It would be such a terrible thing to say that I did wonder if something was misheard or misinterpreted down the phone. I have to say, though, not only does Spencer seem very credible, Richard Kay says it chimes with his recollections at the time. It's also notable that although the Palace put out a statement, said statement did not deny that he said it.

If he did say it, then that is beyond appalling and he deserves to have it come out. It would be despicable enough to say it to a third-party, such as a courtier, say, or privately to his own family, but to say it to the deceased's BROTHER! 😱

If Charles did say it, I reckon Diana would be doing a happy dance wherever she is.

So many of the Royal Family and Diana's family are just awful. (Well, her brother and deceased parents.) William and Kate are blessedly normal. So many of the generation above them are just rotten. Apart from the obvious, like Prince Andrew, Princess Michael is a pure old-fasioned Nazi from another era, and I can't believe she wore a Blackamoor brooch to meet Meghan.

It will be a good day for the monarchy when William and Kate come to the throne.

to his dead sister
to his nephews (that he promised to protect)
and if there was ANY truth in it, Spencer would have spouted it at the time.
He wants money for all the women HE has mistreated (four wives) and seven children plus his estate ......

As I say, not a pleasant man...
