AIBU to want an apology after a colleague injured my ankle?

a few weeks ago I was coming out of the staff room at work and a colleague came flying in, crashed into me, knocked me out of my shoe and I stumbled and landed awkwardly on my ankle. It’s been weak and painful ever since. I had to cancel a charity race and Ive had time off work for appointments and X-rays.

Her response was “well I was hungry”. Everyone who saw it happen finds it hilarious. People who didn’t see it finds the description hilarious. I don’t and I’m pissed off. I want her to acknowledge it and acknowledge that it was her fault and apologise rather than it still being treated like a comedy sketch.

Oh dear, hope your ankle heals soon!!

She didn't do it intentionally or maliciously, so I think expecting her to apologise weeks after is a bit much. She should have apologised in the situation, but apart from that I think she doesn't need to keep apologising. Management should address it now by installing glass doors etc, take it seriously and make sure nobody makes light of the situation.

I get a feeling this colleague annoys you in other ways too, and this was just a tip of the Iceberg for you...?

Girlsjustwannahavefunno1 · 17/09/2026 23:23

Ask hr/work if they can put a sign on it saying please be careful opening this door as there maybe someone on the other side . Passive aggressive for thoughtless colleagues who shouldn't have run in like a bull in a China shop in the first place...

They can, however that’s not what was said. Can you understand that? Do you want to pointlessly argue the same point some more? We don’t actually need to agree, is that ok with you?

But it was. Am I missing something crucial? The op said she ran into the room.

strugglinguphill · 15/09/2026 10:51

That’s out of order, I would have been so apologetic and felt absolutely awful for hurting someone!

Deathinvegas · 15/09/2026 10:45

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 13/09/2026 17:31

Exactly. If this lady needs to apologise, surely OP should also apologise for standing directly behind a door?

The OP was probably standing behind the door because she was about to open the door to leave the room. Personally I find it quite hard to use doors without going near them.
You sound like one of the OPs work colleagues?
OP this is shocking behaviour, I’m shocked your colleague didn’t check you were ok, I’m shocked she didn’t apologise and I’m shocked she thinks hurting you is funny.
And I’m also shocked so many people on this forum are defending her.

I can’t see where OP said she was running

She flung the door open and ran in

Neuronimo · 15/09/2026 10:18

YANBU I hope this gets logged as a work based injury.

A sorry at the time would have made sense, but in the Absance of the ability to see through the door, why was this her fault rather than an accident?

I think it's the fact she hasn't apologused!

backformoreofthesame · 15/09/2026 10:14

It also depends on the “charge” and wether she was “charging” which to me would mean running or she just pushed open a door and it felt like a charge which it can easily do if you are on the wrong side

mrsm43s · 15/09/2026 10:13

If the door had opened the other way, OP would have knocked her colleague flying. It was an accident. That said, the colleague should absolutely have checked OP was OK and issued a simple apology in the moment.

Because it’s a bit reckless to charge into a room when you don’t know what’s on the other side of the door? The OP could have been carrying a hot drink or something.

Scarlettpixie · 15/09/2026 10:02

I am surprised she didn't apologise at the time. I would probably apologise if someone ran into me!

Presumably she is unaware how hurt you were. I am not sure what good an apology at this stage would do. It was an accident.

I didn’t say she was running ‘around the workplace’, no. She was however (in the OP’s telling) running into the staff room.
Do you see how both of those things can be true?

You just said you never said she was running in the workplace. This is pointless.

This is some of the weirdest OP blaming I've seen on here.

OP hurt ankle after falling out of shoe and people suggest better fitting shoes may help…. Yeah absolutely bizarre 🙄 and I didn’t say it was OPs fault, I said I didn’t think she’d be able to sue for it.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 15/09/2026 09:49

AlwaysExtraHot · 15/09/2026 09:48

Well, she was, assuming the staff room is in their workplace...

You just said you never said she was running in the workplace. This is pointless.

The person I was replying to said she was running in the workplace.

Steel toe capped wouldn’t have made a difference here. Just shoes that fit properly

It’s a figure of speech
Oh, is it?
And I never said she was unning around the building. OP just said she ran into the room.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 15/09/2026 09:33

It’s a figure of speech, the woman barged in in a rush, presumably she also wasn’t flying as stated in the OP. It doesn’t mean she was running around the building. OP never bothered coming back to reply to anyone anyway so it’s irrelevant now really.

It's quite clear, if you look. Here it is

What a ridiculous answer: it wouldn’t make your ankle hurt any less. What’s the point of any apology then? I’m know I wrote your car off and caused whiplash but apologising wont fix your car? I know I hurt your feelings when I called you a twat but it’s too late to apologise now. It was an accident. I mean…

OP if I had hurt you like that, even if by accident, I would be absolutely horrified and apologising A lot!

I get that she ought to apologise but I just don’t think demanding someone who clearly doesn’t want to apologise must apologise actually gets OP any further. She gets the unwillingly given apology of a colleague doing it because she’s told to do it - what’s the point?

CliffPsych · 15/09/2026 08:23

For me, it would be instinctive to say sorry. Like if I accidentally stand on somebody’s toe when getting on the tube etc. It’s very weird not to apologise to a colleague in this scenario. A sincere apology costs nothing.

Exactly. 99% of people would apologise for even the slightest bump into someone else. I don't know why so many people aren't acknowledging this.

But weeks later, a forced apology is of no use whatsoever, and would also be meaningless, sadly.

lockinsideout · 15/09/2026 08:24

ColdAsAWitches · 13/09/2026 17:19

I'm not entirely sure it was her fault though. Two people bumped into each other because neither of you can see through doors. I'm sure it's annoying and painful, but nobody is necessarily at fault.

This seems likely to me. But if it was me I'd have apologized.
