Is the trans kids trend over? Aibu to wonder what happened to the kids caught up in it in the 2010s?

As we know the period from the mid 10s to early 20s has been described as “woke 1” and is apparently “over”.
When I was at secondary school in the 2010s, there were four trans kids in my year group (3 FTMs and one mtf) the one mtf was autistic and in foster care. I was always nice to them and kept my views to myself but I’m wondering what’s going on with them now, they’ve completely dropped off the radar. None of them have social media accounts and no one else I went to school with had heard from them.

My daughter has just entered year 5 and doesn’t know any trans kids or even what one is, my neighbours teenage children don’t know any either and they’re the age I was when four classmates transitioned.

I know there’s a lot of teachers on mumsnet would this be your experience too?

Ive tried googling this but everyone seems to have moved on from it I think there may be a forgotten generation who’s lives have been ruined

I'm Spanish. The NB movement has fortunately made very little progress there, despite repeated attempts from the left, because Spanish has grammatical gender – pronouns, nouns but also adjectives all are masculine or feminine. So you have to use made-up forms for all that.

E.g. "los niños" means "the boys". "Las niñas" means "the girls". A former Minister gave a speech talking about "les niñes" (a made-up form in Spanish) to refer to so-called trans and non-gender-conforming children, and we're still laughing about it. It makes the ridiculousness of it self-evident.

But it was always a dress, and he did not pretend he was a princess! He just wore dresses.

You've seen the boys section of clothes shops. Wall to wall Boring Beige. Dresses in school dressing up boxes tend not to be ordinary dresses- they're extra-colourful and extra-sparkly dresses. It's no surprise that small children are drawn to them, especially if their normal clothes are all shades of sludge. Perhaps he'll grow up to be a fashion designer, or like that tailor who makes all his own clothes and dresses entirely in 18th century fashions. Or an artist. Or perhaps he's just a child who likes sparkly things and will grow out of it.

Non binary is more of a trend where I live. The key look is short hair but after that, any colour is acceptable, and any style. Pronouns are they/ them. If teaching, the kids are to call them Teacher instead of Miss/ Mrs/ Ms. Most of the non binary individuals I've come across are in their early to mid 20s.

There was a mtf trans kid in the same year as one of my DDs (now 30). I saw this person (definitely dressed in masculine clothes) very much the worse for wear/ drugs begging on a train a few months ago. This was a kid who had mh issues even as a 10 year old. Very sad.

I know so many trans people, which considering the apparently tiny percentage of trans people, and my not very wide social circle, is quite amazing. My family member - autistic. My child's partner - autistic. A friends 3 (yes, 3!) children - autistic. Another friends 2 children- autistic. Another friends child - autistic. Plus many teens that are friends with children of my friends. Autistic.

I see a theme here. How better to get a a group you finally fit into than declaring yourself autistic and spouting the script to everyone. All these parents say the same thing, repeated from what their children have told them, repeated from what I've read over and over online.

I'm autistic myself, never been gender conforming, alway struggled to find a group to fit into. My God, would I have done the same thing as a teen? Quite probably.

I just can't imagine agreeing with my child (or multiple children) that their body isn't perfect, and is wrong, and must be damaged with drugs and surgery. My children are perfect as they are in my eyes, that is their authentic self. Anything that make your remove or add body parts is not authentic.

I really hope this phase is over. And it is a phase. Because I only know teenagers and old men that are trans. Despite the claim that just as many middle aged women are suddenly declaring themselves trans I have seen no evidence for this. You'd think I'd know loads, having been to a girls school, but we're all still boring actual women.

But, could it be that children who are from non middle class or non white backgrounds find it harder to open up to family?

I imagine saying “I’m the opposite sex” to religious Muslim parents from Bangladesh would be difficult.

Can’t speak for middle class per se. As I said my experience is (other than the kids in foster care) the ones I knew spent the first half of their childhood relatively well off before parents divorce led to them becoming a lot less well off for the rest of their childhood. Moving house and sometimes school. One kid was terrified to move to a new cheaper neighbourhood (where I lived so can vouch it really wasn’t that bad) because he’d spent years hearing his parents say how terrible it was. Amongst all that upheaval maybe they took comfort and distraction in a new gender identity.

Didn’t know any middle class trans kids who’d been middle class for their entire childhood.

I said it was my experience among the ones I knew. Apart from the one who was in foster care (my sister who is two years younger than me also knew another mtf kid who was in foster care).

Couple people said in there experience it’s only rich white kids and I’m just saying the ones I knew spent the first half of their childhood well off and then parental divorce led to them no longer being well off and usually having to move to a cheaper neighbourhood. (In one case this kid was TERRIFIED of moving because pre divorce his parents had spoken about what a dump the place was) I actually lived there and it really wasn’t that bad lol but it’s the big adjustment right when you’re about to start high school. These kids must of all been in a very vulnerable state of mind.

I do agree with you that neurodivergence seems to be a theme too

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · Yesterday 21:50

It would be amusing if all the few hundred individuals with this condition got together and signed an open letter asking not to be lumped in under the trans umbrella please, wouldn't it.

After all, how do you change from one sex to the other if you are already both? (Which, I know, they are not, but it seems the quickest way to put it.)

TheKeatingFive · Yesterday 21:47

Kalanthe · Yesterday 11:55

I worded it wrong, I meant both types of genitals, not full sets of both. There is a disorder where a person has both ovaries and testicles called ovotesticular DSD. A person suffering from it can have both ovaries and testicles (or just tissue but functioning) which produces eggs and forms sperm in the same body, sometimes with a uterus and fallopian tubes on one side and male internal ducts on the other. This isn’t just “ambiguous genitalia” but both types of gonadal tissue which are in the same body. Not to mention that sex classification isn't based on chromosomes alone and there are various ways to determine gender - chromosomes, hormones, gonads, internal and external organs/genitalia. You can't pick one of them (eg chromosomes) and say this is what determines gender. People can be born with a mix of traits and sometimes genuinely are difficult to classify as one gender

This disorder is a) staggeringly rare and b) not about having both types of genitals, but genital tissue from the opposite reproductive pathway.

None of these individuals have anything close to two sets of functioning genitalia and the dominant reproductive pathway is still discernible - that is to say they are all either male or female.

Quite what that has to do with identifying as trans is anyone’s guess as there seems to be no over represention in trans identifying individuals.

Yes, dh said to me viewing some of the Pride, “Why are they all disabled?” What I don’t know is do they throw the stick in the cupboard when they get home, or do they genuinely believe there is something wrong with them?

The pots thing is a bit of a racket. If anyone has seen the documentary “Crash”, the accused (or her lawyers) settled on (handily diagnosed) pots as being the reason for the fatal car crash. It’s one of those conditions that you can’t test for.

This video was really interesting viewing

It's a total eye opener.

Just WHY are the number of disabled people in trans population over represented here?

Reception kids are tiny. One of my sons loved dress up at that age - Bob the builder, buzz lightyear, captain America, tutus, witches, princesses. All out meant was a was a small child who enjoyed imaginative play.
It was when let toys be toys and let clothes be clothes were both a thing.

But it was always a dress, and he did not pretend he was a princess! He just wore dresses.

Yes, they were funding the white supremacists with money they had been given to fight racism. They also persuaded white supremacists who wanted to leave, to stay.

What???

Ive been saying all along 9/10 its an autism/neurodiverse thing. Take Carrie and David Grants kids, three of their children are 'trans' and you guessed it all three have autism.

I always wonders if (in addition to autism) some of the FtM was driven by the very girly/non natural aesthetic. The big lashes, fake tan etc.

I see far more girls embracing more of a 90s look at the moment and it's much less full on. Perhaps easier to fit with if you are not a girly girl without thinking you have to be something else.

Definitely think this is part of it.

Even if numbers are declining, that's not necessarily evidence that it was a fad. Trans activists would see it as evidence of young people choosing to stay closeted in an increasingly hostile environment.

I get your point but the huge and rapid rise was in young girls identifying as boys - seeing as there is no evidence of any (?) mature women in their 50’s and 60’s deciding to identify as men ( as compared to the numbers of mature men, who have often been married with children , deciding they are women) , I think we can draw our conclusions about social contagion as opposed to re- closeting!

sunshine244 · Yesterday 20:24

I’m guessing you have no direct experience of parenting a young person with AuDHD and severe mental health issues and “trying to balance these views”?

Haha... I have two of them! They are not allowed social media nor do they have constant interactions with total strangers online trying to push agendas on them.

Autistic children are far more likely to be dragged into extremist views of various types so need far more monitoring and support.

HereComesTheNight · Yesterday 20:21

Within that article was a link to another on the subject of de-diagnosing ADHD.
https://archive.ph/By6fu

People who were diagnosed as children and found it closed doors, limited careers. I've often thought it must put employers off but here it's clear that certain careers wouldn't accept anyone with such a "diagnosis". Perfectly normal as adults having a revision of the original diagnosis and it removed from their medical records. Seems similar to de-trans.

A cautionary read for those who are pursuing a label as adults.

SylvanMoon · Yesterday 20:19

I would hope that the fad is indeed over, but I worry because the puberty blocker trial is still going ahead. I would also hope that as a society we ensure that those young people get the medical and psychological help that they need once they've decided to detransition. We can't just pretend nothing happened or no one was harmed.

That's an extraordinary generalisation!!

All the trans kids I know have their two parents at home, normal families, brothers, sisters, grandparents etc. There is however a high incidence of neurodiversity in this cohort.

Children in care of the state were amongst the first cohort of children to be cynically targeted by transactivists back in the day, along with social care staff, in children's homes and foster carers.

Children alienated from their families for all sorts of reasons were of course hugely vulnerable to notion that they could reinvent themselves as the opposite sex with social workers & others who work with them unthinkingly supporting the idea.
Julie Bindel wrote about how this played out in Blackpool which has a significant population of children in care

https://juliebindel.substack.com/p/why-do-so-many-girls-in-blackpool

Why do so many girls in Blackpool want to become boys?

In this run-down, working class seaside resort, rife with child abuse and poverty, referrals to gender clinics are almost four times higher than the national average. Why?

I have no issue with genuine trans people- the two older adults i have met were just normal everyday people. No unusual clothes, it wasn't a big deal, they seemed pretty content and just wanted to be included without a fuss.

Whereas the trans young people I know are all AuDHD, all have severe mental health issues, all wear really way out clothes that draw as much attention as possible and all have a range of non specific medical concerns/disabilities. They are also all high social media users and seem to have identities formed only about their trans and disability needs, getting a huge amount of positive feedback from total strangers online. Sharing how unwell they are. How the world is against them etc. It is really sad as there doesn't seem to be any parenting attempt to balance these views.

Aside from the mtf I knew in foster care all of the FTMs I knew came from families that were originally well off before their parents divorced halfway through their childhood causing their parents financial situation to crash and burn.

In my experience people who spent the first half of their childhood well off before divorce or job loss led to the second half not being well off at all seem to have more issues than someone who was just not well off their whole childhood.

Moving to a new neighbourhood and a new school (places that may have been spoken about disparagingly by your parents in the past that you’d overheard) and then struggling to fit in maybe they had to latch onto another identity.

That's an extraordinary generalisation!!
