AIBU to want an apology after a colleague injured my ankle?

Scrrt · 13/09/2026 16:59

a few weeks ago I was coming out of the staff room at work and a colleague came flying in, crashed into me, knocked me out of my shoe and I stumbled and landed awkwardly on my ankle. It’s been weak and painful ever since. I had to cancel a charity race and Ive had time off work for appointments and X-rays.

Her response was “well I was hungry”. Everyone who saw it happen finds it hilarious. People who didn’t see it finds the description hilarious. I don’t and I’m pissed off. I want her to acknowledge it and acknowledge that it was her fault and apologise rather than it still being treated like a comedy sketch.

They should have apologised at the time, or at least checked you were okay.

YABU to still be stewing on it weeks later. It was an accident, move on.

StormGazing · 14/09/2026 05:46

As PP have said it needs to go into the accident log. I’d suspect someone at work would be speaking to this person about their conduct, so maybe tell them she’s never acknowledged it by apologising

WildFatball · 14/09/2026 07:22

Interesting how so many people equate an apology with blame. If you bump into someone and injure them it's common human decency to apologise and check in on the person if they are having treatment. It is irrelevant whether there was fault or whether it is a freak accident - if you hurt someone then it's human and decent to offer some acknowledgment. It's not about the person doing the knocking over it's about the person knocked over. People are so self absorbed to the extent they are more concerned about who is to blame than who has been hurt. Op I suggest that you also should get out of the blame mindset because it will make it easier for others to acknowledge your injury.

thinkingofachange · 14/09/2026 08:05

it’s not ok and sorry it happened. but good luck getting an apology I’ve been shouted at 5 times in work in past few years and zero apologies

longtompot · 14/09/2026 08:46

@Scrrt would they all found it as hilarious if you were carrying a fresh cup of tea or another equally hot item and it scalded you? Your colleague should have apologised at the time, but I think weeks down the line it's probably a bit late and will just be empty words.

Broken jaw from being hit in the face by the door..?

She didn’t get hit in the face by the door..? Or hit by the door at all

What an ignorant response. If you stumble into someone like a thundering clumsy bovine, you apologise profusely, you don't say "Well, if you had trainers on, you'd have been fine!"

Your response is equally as ignorant. I said the woman should have apologised at the time. The comment I was replying to was a discussion about OP claiming for injury from work for this accident, not about wether or not the woman should have apologised, which I have already said she should have.

Your username is quite fitting for the explanation of your question. I would imagine OP was wearing heels and when this troll came barging through the door and knocked into the OP, she stumbled, twisted her ankle and her shoe came off.

Seen it many times whilst out on a Saturday night when people have had too much to drink. It’s really not difficult to imagine 🙄.

OP was drunk at work ? HR should be involved

BuildbyNumbere · 14/09/2026 20:29

Did you log this in the accident book?

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 15/09/2026 07:28

You're not being unreasonable to be frustrated they are finding it funny. Sounds like a nasty accident, I'd have said "gosh sorry, are you OK, I couldn't see you" at the time. I'm not sure I'd be doing a formal apology weeks later though! It's an accident, they happen, it isn't actually her fault. I'm surprised there's not been more sympathy, but (I'm guessing here) are you potentially a bit of a drama queen? There's a lot of "x rays and appointments" but sounds like actually, a mild sprain is what's going on, and did you genuinely need an x ray to tell you that because ime you really really know if a bone is broken. I'd only take time off work for an x ray if I genuinely thought it was broken. I'd also not go to the hospital or walk in with a sprain, I'd be icing it and elevating it. There's not a lot they can do, so I'm surprised you've needed many appointments. My dd sprained her wrist and the walk in at 5pm the next day x rayed and strapped it up in about 25 mins, no further appointments required and no time off needed.
Either way, try and let it go. She can't fix it now, it's annoying but demanding a formal apology will make you look mad I think.

I can’t see where OP said she was running

It's quite clear, if you look. Here it is
She flung the door open and ran in.

AlwaysExtraHot · 15/09/2026 08:10

I presume it was reported as a H&S incident. All your trips to hospital etc should be logged. Have you had a diagnosis?
I'll be honest, I am finding it hard to imagine someone barging a person out of the way as you describe. Does she often move around like that?

BitOutOfPractice · 15/09/2026 08:13

Lmnop22 · 13/09/2026 17:22

It was obviously an accident and sorry won’t make your ankle hurt less.

Does she even know that you’re actually injured and have taken time off for it etc?

What a ridiculous answer: it wouldn’t make your ankle hurt any less. What’s the point of any apology then? I’m know I wrote your car off and caused whiplash but apologising wont fix your car? I know I hurt your feelings when I called you a twat but it’s too late to apologise now. It was an accident. I mean…

OP if I had hurt you like that, even if by accident, I would be absolutely horrified and apologising A lot!

CliffPsych · 15/09/2026 08:23

For me, it would be instinctive to say sorry. Like if I accidentally stand on somebody’s toe when getting on the tube etc. It’s very weird not to apologise to a colleague in this scenario. A sincere apology costs nothing.

lockinsideout · 15/09/2026 08:24

ColdAsAWitches · 13/09/2026 17:19

I'm not entirely sure it was her fault though. Two people bumped into each other because neither of you can see through doors. I'm sure it's annoying and painful, but nobody is necessarily at fault.

This seems likely to me. But if it was me I'd have apologized.

Exactly. 99% of people would apologise for even the slightest bump into someone else. I don't know why so many people aren't acknowledging this.

But weeks later, a forced apology is of no use whatsoever, and would also be meaningless, sadly.

I get that she ought to apologise but I just don’t think demanding someone who clearly doesn’t want to apologise must apologise actually gets OP any further. She gets the unwillingly given apology of a colleague doing it because she’s told to do it - what’s the point?

It’s a figure of speech, the woman barged in in a rush, presumably she also wasn’t flying as stated in the OP. It doesn’t mean she was running around the building. OP never bothered coming back to reply to anyone anyway so it’s irrelevant now really.

It’s a figure of speech
Oh, is it?
And I never said she was unning around the building. OP just said she ran into the room.

The person I was replying to said she was running in the workplace.

Steel toe capped wouldn’t have made a difference here. Just shoes that fit properly

This is some of the weirdest OP blaming I've seen on here.

Well, she was, assuming the staff room is in their workplace...

OP hurt ankle after falling out of shoe and people suggest better fitting shoes may help…. Yeah absolutely bizarre 🙄 and I didn’t say it was OPs fault, I said I didn’t think she’d be able to sue for it.

I didn’t say she was running ‘around the workplace’, no. She was however (in the OP’s telling) running into the staff room.
Do you see how both of those things can be true?
