AIBU for ignoring him? He asked about childcare for my kids.

I'm a single mum with 3 young kids (12-15) and I've been texting a guy (we're both 50) from an app who said we should chat on the phone soon to arrange a date. I said I'd prefer text right now but we can call later if we get a chance. So he texted me the next day;

"Just wondering, I know you've young kids but are they too young to stay home alone or do you have someone to watch them?"

I had no clue why he needed to ask that??? Why would he think I'd leave them alone and what's it got to do with him??? Why the hell is he asking that??

He explained he was just trying to see how easy it is for me to get free time. He added he knows I'm a busy single-mum after all and he doesn't know how busy I am or what my my other commitments are. I laughed and told him I am busy but I do teach my kids to be independent and so they're very good. I told him I'd msg him later as I'm busy. That was 3 days ago now and I've not contacted him since. He texted me today, "Still busy?" but I've not replied or even opened it.

AM I BEING UNREASONABLE TO IGNORE HIM AND WRITE HIM OFF FOR ASKING ABOUT MY KIDS?

You have baggage, and I don’t mean your kids.

Let the guy go find someone less intense.

Sensiblesal · 14/09/2026 00:36

You have massively over reacted here. His next question after was probably when will you be free to fix a date to meet.

poor man actually was being super considerate here.

CombatBarbie · 14/09/2026 00:37

Yeah dating is not for you, gawd the guy was trying assess what time you have to date. If you wont leave a 15yr old to watch the 12yr old, when were you planning on meeting this guy?

I think hes dodged a bullet to be fair!

NickyC1975 · 14/09/2026 00:37

whatwouldlilacerullodo · 14/09/2026 00:17

12-15? That's not young, and they can stay home alone. Did you mean 2-5?

Sorry, that was a typo - I meant 12 -13.

And if the initial conversation is flowing, its normal to want to have a coffee/walk/date as soon as practically possible to save wasting people's time if the reality is not the same as online or you dont find them physically attractive. Very very normal....

Unless you are gonna do a massive drip feed that there is SEN which means they cannot be left alone (and you have no support) 12/13 is a perfectly acceptable age to be left for a few hours.

mrlistersgelfbride · 14/09/2026 00:42

12-13 is still not what i’d call young children.
He wasn’t asking things about your kids. He was trying to fathom when you might be free for a date.
You are blowing this out of proportion.

wellherewegoagainpeople · 14/09/2026 00:44

You sound wild. Like, really. What an extreme reaction to a straightforward question regarding a future date

Boreded · 14/09/2026 00:52

Is this the same guy you aren’t happy with getting hot and heavy or a different one?

RosesAndHellebores · 14/09/2026 00:53

@NickyC1975 Is this the same chap you snogged in a bar or do you have two on the go?

@NickyC1975 Is this the same chap you snogged in a bar or do you have two on the go?

No. They're both different guys from an app at different times. And I didn't snog the other guy, there was no tongues.

thisismeithinkorisit · 14/09/2026 01:01

what is the problem exactly?
do you think he wants to know if you have childcare so he can lure you out the house and attack your kids? or do you think he's accusing you of being a shit mother who leaves her little kids home alone whilst she fucks about? it really isn't clear why you're abgry

Why are you on a dating website if you cant date because you wont leave your kids home alone?

JustSayyNo · 14/09/2026 01:44

He's trying to work out if there is a future here or if you aren't as available as he'd like. Fair enough.

Danikm151 · 14/09/2026 01:45

Wow talk about an overreaction!
He’s just trying to work out how often you’re free

JaneFoe · 14/09/2026 01:46

Are you trying to avoid telling him you are seeing someone else @NickyC1975 ? Or is the other guy the childcare

CypressGrove · 14/09/2026 02:11

NiftyKoala · 14/09/2026 03:00

That's quite a big leap for a normal question from him. Kindly it seems like you are not ready to date so making an issue from nothing.

Iocanepowder · 14/09/2026 03:14

Let him go op. You’re not ready for dating. The captial letters in your op are extreme.

He’s not asking about your kids. He’s wondering how much free time you have and whether there’ll be an issue of you struggling to meet as you always need to arrange childcare first. It’s really not an unreasonable thing to check.

thecatinblack · Today 00:15
I don’t think dating is for you. Your reaction is extreme.
...............
I agree with. both of the above posters.
The guy just wants to know if you will be available to go out regularly.

As your children are 12 and 15, I would think you are.

However you have never met this man, only texted. Why is it such a big deal?

Whattodo1122 · 14/09/2026 03:58

I would find that question a little odd…might just be the wording but I’m a big believer to always Trust your instincts.
