Is the trans kids trend over? Aibu to wonder what happened to the kids caught up in it in the 2010s?

As we know the period from the mid 10s to early 20s has been described as “woke 1” and is apparently “over”.
When I was at secondary school in the 2010s, there were four trans kids in my year group (3 FTMs and one mtf) the one mtf was autistic and in foster care. I was always nice to them and kept my views to myself but I’m wondering what’s going on with them now, they’ve completely dropped off the radar. None of them have social media accounts and no one else I went to school with had heard from them.

My daughter has just entered year 5 and doesn’t know any trans kids or even what one is, my neighbours teenage children don’t know any either and they’re the age I was when four classmates transitioned.

I know there’s a lot of teachers on mumsnet would this be your experience too?

Ive tried googling this but everyone seems to have moved on from it I think there may be a forgotten generation who’s lives have been ruined

Unfortunately this is the sad reality - I was reading anonymous accounts of detransitioners and the very community that indoctrinated them with harmfulness, turned their back on them, stalked, harassed and threatened them.

Such delightful people

I did a bit of supply in a certain school a couple of years ago. One of the teachers I was covering was - judging by the cartoon nameplate on the door - a man with a beard who claimed to be non-binary.

The kids dutifully referred to him as "Mx," but kept calling him "he". I gather that he was off with stress, given a comment made by a pupil. (I admit to pretending that I hadn't heard them.)

Yesterday, I saw a social media post where a parent complained about another member of staff at the same school, but a different department. The complaint was about a demand that the pupils acknowledge the teacher's non-binary status. There were umpteen comments from parents expressing concern over the teacher's presence in the school.

When I did supply at the school, I had one pupil lecturing me because I'd said "Ladies and gentlemen, you may go."

I pointed out that I'd checked the register beforehand and everyone in the class was listed as male or female - no one was listed as being non-binary or any other gender.

An argument between the boy and one of the girls ensued. He claimed that there were 64 genders. She told him he was being stupid.

I'm a primary school teacher, entering my 20th year, and I can only bring one child to mind...
It was a funny case though, this child started reception, recorded as male, but dressed in the girls uniform, the shoes, the dresses, beautiful long hair, the works. Self-identified as a boy when asked (not unreasonably) by the other children, but visually appeared as a girl. Had a name that could have gone either way, boy or girl. Think along the lines of Harley. Could get away with either.
He continued with the girls uniform all the way through primary school. The children just seemed to accept it.
Lost track of him when he went into Year 7, but I'd be interested to know how he's getting on.

I really hope you're right and it's over. Where I'm from in rural Ireland, we always tend to lag behind quite badly on the trend front so for me, we're not much past the peak but I can definitely see glimmers of sanity appearing amongst the young people I know. Sadly though, there are still far too many of them entrenched in this absolute nonsense.

This is where we are in Canada I think.

It was massive in my oldest kid's classes, slightly less in the next, and much less in the 16s year.

Even my older kids, though supposedly supportive of gender ideology, have both noticed that the kids their age who were trans identified were kind of messed up, and the ones who have continued are quite messed up and seem not to improve.

The people I see still super into are in their 20s and strongly wrapped up in appearing progressive, anime, and collecting other diagnoses.

It's all walking sticks and ADHD now.

Yup. The " queer disabled neurodivergent special-ethnicity at my work has just started using a cane.

Interesting discussion.

No idea really and I'm not in contact with enough teens/young adults in this demographic but as a butch lesbian it seems to be less a problem being a butch lesbian, for young women that way inclined. There's (slightly) less of an assumption that you must transition just because you are gender non-conforming / masculine presenting. Though there's a lot more chat about "masc" rather than butch, but broadly butch is seen as less of a dirty word than it was a decade ago. Likewise "lesbian".

Not over with my DD's friends. 3 girls, now boys with definitely 2 on testosterone. 1 boy now a girl, sibling of of one of girls now a boy! Quite a few other non binary.

DS is 2 years below and I haven't yet heard of any gender changes in his group, although 1 of his friend's younger sister says she is a boy.

BadSkiingMum · Yesterday 13:55

What happened to being a ‘dandy’? That was quite big in the early 20th century. Some of the style symbolism was echoed in 1950s menswear.

I guess WWI forced a changing of priorities. Or did they all just run out of money, as per Beau Brummel?

When I was at school in the 80s there was a subset of “different” girls who all hung together. They found God - but in an extremely performative way, not just being quiet churchgoers. Maybe today they are those weird Green Christian women you see with “Refugees Welcome” signs (whilst having no intention of receiving any themselves).

I expect if they had been at school now they would all have been enticed by the non-binary stuff.

AFAIK, women who take cross sex hormones go through early menopause which can include loss of bone density and mobility issues so they use walking sticks.

I think using one is the new version of blue hair to show you are a trans/ pronouns/queer ally type person.

i have a 22 year old DD with arthritis in her knees - she uses a stick sometimes but not always.

She gets much more offers of help when she isn't using the stick than when she does - maybe people are beginning to think it's a fashion choice? Whereas when she's just limping they don't assume she's faking that.

FedUpCelery · Yesterday 14:06

I hope it is waning. I think the COVID kids were hardest hit. My youngest was too young to be online much and I assume her peers were too and it does seem there are fewer trans identified kids in her year.
She is the one child out of the three who I have been able to be completely open with about my feelings on the matter and in general she is the one most likely to have opinions slightly outside the 'norm' for their generation on other topics" "Don't tell my brothers but I think".....

MaturingCheeseball · Yesterday 14:07

Yes, dh said to me viewing some of the Pride, “Why are they all disabled?” What I don’t know is do they throw the stick in the cupboard when they get home, or do they genuinely believe there is something wrong with them?

The pots thing is a bit of a racket. If anyone has seen the documentary “Crash”, the accused (or her lawyers) settled on (handily diagnosed) pots as being the reason for the fatal car crash. It’s one of those conditions that you can’t test for.

Wilnis7 · Yesterday 14:26

i think the trans kid "trend" as you call it is very understandable when young people are fed very narrow views of what a woman or man should be and they think, well maybe i'm not like that, and then somebody is offering another view of what might be real then maybe they'll explore that.

all pretty simple really, but I'm sure jeremy clarkson thinks otherwise

notyetbranded · Yesterday 14:28

There are still a lot of transgender people around, I work at a uni and we have quite a lot (maybe around 100) on campus. I have no issue aside from the very aggressive extreme ones (usually male who have transitioned to female) who insist they are biologically a woman now while trampling all over women’s rights and spaces at the same time.

All the ones I knew were on puberty blockers at 13 and 14. Even if it’s only a small percentage of people it still seems sad they’ve been completely abandoned when in 2016 they had trans kids on the front of a famous magazine and everyone was cheering it on. Most of them had childhood trauma or special needs and should have had better guidance. Now they’ve done irreversible damage to their bodies and society has just moved on from them

I wonder what percentage it was?? There was a lot of really worrying stuff, and still is, but I think overall the numbers probably were tiny in proportion to the number of children in the UK.

Young women and teenagers are using walking sticks. It’s a bit of a thing.

Why?! 😬

Did you read my follow up comment? Puberty blockers at 13, cross sex hormones at 16 and one ftm had a receding hairline at 20. There’s no going back from that. Do you know about dilation? How skin grafts are taken from the arm to make a phallus?
I think they’ve changed the law in the uk so only adults can medically transition now but the damage has been done to those born in the early 2000s who transitioned as kids.
The fact kids medically transitioning has been banned means we now alll know it’s wrong but no one seems to wonder about those who went through it.

Under 18s have never been allowed to medically transition. Please don’t opine on something you know nothing about.

Amazing thank you - in my area it’s all the middle class children overwhelmingly female that are trans.

I am glad to be informed about how widespread and nefarious the agenda is that’s affecting far more children.

funnily enough, in adulthood it seems to be perverts all using this agenda to gain access to women and children.

Funny how the left are so pro trans but say nothing on the Epstein files which repeatedly highlighted how much they wanted to push this agenda, things that make you go hmm.

A lot of left wing papers have written on the Epstein files, though I agree they were awful on the trans issue (Observer and Morning Star better).
Do the Epstein files mention trans?? Didn't know that- do you have a link?

Woah. Same shit, different decade. That reminded me of Meryn Cadell's I Been Redeemed --

Let it be known that I was fairly young and the indoctrination was very strong. It was in my homeroom class every day where I heard about livin' in torment if I didn't walk with Jesus.

Old Satan's mad, but I'm so glad

It was a public school, with the science teacher hardly the right place, but who was to tell? Would you go home and tell your atheist parents, and risk the wrath of God?

Merkins · Yesterday 14:40

Why?! 😬

Because they have disabilities. Of course, queen misogynist Kathleen Stock has declared it a social contagion because she really, really hates young women and cannot possibly conceive that they can think for themselves.

@DestituteDesperate not just middle class kids, if you look at the characteristics of children referred to the Tavistock gender clinic there were many with social factors including those in care

Yes, Julie Bindel had a really sad article on Blackpool.

You absolutely can test for POTS. Proper diagnosis of POTS requires a tilt table test where the patient lies on a flat bed that's tilted upwards so their heart rate can be monitored.

I don’t think AJ’s child transitioned. Indeed I think she handled it in a very light-touch, let them just be an individual without labelling them type way.

Yes, I have my issues with Jolie but she handled that well. As did Pitt, apparently.

Back in the 90s, I know she had a relationship with Jenny Shizimu (masculine model who has never transitioned) so I wonder if that might be part of the reason she was able (unlike so many Hollywood stars) to compute that tomboy doesn't equal boy. At the same time, Shiloh seemed most tomboyish before the peak, so maybe that's also why.
