Aibu feeling uneasy about men taking little girls to the toilet in the womens toilet?

I've seen this a few times and I dont know what is the right thing to do.
So the other week we were at the cinema. I took my daughter to the toilet and as I was waiting for her a man came out of a cubicle with a little girl and went to wash her hands.
It got me thinking.
I feel uncomfortable a man in the womens toilet. I understand how you'd potentially feel uncomfortable taking a daughter into the mens toilets.
And the only other option in this situation was the disabled toilet but morally thats wrong.

I dont know what I feel is right in this situation so wanted to know other people's opinions.
So yabu: its right for a man to take girl into female toilets
Yanbu: he should take her somewhere else...but where?

It's grown women putting their wishes above that of young children.

No young girl should have to go into a adult male toliet if she doesn't want to.

It's a wise mum that doesn't let her young pboy go into a male tolet in his own and brings him to the ladies instead.

Shocked that so many grown put their own needs above that of a child.

But what do you think is going to happen in the men’s toilet, if Dad is in there too? Surely you’d use the cubicle so it’s not like you’re hanging out in the men’s for ages?

Loub1987 · Yesterday 12:29

Wouldnt really bother me to see a man in there but I know it does bother other women so no, he shouldn’t be in there.

My DH takes our daughter into the men’s if I’m not there.

The women in the toilet don’t know who this man is . He is a strange man and that’s that . Adult men should never ever be in female only spaces .

So the little girl should pee within ear shot of half a dozen strange men, after having to walk past them while they are partially undressed with their genitalia outside their clothing?

Make it make sense. How is this nothing, but an adult woman seeing a fully clothed dad helping a little girl some kind of horror show?

So much of this would be solved in about two hours if venues would just design men's bathrooms like a sensible person - either put the cubicles first so you have to walk past them to get to the out-of-sight urinals, or put saloon doors around the urinals. I have never understood this tbh!

The men's loos in our new office have no urinals. The toilets for men and women are segregated but they're identical in layout. Cubicles with floor to ceiling doors and a row of washbasins. No reason why a father couldn't take a young daughter in.

Fupoffyagrasshole · Yesterday 12:30

My husband does tend to take her in men’s if disabled not available but he hates it cus it smells like piss and there’s usually wee on the floor or the seat and there might be men at the urinals it’s not a nice place for a little girl

It doesn't make sense to me and seems to be coming out of an American movement online. You don't want you daughter around men in toilets so you a man go into the women's toilets where other people's daughters are

Edited

Exactly. It is simple. You take your young DC into the toilets that match your sex. I took my young DSs into the women’s loos. I didn’t use the gents!

A dad should take his daughter into the gents, moving her swiftly past the urinals.

So do the men in the men's toilet have the same right over their single sex space, have they the right to bar the young girl to enter the toilet or to demand she leave?

Greyhound98 · Yesterday 12:32

Men should take their daughters in to the men’s loos if their daughter is not old enough to go in the ladies alone. Cover their eyes if they feel they have to, or have a quick look in before going in with the child to make sure no bloke is stood there with his pants round his ankles, which wouldn’t be appropriate for a boy child either 🤷‍♀️

"Parenting in the most appropriate toilet"? Lol.
By that logic, that would be mean a little girl is safest in the women's toilet instead of going into the gents, with multiple men pissing at the urinals for instance.

Ridiculous "lol"

she's with her father. What's the issue

NullaEffugium · Yesterday 12:32

This is short sighted, you get little girls used to using a cubicle in the men’s toilets while surrounded by strange adult men peeing, then when they grow up they won’t care about single sex spaces for women. They will be ok with unisex toilets and hearing men pissing in urinals while they say cor did you see how cute she was? I could eat her up.

I don't believe anything is going to happen but a young girl shouldn't have to go in there if she doesn't want.

She doesn't have to worry about seeing men at urinals or feeling she's in the wrong place.

Surely a child should be prioritised over grown women?

TinyTempest · Yesterday 12:33

Nosy toilet user?

its a women,s space. He doesn't belong there.

He does if his daughter needs to pee.

There is no should about it with safeguarding. Parents should make judgements based on their children and where they are.

Yup. Exactly . I went to the men’s changing rooms every week as a child with my dad. Didn’t knock a fidge out of me. Was completely unfazed and unbothered by it , as was my sister .

Orangebadger · Yesterday 12:33

Young children go into the toilet their parent would use. So my 8 yr old DS comes into the women’s with me, in some places he’ll go into the men’s alone. My DD when young went into the men’s with her father.

MrDobbs · Yesterday 12:34

When my daughter was younger I used to try and take her to the disabled toilets where possible. In many cases, these were just marked as disabled toilets not family/baby change, so it is misuse and I understand the perspective of people who consider this unacceptable.

I have taken her to the men's a couple of times but frankly, most mens toilet cubicles are disgusting and she was also less comfortable in a group of unfamiliar men than women at nursery age, probably because all her nursery practitioners were female.

I have never used the women's. I am just glad that she's now 6 and I can send her in to the women's toilets alone and my younger child is a boy so don't have to deal with this question anymore.

CanterThroughChaos · Yesterday 12:34

Children’s safety comes before adults comfort, doesn’t bother me at all, if it’s an issue for you wait until they are done and then use the toilet, just like we would have to do if I needed to take my child into the accessible toilet and it wasn’t being used as intended.

Dithercats · Yesterday 12:34

Mooselander · Yesterday 11:00

We have two girls. My husband takes them into the disabled toilets.

Why on earth would you think that was “morally wrong”? Confused He certainly wouldn’t take them into the women’s.

Unless one of them is disabled he shouldn't do this.
They are for disabled people....its so frustrating when your colostomy bag is aboit to burst and you cant access the loo for people with kids 💩

You’re still not answering the question.

When I was very little, I am going to guess about five, my dad took my brother and I swimming and used the men's changing rooms, and I saw an adult stranger's penis. It actually did quite disturb and upset me for a while. I am obviously fine now, but it wasn't nice at the time (and we are a family who are fairly comfortable with nudity, so I had glimpsed brother and dad naked before and understood men had different bodies).

Because of the nature of men's toilets, with urinals, I don't think it's OK to take little girls in there and risk them being exposed to full frontal male nudity. It's OK if the gents is cubicle only - that's different.

I also agree that guys shouldn't be in the women's toilets unless there is absolutely no alternative.

Therefore the least worst outcome in this situation is to use the disabled loo (I understand the objections to this, but there is no ideal solution sometimes) . Obviously in many cases this doubles as a family room so that's it's exact purpose! Even when it doesn't, I think using it is the least worst option.

And demand more safe, gender neutral toilets and changing spaces, to acknowledge the fact that dads have daughters, women have sons, people have opposite sex partners who require assistance with toileting, etc etc.

I’m sorry for your experience.

Admittedly I have not spent much time in men’s toilets but I don’t think there is any full frontal nudity though, is there? If there are urinals I don’t really see how full front nudity would happen?!

I think changing rooms are different, but more likely to be family facilities available, or individual cubicles.

Jimsaidpeoplearestrange · Yesterday 12:35

Sirzy · Yesterday 11:07

Children up to about 8 go into the toilet their parent would normally use with them. Or a family room if one is available.

Disabled toilet should only be used if one of the people using the toilet has a disability.

this
they are not for people who can't be bothered to use the correct ones.

And what if the female child isn't comfortable with that? Why do adult female's comfort and preferences trump those of a child's ? I'm really astounding by the double standards on this thread.
