Aibu feeling uneasy about men taking little girls to the toilet in the womens toilet?

I've seen this a few times and I dont know what is the right thing to do.
So the other week we were at the cinema. I took my daughter to the toilet and as I was waiting for her a man came out of a cubicle with a little girl and went to wash her hands.
It got me thinking.
I feel uncomfortable a man in the womens toilet. I understand how you'd potentially feel uncomfortable taking a daughter into the mens toilets.
And the only other option in this situation was the disabled toilet but morally thats wrong.

I dont know what I feel is right in this situation so wanted to know other people's opinions.
So yabu: its right for a man to take girl into female toilets
Yanbu: he should take her somewhere else...but where?

Urinals are useful as they are space efficient and quick. It allows more sanitary space to be women. Women should have twice as many units as men for equality. The reason the ‘ladies’ has queues is men still have more than women. This is partly historical as toilets weren’t built for women. Then designers were men and didn’t realise the biological needs of women.

If a man shouts ahead that he is entering the toilet washroom with his daughter, I very much doubt men would want to expose himself to the dad.

‘Spending a penny’ is from when you had to put a penny in the lock for the toilet cubicle. Urinals were free to really try and encourage men not to urinate in the street. It was even corroding buildings it was such a problem.

See that's where we differ in our outlook. I think a decent father would want to take his daughter to the toilet that best suits her needs and preferences. If that's a women's toilet then I take my proverbial hat off to him.

Yet it then becomes a mixed sex use toilet. It is not a women’s toilet. And the result is the design has to change.

Do you take your proverbial hat off to all toilets becoming a mixed sex design?

Why are some women so keen to give away women's rights? So many "pick mes" here. Women who think it's okay to let "some" men in to our single sex spaces - or do you just say that you really don't care?

Vile.

I haven't a problem with all toilets being mixed sex toilets if they were individually contained with a basin and opened into a public space. Which is what I understand family toilets to be. So I still don't understand the increased risk of family toilets?

YourRedLurker · Yesterday 16:52

I'm a bloke with 3 daughters, never did I need to go into ladies loo. When they were young enough to need somone with them they were young enough they didn't care about using the mens, all they wanted was a parent with them. They're not going to be traumatised seeing the back of a man stood at a urinal.

I think this whole movement is just coming across from America where it seems white men have no tolerance from being restricted from any space.

Eww no a man has no place in the womens toilets

I'm no terf, but they should be all over this!

Is it really vile to consider that there might be some exceptions to the rule, as there are to most rules?

E.g.

No males in women's toilets - unless it's a male cleaner.
No males in women's toilets - unless it's a boy under 8.

Etc.

(Not coming for you btw, just trying to explore my own thoughts on this!)

It doesn't make sense to me and seems to be coming out of an American movement online. You don't want you daughter around men in toilets so you a man go into the women's toilets where other people's daughters are

Edited

Well, presumably this man doesn’t let his pants down and pees in front of the eyes of the girls, so I would argue that a man accompanying his daughter to the women’s toilet is better than a man taking his daughter to the men’s toilet, if we discuss which option impacts young girls more.

Why are you so vehemently defending women's rights but have no appreciation of girl's rights? My stance doesn't come from a "pick me" mentality, it's that I don't see in this scenario that an adult women's comfort takes precedence over that of a female child's. Women's rights don't start at adulthood, therefore if a young girl doesn't wish to use a mens toilet then she has every right to use a woman's, even if that requires her father to accompany her. What I would consider as vile is a young girl being made to use a mens toilet against her wishes as her father has been made to feel like he's some sort of deviant just for wanting to attend to his daughter in the toilet of her choice.

Why does this one child's preferences trump other women and children's?

men have no right to be in a woman's space.

If you care to look at the vote, it's currently 50/50 so it really isn't one child's preference trumping everyone else's.

I still wonder why this one child's discomfort trumps the women - and other children -

There’s always a conflict in these situations. Does a small child really decide they prefer to go in the ladies’ toilets? And if they do, then there are likely to be girls as well as women who don’t deserve to have some random man coming in - victims of abuse, religious reasons etc.

Its pretty sick that people are having to defend the rights of women and girls to not have the indignity of a random man being in their space.

Anarchy99 · Yesterday 17:26

If you want your husband to take your daughter into the toilets without disregarding the rights and dignity of women, campaign for family toilets or whatever. Disabled people had to do it, women had to do it, but of course men have decided that their wants trump the rights of women and girls.

So, what you think the poll is skewed by the the fact that the people that were able to vote are disproportionately of the opinion that men can take their daughter's into the women's toilet?

That makes absolutely no sense at all.

The poll supports the fact that people are equally divided as to whether a man can or can not take his daughter into a woman's toilet. Therefore no one child's needs is taking precedence over any woman's wishes.

I totally agree that random solitary men don't / shouldn't go into women's toilets. Men accompanying a female minor is in my view an entirely different matter.

Disabled toilets are often locked. I can't say i love this but im.not sure theres an alternative.

Does a young girl really get no say as to what their preference is? As I've previously said the poll is 50/50 so it really isn't a case of the rights of the majority of girls/women are being overlooked. 50% of voters feel a girl has the right to be accompanied to a womens toilet by a male that is assisting her.

CheeseWisely · Yesterday 18:04

This comes up often. For me, and I appreciate it’s not for everyone, I have no issue with a Man providing care for a young girl or indeed a Woman who requires toileting care. Men on their own (no matter what they’re wearing) absolutely not.

Bobbybobbins · Yesterday 18:09

It’s very entitled for people to use the (usually one) disabled toilet without a disability. What if someone has to wait behind all the people who think it’s ok, with a physical or invisible disability?
I have two pre teen disabled DS who I wouldn’t dream of taking in the women’s toilets they are too old. I can’t go in the men’s. Loads of people seem to think it’s ok to use the one toilet avaible to us. My 10 year old is still in nappies.

The person who needs to use the toilet is the girl, not the man. So primarily it's her right we're talking about. She has just as much right to use the women's toilet as any other female. She just happens to need assistance from an adult who happens to be a male. The male is perfectly within his legal right to assist the girl in a woman's toilet. If anyone needs to campaign it's the people that feel comfortable with this.

No, I don't think the poll is "skewed ". How weird. i just think it's not that important.

if 5 women and girls are in the toilets, then a man comes in with his daughter, then it's fairly obvious that her comfort is taking precedence over the 5 already there. I don't care what a poll says

men should not be in women's spaces. There is no need for the man to be in there. If the child is old enough to object to going with her dad, then she's old
enoubh to
go to the women's on her own

I despair at how easily some
women give away our rights.

Sometimes you just don’t have a choice that’s just life and I’ve yet to meet a small child who actually gives a shit about this sort of thing until they are able to use the toilet on their own
