Would you be annoyed by this or am I being unreasonable?

DH has bought something for the house without mentioning it to me and I am honestly a bit annoyed.

It was about £40 so its not like he's gone mad or anything but its something we absolutely did not need and I would have rather the money went towards other things tbh.

I only found out because the parcel turned up and when I asked what it was he said he'd ordered it a couple of days ago. I said I wish he'd mentioned it first and he said why, its hardly a big purchase and he doesn't ask me before buying things for himself.

I do see that point but I don't really think its the same when its something for the house? Especially when we've got other things coming up that we need to pay for.

I am not saying he needs to ask permission every time he spends money btw. If he wants to buy himself something with his own money then obviously thats different. But if its coming out of our joint account for something that is basically unnecessary then surely its reasonable to discuss it first?

He thinks I'm being controlling and making an issue out of nothing.

I’m surprised how many posters have said the heated airers are good. I do have an ordinary one, and if I need things to dry a bit quicker, I switch on a little fan heater, aimed at the laundry. Even on the cold setting, it works brilliantly, and no need for an extra airer to store.

Off the main topic but they are really good. Of course you can just use it without switching it on, so you don’t need a normal one as well if you see what I mean.

The heater dryers are silent and very cheap to run. Much cheaper than a fan heater (though obviously won’t also heat up the whole room, which might be a nice side effect of the fan heater if you’re drying clothes in a room where you’re working or watching tv orc whatever!)

AIBUfamilydrama · 29/08/2026 22:32

YANBU on the basis of those heated airers are absolute rubbish.

Autumngirl5 · 29/08/2026 22:33

He is an adult and it was only £40. You sound very controlling.

My partner and I would both be annoyed if either of us spent ~£30+ on something for the house or if it was bigger than a shoe box without talking it through. It's not the cost or a control thing it's a courtesy thing. It is our house, it's our money, I don't want it clutter with things we won't use and don't need. On the flip side we are both prone to over researching and would look into the right heater for our needs or what is the right thing for drying our washing. We both also are passionate about reduce, reuse, recycle and we do our best to find solutions that doesn't result in an impulse purchase.
We have a joint Amazon account and there are very few things that get ordered that the other doesn't know about and agree to get

Interesting, I would MUCH rather not have to be involved in researching the best clothes dryer (or wherever), and I’m happy when my husband takes initiative to get stuff done without involving me in the detail. If we both have a bit of autonomy it saves time on boring tasks.

OP hasn’t told us how her DH and she usually approach purchases, which is relevant in case their usual practice is more like yours (ie carefully discuss all purchases).

I’m still inclined to side with OP’s DH on this one: I think I’d feel stifled if I had to run getting a new ironing board, shoe rack (or whatever) past him.

MinnieM101 · 29/08/2026 22:46

It’s his home as well , why not . ? Unless it’s a hideous piece of furniture

HB8 · 29/08/2026 23:01

Tbh I would’ve been more than happy to know he had thought about buying a heated airer! Shows initiative and it was a good price

Chickadee26 · 29/08/2026 23:05

You are very unreasonable.

SL2924 · 29/08/2026 23:13

if my DH wanted a discussion before such a small purchase I would think he was being extremely controlling.

It was one of those big heated clothes airers 😅

We already have a normal airer and a tumble dryer so I just don't see why we needed another one tbh. He said it'll save on drying costs and that we'll use it loads over winter but I think he just saw it online and fancied it.

Its not even the thing itself really, its more that he just ordered it without mentioning it.

He's bought something that'll save money in the long run! I woke up one morning to find a parcel on the doormat marked 'livestock' OP- it was Yorkshire worms (yes, actual worms from Yorkshire) where my DH is originally from....that he insisted were the only ones that would do for the compost bin. Imagine.......

XMissPlacedX · 29/08/2026 23:29

I think you are being ridiculous tbh, and really controlling.

I’d be annoyed but only because they are rubbish, I had one but got rid.

BrokenWingsCantFly · 29/08/2026 23:32

As a single person there are often threads on here that makes me feel somewhat better about that. Most the time these are posts about affairs, nightmare blended family situations, financial control.
This is the 1st time something so minor made me feel glad to be single. The bloke has ordered something he saw to reduce the domestic load, something low cost you say you can afford to make life a little bit smoother. Imagine you saw something you liked that costed £40, how would you feel if he told you no it is a waste of money

Notrainingbutpouring · 29/08/2026 23:42

Nmiddleofnowhere · 28/08/2026 19:59

Its basically a different style, the heated one is more like a tower thing rather than the normal fold out airer.

Tbf I can see why he'd want it because apparently they dry things quicker and use less than the tumble dryer, but I still think we could have discussed it first 😂

I suppose the normal airer could go if we actually use the heated one all the time, which he says we will. I just don't like buying something before deciding what we're doing with the old one.

You sound quite overbearing unless you’re struggling financially. I’d be delighted that he was being proactive and if I bought something useful for the house and it was this much angst over 40 quid, I’d feel you were financially controlling.

mumsntt · 30/08/2026 00:00

ffs its his house too

i feel sorry for him having to put up with you

arethereanyleftatall · 30/08/2026 06:52

I’m afraid op, I would not like to live in a situation where such a purchase is even questioned, let alone get you annoyed. It would be like treading on egg shells all the time wondering what you’re going to get annoyed at next. It isn’t fair to treat adults like this. Heck, I wouldn’t even question what my kids of any age buy with their own money. It’s up to them. But the egg shells aside, it’s a thoroughly boring conversation to discuss. Like a previous poster said, I would rather be single than have to discuss/ask for permission for boring household purchases.

I think you get what you pay for tbh. I have a Lakeland one and it is absolutely fantastic. Very effective and efficient.

They’re not rubbish if you get a proper one with a cover that basically blasts heat around.

Ours was £40 off Amazon and can dry a load of laundry in two hours.

TheoriginalMrsDarcy · 30/08/2026 07:11

This is not the hill you want to die on. This is not even worth the energy to argue over. Its £40, not £40,000.

TenThousandSpoons · 30/08/2026 07:13

Come back in a month. You will be in love with the heated airer and so pleased DH did this.

Luckyforsome23 · 30/08/2026 07:39

Heated airers are great. We only have space for one airer and it is a heated one and can dry a load a day easily in winter. Never use the tumble drier.

Pssedoffathis · 30/08/2026 07:57

So it’s a heated clothes aired. I actually purchased one for the house and didn’t consult anyone as I didn’t feel it was a necessary consult. I have also purchased an excercise bike, flights, saucepan sets and cushions without consult. DH has recently purchased a burger press, bedding set, coffee table all without discussion. We also don’t ave joint accounts, so if one of us wants to purchase something out of our left over money then that’s up to the purchase and no consult needed. I do think some of his spending is unecessary and I am sure he thinks the same about mine. When I was on mat leave I purchased paint and paintbrushes and painted the whole living room a completely different colour without asking him. I am not sure if our methods are usual but we are 20 years into the relationship and just kind of let each other be and do things as we please as long as it’s not harmful or actually out of order. If he wants to buy a burger press then really what’s the issue, if I buy a heated airer then that also isn’t any sort of issue.

RaginaPhalange · 30/08/2026 08:08

YABU it's £40.....

Mummamap · 30/08/2026 08:20

I’d be thrilled if my husband purchased something this useful to be honest.

JEM61 · 30/08/2026 08:23

Bloody hell. I would be over the moon if my husband took this kind of initiative!! Especially if he does his fair share of the washing, prices of heating and tumble drying going up etc. And if you have a utility room, pop it in there (we don’t, small house and would still buy one!)
